These are the Spider-Man Unified Reading Flow codes for the SMURF era beginning with 394.400.
This era begins with the second Clone Saga, an event which causes Peter Parker to believe that he is actually the clone (and Ben Reilly the true Spider-Man). That turns out not to be the case, as Reilly is eventually revealed to be a clone. The era ends with the "Gathering of Five/Final Chapter" story arcs which conclude the first volume of Amazing Spider-Man.

"Tie is on my Side!" Time passes between SSM 215 and SSM 216 (although it is not clear how much). However, SSM 216 is further down this list because at the conclusion of that story, Ben Reilly confronts Peter Parker for the first time, officially kicking off Clone Saga II.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance fighting alongside Nova, Speedball, Savage Steel and Damek the Earth-Shaker against an alien race known as the Mahari. The Mahari's had pirated a Darkhawk (not Powell but the group of people known as the 'Darkhawks') ship converted it to a killing machine and attacked Earth. Spider-Man and the other are not much for the Mahari and are quickly defeated. Spider-Man is seen once again at the conclusion of the story, gathered with the other heroes, after the Mahari are defeated. *Note this story takes place soon after Spider-Man: Friends and Enemies as Spider-Man's alliance with Nova and Speedball had just occurred. Spider-Man: Friends and Enemies is also mentioned in an editorial note.

Spider-Man makes an appearance in this one page story where, on Christmas Eve, he's fixes the light atop the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree (which was out). He gives it the old 'tap-tap' and the light flicks back on. Spider-Man then heads back out on his way as Santa flies through the night sky in his sled.

[Pgs. 3 - 9]
Whilst waiting to meet up with Ben Reilly (the current Spider-Man), Johnny Storm reminisces about the events of the Christmas prior. That year, Spider-Man and Johnny Storm meet up at the Statue of Liberty to exchange gifts, which is a Christmas tradition for the two of them. The commiserate over how crazy each of their years have been and reminisce over the good ol' days. A touching moment follows as Spider-Man says that he has not been a good friend to Johnny because he's kept secrets from him. The secret he's referring to is his secret identity, Spider-Man then goes to unmask himself. But Johnny stops him and says he doesn't need to know his identity, and that Spider-Man doesn't need the hassle of others knowing his ID. All that matters is that he knows Spider-Man is a friend. He then gives Spidey a gift, a talking Venom doll. Spider-Man gives Johnny a mini Statue of Liberty and on the bottom of it is a phone number. Spider-Man says that's my number and you can call me whenever. This represents another one of those truly heartfelt moments shared between the heroes. What makes this moment more special is that the following Christmas (the contemporary time period for the actual story), Johnny gives Ben Reilly/Spider-Man his phone number and tells him to call him whenever he needs to. *Note Since this is the first (and only!) Christmas with Ben Reilly as the 'real' Spider-Man, the year prior that Johnny is referring to must be the Christmas of the 1994/1995 Holiday Special. Thus, this flashback is placed directly after that holiday season. Spider-Man also references the events of Fantastic Four #362.

"The Far Cry!" (Planet of the Symbiotes Part 1) *Note original MCP list placed the entire "Planet of the Symbiotes" mini series in between pages 11 and 12 of Spectacular Spider-Man #226. However, that does not fit there because there is no break in that story. On page 10 of SSM 226, Peter receives an urgent call from Seward Trainer to come see him at his lab. Peter, MJ (and Ben) go directly to Seward. Peter then finds out he's the clone. Clearly MCP wants the "Planet of the Symbiotes" to occur before Peter is unveiled as the clone. Thus, "Planet of the Symbiotes" must be moved to an earlier place in the chronology. Just before the death of Aunt May fits. First, Peter is placed in prison (although he briefly trades places with Ben whilst incarcerated) after ASM 400, so "Planet of the Symbiotes" cannot be between ASM 400 and SSM 226. "Planet of the Symbiotes" has no mention of Aunt May (alive/dead or in/out of coma). So just before ASM 400 fits with Aunt May situation as well.

Spider-Man is web-swinging through the city following a Spider-tracer that he had placed on the Lizard, who is currently on a rampage through the city. During that rampage, the Lizard attacks 13 year old Kevin Green (aka Prime). However, Kevin cannot shift into his super-powered Prime alter ego and he's dead meat for the Lizard. Spider-Man swoops in and protects him against the Lizard's attack. Spider-Man battles the Lizard and struggles as he tries to rationalize with beast. Kevin is inspired by Spider-Man's valor and conviction to help Connors, not simply beat him to a pulp. Kevin, who was unable to convert to Prime, finds himself morphing into a 'Spider-Prime' like character. Spider-Prime then attacks Lizard and turns the tables on the monster. Kevin swings his 6-arms so wildly that he even knocks out Spidey, making him vulnerable to an attack by the Lizard. Spider-Prime then gives everything he has to take out the Lizard. Spider-Man returns to consciousness to witness this effort, but suddenly both the Lizard and Green disappear into thin air. Spider-Man has no idea where they went but he wishes Prime the best of luck.

Murdock asks Peter if he's still taking photos for the Daily Bugle, Peter says yes but that its not the same anymore (a veiled reference to him no longer being the 'real' Spider-Man). As Ben Reilly swings off, Murdock says he needs to go and Peter, Ben and Karen all realize he's going to change into his DD costume and go confront this 'new' Spider-Man (which he does). *Note This story takes place after ASM 413, because Ben Reilly references his recent battle with Mysterio to Daredevil.

Brief background: Two powerful cosmic beings caused the DC and Marvel Universes to merge into one, leading to an amalgamated universe. However, Axel Asher (aka Access) was able to re-separate the two universes and his job is to keep them that way. However, when Venom suddenly appears in the wrong universe, Access is forced to act. Venom begins causing trouble in Metropolis until Superman takes him on. Unfortunately, Superman struggles against Venom that is...until Spider-Man suddenly arrives (in this story its not clear how Spider-Man got into the DC universe, perhaps by Access?). Nevertheless, Spider-Man and Superman work together to fight Venom. However, Venom escapes. Superman recalls his first encounter with Spider-Man (way back in the Amazing Spider-Man vs Superman Treasury Edition #1). He also notes that Spider-Man had a new costume for a bit (ie, Ben Reilly), Spidey's response, "Don't ask." Spider-Man then tells Superman that Venom's vulnerability is sound, so they Access to S.T.A.R. labs to get a sonic generator. The two heroes then go after Venom. Between Spider-Man, Superman and a sonic generator, Venom is defeated. Spider-Man then rushes him back to their universe before another amalgamation occurs. Spider-Man and Superman part as allies once more.

[Pgs. 1 - 5] "'Twas The Night Before Christmas..." It's early in the day on Christmas Eve, and Peter is out shopping for a gift for Mary Jane. He then gets a page from the Daily Bugle, which is good news because he needs the cash.
|
420.550 |
[Pgs. 1 - 9] Peter Parker gets stuck on Christmas Eve serving as the photographer taking publicity pictures for J. Jonah Jameson's toy giveaway. The toys are so crappy (and old) for the needy kids that Peter remarks this night serves to benefit no one other than JJJ himself. Time passes, the event ends, and JJJ provides Peter with the generous gift of cab fare home. Peter, feeling a little spiteful, dons his Spider-Man costume and instead of going directly home he follows JJJ with the plan of webbing him to a lamppost, to take an hour out of his night. However, when Spidey follows JJJ, the publisher leads him to an old warehouse where Spidey sees all the toys that JJJ must have bought in bulk in the 60s. Suddenly, the roof-window that Spider-Man is watching through, collapses, sending the web-slinger falling toward JJJ. The two find themselves buried in rubble and, worst yet, Spider-Man's mask in JJJ's hands. Spidey thinks quickly and webs up a mask but that uses the last of his webbing (which he says out loud). The two are now stuck in the freezing cold, their only way out is if JJJ seesaws one of the beams off of Spider-Man so he can lift them both out. But Jonah won't do it, he heard Spidey's comment about the last of his webbing so he decides he'll wait it out and the let webbing dissolve, showing him Spider-Man's alter ego. Time passes, the two get colder and colder in the winter air and Spidey pleads with him to change his mind so they don't die of hypothermia. With JJJ beginning to change his mind from the cold, Spider-Man makes one last ditch effort and says he'll never tell a soul anywhere that JJJ saved his life if JJJ would just help him now. Jonah does so, but just at that moment a helicopter light comes shining down on both of them. It's the Daily Globe, who spot the news of JJJ helping his worst enemy. Presumably Spider-Man and JJJ part ways at that point. This allows time for Peter head back home and eventually cross paths with Nate Grey.
|

[Pgs. 6 - 22] After his encounter with JJJ, Peter picks up a few more assignments from the Daily Bugle, one of which is follow up on a street prophet at Washington Square Park. Peter meets Nate Grey for the first time. The story ends, with Peter and MJ asleep in bed on Christmas Eve and Nate Grey provides a psychic vision (which Peter thinks is a dream) of his Aunt May. Aunt May says he has nothing to feel guilty about with the loss of his child and that the baby is safe and happy and that Peter and MJ will be reunited with her someday. Nate Grey then says to himself, "You're welcome, Peter. Merry Christmas!"
|

[Pg. 10] With the Daily Globe having photographic evidence of J. Jonah Jameson saving his worst enemy, the Globe prints it on the front page of their Christmas Edition paper. First thing in the morning on Christmas Day, Peter is at the Daily Bugle watching JJJ trying to purchase every copy of the Globe to stop the news from spreading, recruiting young kids to do so in exchange from Christmas toys.

It's Christmas Day and Peter is at his home in Forest Hills, Queens opening gifts with MJ and Aunt Anna. Suddenly, his Spider-sense warns him of a danger nearby. He investigates his garage and finds Nate Grey, but the X-Man appears to be possessed. Grey explains that on his way back home from Peter's the night prior, he was attacked by something "blue, red and all teeth". Peter recognizes its Morbius and Grey feels as though he's been infected and somewhat under the control of Morbius. Nate tells Peter they need to find his friend, a woman named Threnody. He psi-bafflers may help him deal with his condition. Spider-Man and X-Man are soon en route for Threnody, Grey is actually tracking the scent of the dead (a Morbius power which he now has). This leads them to a graveyard where both Threnody and Morbius are mid-conversation. Spider-Man busts up their conversation (he thought Morbius was attacking her), but then Threnody turns the tables on Spider-Man and attacks her (apparently she simply wanted to be left alone). Meanwhile, Nate Grey attacks Morbius and rids himself of the Vampire's control. Morbius then takes off into the night and Spider-Man follows him. An editorial box states that Spider-Man's story continues in Peter Parker Spider-Man #77. *Note this story takes place on Christmas Day, the day after Amazing Spider-Man #420, Peter references the 'dream' he has of Aunt May and the reader is aware that was induced by Nate Grey in ASM 420.

With his physical body off the North Atlantic coast of Scotland, Nate Grey sends a mental projection to Peter Parker who is in the middle of work at the Daily Bugle. Nate announces to the newsroom that he's looking for Peter Parker, and when Peter comes over, the two go outside to discuss the reason for Nate's visit. Nate tells Peter that he needs help, his telekinetics are burnt out and he's afraid that may be symptomatic of a bigger issue. Peter tells him he's honored that Nate came to see him but that he is way out of his league in trying to solve a problem like this. Peter recommends going to the X-Men, but Nate refuses. However, Peter insists and in not backing down he convinces Nate that he needs to find the right people. As Nate is reading Peter's mind he uncovers that Peter is recommending a visit to Dr. MacTaggert. Grey decides to pay her a visit. Peter is not seen again in the story. *Note This story takes place a few weeks after the events of Amazing Spider-Man #420 according to Peter's conversation with Nate.

The bulk of this appearance is a flashback (see P3 17 11:2-14:1). When Deputy Marshal Basia Sokjtewicz and her partner Jimmy Pascal are in search of a supposedly deceased Frank Castle (aka The Punisher), they decide to stage a fake mugging so they can catch Spider-Man's attention. Their planned works and they get the opportunity to interview the web-slinger for info on Castle. Spider-Man shares a story about the Punisher that (according to Spidey) occurred "some time back." (Again, see P3 17 11:2-14:1). Spidey's advice to the two deputies is straightforward, "[Frank's] got a sense of honor, duty and justice--and a sense of mission...you want to find him, look for those." Spidey then leaves Sokjtewicz and Pascal behind. It's pretty clear this flashback took place not longer after the Punisher first appeared on the scene in Amazing Spider-Man #129 (soon after his family was killed in Central Park). So placing this flashback here in the chronology seems to fit.

When the Puppet Master (aka Philip Masters) makes a clay duplicate of the Silver Surfer, the resulting construct goes on a massive rampage, wreaking havoc across the globe. After the duplicate-Surfer makes its way to New York City, two heroes decide to take up the challenge, Spider-Man and Daredevil. Since the Fantastic Four and the Avengers are no longer around (courtesy of Onslaught), Spidey and DD realize they must take on this fight, despite being massively overmatched. Initially, the two heroes appear to get the upper hand on the Surfer, but the tables quickly turn as it blasts out of Spidey's webbing. The duplicate-Surfer then has no trouble with the two heroes, making quick and easy work out of defeating them. The duplicate doesn't kill them though because he senses some "inherent nobility" in their souls, so instead he encases them in a cocoon. The real Silver Surfer (now in human form) witnesses this and confronts his duplicate. The real Surfer's presence helps calm the duplicate, who soon rationalizes, the only way for either of them to find peace, is for both of them to die. The duplicate frees DD and Spidey from their cocoon then flies off with the real (human) Surfer, who tells the two heroes to help the civilians evacuate. The two Surfers then fly off into a giant cloud of energy!

When the Silver Surfer and Alicia Masters find themselves transported in time back to 1947 New York, Alicia's stepfather Philip Masters (aka The Puppet Master) is left behind and he's screaming for Alicia. Spider-Man spots Philip, who has a clay sculpture of the Silver Surfer (the duplicate-Surfer from the previous issue, now inanimate), and the web-slinger assumes the Puppet Master is up to his old tricks again. When Philip tries to make a run for it, he's confronted by Daredevil who prevents his escape. Suddenly, an alien ship lands close by and an alien race of bio-cybernetic humanoids emerge, who all refer to each other as Ganger. The aliens squabble over whether or not to kill innocent bystanders, regardless their target is Philip. Spider-Man and Daredevil battle some of the aliens but the others manage to abduct Masters. They then take off in their space ship. As Spider-Man and Daredevil neutralize the remaining Gangers, one of them starts counting down. Spidey and DD run for cover as the remaining Gangers self-detonate, leaving no evidence behind. Spider-Man is not seen again in the story.

This Valentine's Day tale featuring Spider-Man and MJ begins with MJ arriving home to an empty house on Valentine's Day. When she hears sounds coming from another room, she approaches cautiously, but is soon pleasantly surprised by her husband, garbed as Spider-Man, holding flowers and candy. The two then share a nice meal as Peter remarks that he played Cupid earlier in the day. Peter then explains further, whilst studying outside the library he witnessed a couple (Roland and Theo) exiting the building. Roland, a rather geeky individual who constantly clears his throat, is carrying a ton of books and appears to have a crush on Theo (who also appears to have feelings for the bookish Roland). As he's walking down the steps, Roland clumsily trips, dropping all his books in front of Theo. Peter, a former nerd himself, realizes he wants to help Roland. He takes Roland shopping and completely changes up his look and teaches him how to talk like a cool guy. Peter tells MJ this and she's aghast, how could Peter do that she says, now their (Roland/Theo) relationship will be built on false premises. MJ tells Peter she fell in love with the geeky guy, the Spider-Man (cool guy) stuff was an unexpected bonus. Soon after, Roland approaches Theo in the library with the new look, Theo is surprised at what she sees. Suddenly, Roland falls clumsily on top of Theo, knocking everything on the table over. Theo says she thought Roland was cool before his change in look, and gives him a hug. Roland says he doesn't understand why he keeps falling over all the time. The final panels reveal Spider-Man (with MJ in tow) having shot a webline on to Roland, making him look geeky and clumsy...reversing the work Peter had done earlier that day. Spidey and MJ then swing off into the city.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance when he pops in on the Silver Surfer and Alicia Masters to alert them about the abduction of Alicia's stepdad, Philip Masters (aka The Puppet Master). As Spider-Man enters through the window of Alicia's home, he tells the Surfer that he saw him doing his "surfboard shuffle across the rooftops," thus he knew where to find him. Referencing events from Silver Surfer (Vol. 3) #129, Spider-Man says that after Alicia and Silver Surfer "departed for parts unknown" Phil was snatched up by "strangely garbed weirdoes in a wild aircraft." Unbeknownst to Spider-Man those “weirdoes” were an alien race called Gangers. The Silver Surfer acknowledges that Phil's abduction is all his fault, and he prepares to leave immediately to remedy this situation. Spider-Man offers his help, but Surfer declines, saying he'd be an encumbrance. Alicia wants to help as well but Surfer declines, however Alicia does not take no for an answer and she persists. Surfer concedes to Alicia's request, however, when Spider-Man offers to make it a trio, the Surfer declines a second time. Spidey leaves saying he can take a hint. Spider-Man is not seen again in the story.

Peter Parker is sent on assignment for the Daily Bugle to snap photos of Henry Peter Gyrich, a special agent for the National Security Council and mouthpiece of the Zero Tolerance (for mutants) movement. After taking photos, Peter decides to track Gyrich as Spider-Man and soon witnesses an assassination attempt by mutants Marrow and Callisto. Spider-Man, despite disagreeing philosophically with Gyrich, thwarts the assassination attempt by the two scorned mutants. In the process of doing so, all three (Spider-Man, Marrow and Callisto) are attacked by Nimrod Battalion Prime Sentinels. These sentinels attempt to kill Spidey and Marrow, but Callisto hops in front of the laser blast, sacrificing herself in the process. As Marrow and Spider-Man are cornered by the sentinels, Gyrich comes to their aid blasting them with all the ammo they have left. This neutralizes the sentinels, but leaves Gyrich vunerable of Marrow's attack. Spider-Man stops her in mid-air and saves Gyrich. He then gives Marrow a lesson about the importance of power and responsibility and warns her not to make the same mistakes he had. Gyrich then pulls his gun on Spider-Man and Marrow, but Spidey knows he's bluffing because he's out of bullets (and his Spider-sense is not triggered). He convinces Gyrich to let Marrow go because "she learned something today" and the web-slinger goes on to say that if she makes the same mistake again, he'll take her in himself. Spider-Man then swings off into the city as Marrow disappears in the sewers below the streets.

Peter Parker makes a brief appearance alongside J. Jonah Jameson and Joe Robertson at the offices of the Daily Bugle as JJJ and Robbie argue over the merits of Nate Grey, the X-Man. Nate had recently prevented a terrorist from killing an entire stadium's worth of people at basketball game at Madison Square Garden. JJJ is, of course, anti-vigilante and Robbie thinks he's a hero and thus wants the heroic headline to stand. Peter thinks to himself that Nate Grey should have listened to his advice and laid low, avoiding the media scrutiny. Peter's final thought to himself is that he was probably wasting his breath on Nate, because we all have to learn from our mistakes. Peter and the crew are not seen again in this story.

He confronts the Hulk who is going crazy, fighting the Thunderbolts and telling them to leave him alone. Spider-Man joins the fray and tries to reason with the green behemoth. Spider-Man does his best to stay alive as he maneuvers through the slugfest occurring between the two Hulks. Still spinning from his trans-dimensional trip, Spider-Man is struggling to figure out exactly where he is. The heroes don't recognize Spider-Man at first, however they do trust each other enough to not battle. The group is then approached by a giant space ship, piloted by Dr. Doom! The arrival of Spider-Man, the multiple Hulks and the testimony from a Celestial named Ashema all work to convince the heroes of this universe that something strange is going on. Ashema explains further that Franklin Richards was given the ultimatum to decide which universe lives or dies. Suddenly, as they look outside the window, see panic in the people outside. Franklin has apparently chosen this world for obliteration.

In order to undo all the trouble Nate Grey has recently caused with his immense power set, he decides to wipe the minds of every New Yorker so they have no memory of his existence. Just as he's about to pull it off, Spider-Man comes out of nowhere to join him on the Brooklyn Bridge. Technically not out of nowhere though, as Spider-Man mentions that Grey called out to him. Because he's Nate Grey's friend, Spider-Man risks going out in public in order to help (this story occurs when Spider-Man has a huge bounty on his head because he's wanted for murder, ie, the Identity Crisis). Nate doesn't take Peter's advice though, and he proceeds to wipe the minds of New Yorkers. Spidey tries to grab a hold of Grey to stop him but the shock from Nate's psionic energies knock Spidey temporarily unconscious. Eventually Spider-Man wakes back up, makes a web-fist and punches Nate in the gut as a last desperate measure. Nate ceases his mind wipe, and instead brings forth the Gwen Stacy from his universe, so-called Age of Apocalypse Gwen. Seeing Gwen on the Brooklyn Bridge is a lot for Peter to handle, but things get worse when two high-tech assassins show up on the bridge to kill Nate. One of them blasts Gwen Stacy off the bridge, and Spider-Man, learning his lesson from the past, jumps down and grabs her with his hands (no webbing this time!). Gwen doesn't stay around long though, when the mercenaries blast Nate, the Gwen he brought forth ceases to exist. Spider-Man, resurfaces atop the bridge ready to exact revenge on the mercenaries. It is certainly worth noting the IMMENSE hypocrisy of Spider-Man's stance against the use of Nate's mind-wipe, when Spider-Man will employ an identical thing a few years later during the infamous Brand New Day storyline.
|
433.200 |
Spider-Man and Nate Grey are able to turn the tables on these assassins and they uncover that they are working for team called 'Gauntlet'. The two psi-ops agents then disappear into thin air. Spider-Man and X-Man cannot track them though because they're distracted with the damage done to the Brooklyn Bridge, which is about to topple over! Spidey and Grey work together to keep the bridge intact and spare the innocent civilians nearby. With things returning to a sense of normal, Spider-Man changes back into his civilian clothes and he and Nate share a hug and an emotional conversation. Nate apologizes for bringing a "Gwen" back into his life and Peter tells Nate that he was hoping to give him some perspective regarding the perils of using a massive mindwipe. The two part on good terms, hoping the each helped the other a bit.

In this flashback sequence an unnamed Assistant DA discusses an instance involving Spider-Man that occurred "a couple of years ago." When she had just began as the Assistant DA, the Mayor put out a mandate to bring Spider-Man to justice at all costs. So they tried to set a trap for him by shining a giant Spider-signal in the sky. Spidey never took the bait, but he did catch up with Assistant DA not long after. He explained he was innocent (she referenced a specific incident involving a robbery, Spidey said it was the Rhino). She asked why he doesn't join a legitimate organization like the Avengers or FF, he says he likes being a freelancer and he's afraid going legit will hit with a bunch of 'super hero back-taxes.' Spidey then swings off. The Assistant DA said that over the years she's grown to like him and thinks he's a good guy. *Note, this flashback had the wrong pages in the original MCP list and it has been moved up in the chronology for a better fit. With the 'catch Spider-Man at all costs' directive from the Mayor, it would make sense that this would occur during the Spider-Hunt saga and not just after when he's cleared by the authorities. Also, the Sensational Spider-Man #31 story (which does feature Rhino) which it was original placed behind, does not involve a bank robbery at all...rather Rhino just trying to be able to feel something.

When Spider-Man tries to confirm the address of the location he's at, the AIM scientists tell him he's got the wrong place...the address he wants is across the street...d'oh!

Spider-Man makes a single panel non-speaking cameo when Psylocke triggers a radical psionic event (a massive discharge of psionic energy) so intense, so pure that it "cleaves through the very fabric of the psi-plane." Every living being is affected by it but those with "intuitive abilities" (ie, Spider-Man's Spider-sense) were effectively crippled by it. Spider-Man's head is shown simply displaying his Spider-sense.

With tears of joy Spidey says how psyched he is for both of them, then reminds Captain Britain that he still owes him rent from back when they were in college (Spidey is of course referring to the classic Marvel Team Up #65 - 66 stories).

After Spider-Man spots Johnny Storm's trail of flames in the sky, he swoops down to check in on his old buddy (who's recently returned from being 'dead'). Johnny is alongside a young lady named Alysande Stuart, and Spidey smoothly introduces himself. While Spidey and Torch argue with each other Alysande takes off down into a subterranean path, tracking a sound she heard. Deep beneath the ground the trio is confronted by Kraven the Hunter (aka Alyosha Kravinoff), who is apparently tracking the same animal Alysande is. When Kraven prepapres to attack Alysande converts into her alter ego, Caledonia! Kraven is able to snare Torch and Caledonia in net, but that doesn't hold long. Caledonia cuts her way out and with all three heroes ready to fight and the 'monster' Kraven is tracking making a loud noise, Alyosha decides it is time to bail. Caledonia then locates what she's been tracking...it's a giant inhuman dog (like Lockjaw). They end up giving it to Franklin Richards who had been struggling with a fear of monsters.

Spider-Man makes two appearances in this story. The first occurs when the Avengers are celebrated in a parade through New York City, with tons of fanfare. The parade and pagentry is in celebration of "Avengers Day". Spider-Man, perched to a nearby building, watches the parade as it goes by. He thinks to himself that he could have been there (since he was an Avenger at one point) but that had he joined the Avengers would be tarred and feathered and not celebrated (due to the Parker luck). He wishes the Avengers to "have a happy" and swings off in to the city. His second appearance is a brief cameo in a splash page that features all the heroes that have ever been an Avenger (there's tons of people on that page). This cameo does not appear to be part of the story narrative (ie, it may not have been included in this list had it been his only appearance).

Spider-Man makes two brief appearances in this story as well. After the Grim Reaper disrupted the "Avengers Day" celebration in Central Park, he sealed them inside an impenetrable green bubble and the whole world witnessed it. Spider-Man, alongside the FF and Daredevil, trying to break through the shield. Later in the story, Spider-Man and the other heroes witness as a news co-host called 'The Stunt Master' uses his jet-assisted stunt-cycle to try and penetrate the force field. Spider-Man remarks, "Hooooboy" to which DD concurs. Suffice to say, Stuntmaster does not penetrate the shield. Spider-Man is not seen again in this story.

[Pgs. 1 - 18] "The Triumph of the Goblin" After Spider-Man uncovers that the 'May' the Goblin was hiding was actually his Aunt May, Peter gets help from Reed Richards to confirm she's the real deal. Richards performs tests and proves she's the real Aunt May, however she has a 'trigger' implanted in the base of her skull (courtesy of Norman Osborn) which will catalyze a global DNA bomb. When Spider-Man confronts the Green Goblin a battle above the streets of New York is waged...and the Goblin is dominating the fight.

During this flashback sequence, the Stalker (aka the man responsible for MJ's kidnapping) tells MJ how he knows that her husband is Spider-Man. During an event that occurred roughly 1 year prior, the Stalker, who is constantly tormented by the voices he hears in his head, was granted a brief moment of silence from those voices. When he looked up a pumpkin bomb was hurling through the air and its explosion blew up part of building. The debris from the explosion was falling directly toward him. Spider-Man swoops in the last second and saves the man. But their brief physical contact led to a connection between the two men in which the Stalker could see Spider-Man's whole life. *Note, the reason for placing this panel at this point in SSM 263 is two-fold. One, the timing of "a year ago" can fit as a time distance between ASM2 29 and SSM 263. Second, at this point in the story of SSM 263, Spider-Man is dropped from the sky to the ground below. So he has the opportunity to potentially help a bystander before he snatched back up again by the Green Goblin (on page 19).

Since Norman Osborn had succumbed to the "Gift of Madness" that he had received from the Gathering of Five ritual, the events of SSM 263 were not completely accurate since they were shared from his skewed perspective. It was Spider-Man rather who was victorious over the Green Goblin. In this flashback sequence, Spider-Man's overtaking of the Goblin on his glider high above the city streets. Spider-Man is wailing on the Goblin as pumpkin bombs fall to the ground below.

In this flashback sequence, Anya Corazon (aka Arana aka Spider-Girl) is consoled by her friend Rocky who shared the story of her mother's death. Rocky's mother was a bike messenger in New York City and she became an innocent victim during a skirmish between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin as they battled high above the city streets. During the ruckus, pumpkin bombs fell to the ground and although Rocky's mom was able to save a small child and her mother, she was unable to save herself. She died instantly and Rocky described the event as having occurred 'three years ago' from the present time in Spider-Girl (V2) #2. Roughly three years would put it around this battle between Spider-Man and Goblin, and the fact that pumpkin bombs were falling so recklessly at this point it works. Also worth noting that this victim, although somewhat similar to the near-miss experienced by the Stalker, is distinguished from that incident because Spider-Man is in the sky fighting the Goblin on his glider and not on the ground below like he was when the Stalker was nearly killed.

This flashback sequence depicts the actual events from SSM 263 into PPSM 98, in which it is Spider-Man who defeats the Green Goblin and not the other way around. Norman is actually re-watching the old video footage in order to help correct his own memory of the events.
