SMURF : Life Without Gwen to Clones and MJ

 Chronology: Comics Index by Date

These are the Spider-Man Unified Reading Flow codes for the SMURF era beginning with 123.500.

This section begins in the aftermath of Gwen's death, as Spider-Man becomes a suspect in her murder. This era features the first Clone Saga as well as some iconic Spider-Man guest appearances like the Death of Captain Marvel. This era ends just as Spider-Man is being transported to Battle World at the beginning of Marvel's Secret War.

[Pg. 1 - Page 10 panel 1] "...Just a Man Called Cage!" Norman Osborn's body is found by the authorities. J. Jonah Jameson was at the crime scene, he's convinced Spider-Man killed Norman. He then hires Luke Cage for $5000 to capture Spider-Man. Meanwhile, Peter, MJ and others attend Gwen's funeral. Soon after, while swinging through the city, Spider-Man is attacked by Luke Cage. After being knocked to a nearby rooftop, Spidey prepares to counter Cage's attack.

Peter Parker makes a trip to San Francisco, on assignment by J. Jonah Jameson, to interview Daredevil. Using his civilian identity, Peter knocks on the door where Daredevil and the Black Widow are staying (he knew which home to go to because he had tracked them as Spider-Man). Daredevil agrees to the interview and lets Peter inside the house. Suddenly, the villain Ramrod comes crashing through the door, he's after the briefcase that Daredevil had been charged with keeping safe (apparently it contains items relevant to the city's 'biggest racket boss'). Ramrod is able to snatch the briefcase and escape, Peter witnesses this and changes into his Spider-Man costume to track Ramrod. On a nearby rooftop, Spidey fires a webline and takes the briefcase from Ramrod. The villain chases Spidey, and he proves difficult to shake for the webslinger. It turns out that the briefcase has a radioactive signal that Ramrod is able to follow. Daredevil and the Black Widow eventually rejoin Spider-Man and help him to defeat Ramrod. Spidey shifts back to his civilian clothes and approaches Daredevil. He asks the hero if they can finish that interview he requested. Daredevil obliges with no questioning as to where and how Peter Parker seemed to come and go. This story takes place not long after both the death of Gwen Stacy and Marvel Team Up #12.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance when Dormammu and Loki use the Evil Eye to merge the Dark Dimension with Earth. The result of that merger is giant monsters (usually forming from human beings) emerging all over the world. Spidey is seen battling one of those monsters. Spider-Man makes a second appearance after Loki and Dormammu are defeated, he's seen with other heroes as they watch the world return to normal.

[Pg. 10 panel 7 - Pg. 11 panel 2] Peter reads Professor Miles Warren's journal, and in this flashback sequence Professor Warren describes a night not long after Gwen Stacy died when he decided to follow Peter Parker. His obsession with Peter was driven by his jealousy of the fact that Peter knew Gwen's love (while Professor Warren never experienced it). Amazingly he witnesses Peter change into Spider-Man, Professor Warren could not believe his eyes. But he knew what he must do, since Spider-Man caused Gwen's death, he must avenge Gwen...and kill Peter Parker!

After the Sub-Mariner's underwater realm is devastated by exposure to a nerve toxin, he searches for a Dr. Damon Walthers who had supposedly been working on the development of a force field-generating device. Namor sought to use this force field tech to protect Atlantis from further harm. En route to finding Walthers, Namor battles costumed baddie named Force. Peter Parker makes a brief cameo at the conclusion of the story, he witnesses Namor battle Force and then ask some ESU students for the whereabouts of Dr. Walthers. Peter decides that he's going to find out what Namor is up to.
129.250
As Namor rampages through the campus of ESU, Spider-Man swings in and tries to calm the Sub-Mariner. Namor doesn't realize that Spidey is the one approaching him, so he tosses the web-slinger against the wall. Tensions calm though soon after, and the two share a conversation. Namor recaps the recent events that led him to the school campus, he then departs Spidey's company in search of Walthers. Spider-Man empathizes with Namor, having recently lost Gwen Stacy, because Namor fears losing his entire city. Spider-Man does not appear again in this story. Namor eventually reaches Walthers, only to find out that the villain he had just fought, Force, has stolen the only protoype of force field machine. Namor eventually defeats Force by himself and uses the force field to protect Atlantis.

[Pg. 1 - Page 12 panel 3] "Betrayed!" Spider-Man defeats a half dozen or so of the Jackal's 'bum men,' then test drives his new Spider-Mobile! As Peter Parker, he's joined by MJ as she escorts him to ESU. She's appointed herself Peter's guardian angel, assuring that he doesn't foul up college any more than he already has. This portion of the story takes place a few days before Christmas. The narration box after page 12 panel 3 states that "3 days pass and on the nigh of the fourth day...", thus that is when action resumes on page 12 panel 4, allowing some stories to take place within ASM 130.
130.750
[Pgs. 16 - 17] After being approached by a former associate of hers, a man named Brady who is now a SHIELD agent, MJ shares a story of one of her first 'dates' with Peter. During the flashback sequence, MJ had asked Peter to make a music tape for her, so that could find some music they both enjoy. Peter instead makes a 'nerdy' tape with recordings from the Nova channel and lectures from Richard Feynman. She describes how she wants Peter to like her, and even kiss her, but Peter seems too distracted and shy to act on anything. She even breaks out a mistletoe Christmas hat, but Peter doesn't bite.
130.751
[Pgs. 20 - 21] During a separate conversation that Peter is having with Detective Lamont, Peter shares the exact same story from above (ie, MJ's mistletoe hat Christmas date story). Scene depicts slightly different angles.

Spider-Man makes a brief cameo alongside the Black Panther as the two battle Stegron's dinosaur army in the streets of New York City!

[Pg. 11 panel 2 - Pg. 14 panel 1] When Deputy Marshal Basia Sokjtewicz and her partner Jimmy Pascal are in search of a supposedly deceased Frank Castle (aka The Punisher), they decide to stage a fake mugging so they can catch Spider-Man's attention. Their planned works and they get the opportunity to interview the web-slinger for info on Castle. Spider-Man shares a story about the Punisher that (according to Spidey) occurred "some time back." The gist of the story is pretty simple, Spider-Man is web-slinging through the city and he finds some thugs chasing down some guy. Turns out that 'guy' was one of the people involved in killing Castle's family. The mob wanted him dead, because they thought that would end The Punisher's terrorizing of their organization. Spidey recognizes the man as Rocco Venturi. After questioning Venturi, he protects him from the criminals who were trying to kill him. Spider-Man says that Venturi eventually went in to protective custody but was found dead six days later. He did not know whether the mob or Castle killed Venturi. Spidey's advice to the two deputies is straightforward, "[Frank's] got a sense of honor, duty and justice--and a sense of mission...you want to find him, look for those." Spidey then leaves Sokjtewicz and Pascal behind. It's pretty clear this flashback took place not longer after the Punisher first appeared on the scene in Amazing Spider-Man #129 (soon after his family was killed in Central Park). So placing this flashback here in the chronology seems to fit.

Peter Parker makes a brief appearance when Phil Sheldon, the focus of this story, attends the Daily Bugle's party celebrating Peter's nomination for Photographer of the Year. Phil, a fellow photographer, is disgusted by Peter's nomination and refers to him as a 'snot'. Sheldon even remarks to Joe Robertson that, "Some punk kid makes a specialty smearing Spider-Man, and that's in the family?" That comment was in regards to Joe suggesting it would be nice if Peter won, just like Phil had, because that would keep the award in the Daily Bugle family. Peter even approaches Phil and says, "...I just want to say, I'm honored to even be--", but before Peter can finish his sentence Sheldon cuts him off mid-sentence. After blowing by Peter, Sheldon says, "Out of my way, Parker!" As a brief side note, MJ appears to be Peter's date for the festivities. Angered, Sheldon bails out of the party and soon finds himself in a back alley on his way home. He's nearly mugged by some thugs, but, luckily for him, Spider-Man swings in takes out the thugs. After webbing up the criminals, Spidey tells Phil he should return to the party he came from (the web-slinger can tell he came from a party because he was so well dressed). This story takes place not long after Spider-Man and the Black Panther battled Stegron's dinosaurs in Marvel Team Up #20.

[Pgs. 1 - 7] "Ship of Fiends!" Aunt May contracted a new strain of the flu, so Spider-Man is forced to intercept the discoverer of the novel vaccine who is en route to the country via boat. Spidey decides to reach out to the Fantastic Four, and Johnny Storm provides the web-slinger with the much needed ship.
134.000
"The Night of the Frozen Inferno" Spider-Man makes a brief appearance at the beginning of this story, as Johnny Storm has just lent him one of the Fantastic Four's sky-fliers so that he can rush to get his Aunt May a vaccine. The reader is then directed to read Giant Size Spider-Man #1.
134.100
[Pgs. 8 - 30] Spidey battles the Maggia and even crosses paths with Dracula whilst retrieving the vaccine for his Aunt May. He and Dr. A.J. Maxfield (the woman who discovered the vaccine) return safely to New York aboard the FF's skyflyer.
134.300
"Auto Motives" Spider-Man and the Human Torch battle the Red Ghost and his apes, they also have a bit of a joy ride in the Spider-Mobile. This story is set shortly after Doc Ock tried to marry Aunt May, and not too long after the death of Gwen Stacy (which still weighs heavily on Peter even in this light-hearted story).

Spider-Man makes a brief non-speaking cameo as he swings by the office of J. Jonah Jameson. The Daily Bugle publisher was in the middle of a personal crisis as his son once again reverted to his Man-Wolf persona. When Jameson sees Spider-Man swing by he believes that Spidey is coming to harass him, but the web-slinger never stops at the Daily Bugle. Jameson remarks to himself that Spider-Man doesn't have the evidence to prove John is the Man-Wolf, but what actually may be bothering him more is that Spidey knows John's secret. *Note, Spider-Man also makes a brief appearance in this story during a flashback cameo referencing the events of Amazing Spider-Man #124-125. Flashback cameos are not included in this list unless they bring new information/perspectives/etc on an existing story entry.

Spider-Man makes a brief non-speaking cameo when Iron Man and the Sentry are trapped back in time with Doctor Doom. There's no clear point in the chronology to put this story, it is clear that it takes place early in the Marvel Universe. Gag 'editorial' comments are on the various pages, and Morbius is mentioned in one of them. So its clear anytime after Morbius shakes up the Marvel Universe is fair game, so placing it here in the chronology can fit.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance subduing a group of criminals and leaving them webbed up for the police. He beats the police to the punch, they were about to raid the apartment, but upon entry they realize the web-slinger already got them. It appeared as though these were corrupt cops, about to take the money the criminals were hiding. But Spidey's presence in the room forced them to do otherwise. This story takes place not long after the Punisher makes his debut in the Marvel Universe, so the placement here in the chronology can work. The only concern is that Cloak and Dagger are also present, not to Spider-Man or the public, within the story. This would push their origin back a bit, but could still work.
143.250
Spider-Man makes a brief non-speaking cameo as heroes across the world have been suddenly trapped inside a force field. Spidey is shown trapped inside on in New York City, it is unclear how long he is trapped or what he was doing when he was trapped. Thor seemed to be the only hero that did not succumb to that fate, as the Pentagon requests his presence and they brief him on the events. The force fields appear to be the work of Loki.
143.500
[Pgs. 1 - 6] "...And the Wind Cries: Cyclone!" As Spider-Man, Peter sees a woman that resembles Gwen Stacy, he thinks he's losing his mind. After Joe Robertson shows Peter a letter from J. Jonah Jameson that suggests the publisher is in trouble in Paris, the two decide to go to Paris to investigate.
143.600
[Pg. 26 - Page 27 panel 2] During a flashback sequence, MJ describes the events that led to her first kiss with Peter. MJ had accompanied Peter to the airport to see him off on his trip to Paris. She wants their relationship to mature, but she's not sure Peter is ready for that. The two share coffee and even try to bring Joe Robertson into the conversation, the editor doesn't bite and just quietly reads his newspaper.
143.700
[Pgs. 7 - 18] While waiting for his flight at Kennedy International Airport, Peter kisses MJ for the first time! MJ is shocked (but appreciative), she didn't think Peter had it in him! He then takes a flight to Paris and has a run-in with Cyclone, who gets the better of the web-head.

[Pg. 1 - Page 11 panel 2] "Gwen Stacy is Alive... and Well...?!" After accusing the Gwen Stacy clone of being an imposter, Peter visits his Aunt May in the hospital. He hears news of a robbery committed by the Scorpion and decides to go looking for him. After a few panels showing Spidey's search, the reader is directed to read Marvel Team Up #33, which occurs during the events of Amazing Spider-Man #145.
145.600
"Anybody Here Know a Guy Named Meteor Man?" An editor's note inside this story states that the events in MTU #33 take place within Amazing Spider-Man #145.
145.700
[Pg. 11 panel 3 - End of page 18] Spider-Man eventually tracks down the Scorpion but is defeated by the villain. Peter then returns to the hospital to see Aunt May. At the hospital, in front of MJ, Joe Robertson and the mysterious new Gwen, Ned Leeds tells Peter that this is the real Gwen Stacy!

[Pgs. 1 - 15] "Even if I Live, I Die!" Spider-Man battles his clone and the Jackal at Shea Stadium. The conflict ends in a giant explosion, leaving both Spidey and his clone unconscious in the rubble below.
149.650
[Pg. 11 panel 5 - Pg. 12 panel 1] The Jackal inspects the two unconscious Spider-Men and determines which one is the real Spider-Man. He then injects the real Spider-Man with a drug that would simulate death. However, unbeknownst to the Jackal, Norman Osborn had orchestrated a plot that superceded the one put forth by Miles Warren. Osborn had his Scrier agents force Seward Trainer to tamper with Warren's instruments such that he would not be able to detect the 'real' Peter Parker, but rather the clone. This allowed Osborn to control the stakes and force Warren to target the wrong Peter (ie, the clone Peter).
149.700
[Pgs. 16 - 18] Spider-Man emerges from the rubble and confirms that Ned Leeds is still alive. The Gwen Stacy clone goes on her way, leaving Peter's life (for the time being) and Peter returns to MJ.
150.000
[Pg. 8 panel 2] In a flashback sequence, Ben Reilly describes the events from Amazing Spider-Man #149. After awaking from the rubble, the clone returns to Peter's apartment and sees MJ and Peter embraced. This takes place just after the last panels of Amazing Spider-Man #149. Seeing Peter and MJ together reinforces the notion to Ben that he is a clone, he decides that he is going to have to find a way to 'resurrect himself.'

Spider-Man crosses paths with Howard the Duck for the first time when he's sent on-assignment by J. Jonah Jameson to Cleveland, Ohio to follow up on rumors of a 'duck that talks like a man!' After arriving in Cleveland and persistently searching for this duck, Spider-Man eventually spots a giant bird that is chasing after Howard and his new friend Beverly Switzler. Both Howard and Beverly are dressed in the style of Conan the Barbarian. Aside from the giant bird, an evil Financial Wizard, Pro-Rata, is also after Howard and Beverly. Spider-Man hitches a ride on a helicopter to get closer to the scene. Pro-Rata wants the Gem Key that Howard had snatched from his castle earlier in the story. Howard tosses the key over a cliff to prevent the wizard from getting it, Spidey shoots a web-line and grabs the key. At this point, Spider-Man is not sure who is good and who is bad in this scenario. When Pro-Rata attempts kill Spidey to get the key, Howard dives at the villain and they both fall toward a giant pit of fire. Spider-Man shoots a webline and saves Howard, whilst Pro-Rata falls to his 'death.' Spider-Man and Howard the Duck exchange some witty dialogue (ie, Web-Foot meets Web-Head!), they soon part ways as Spidey gives chase to Pro-Rata's giant bird that got away while the two were talking. It's not clear if Spidey got the photos of Howard that Jonah had requested, but Spidey leaves on good terms with his new duck friend.

Peter Parker makes a brief cameo when the Daredevil is arrested by the authorities for the murder of the Jester. As a handcuffed Daredevil is being brought in to the police station, the press gather around the entrance. Peter Parker is among them and he tries to ask Daredevil a question, but DD quickly retorts, "No comment, kid. Strictly no comment!" Peter remarks that his Spider-Sense is tingling and that DD is up to something, but he'll let him handle this alone. Interestingly, Peter's opening remark to DD is that he (Peter) has met Daredevil before. Also interesting is that Peter appears to be on the scene more as a reporter/journalist, than a photographer. Perhaps he does both roles from time to time!

The police on the scene ask Peter for ID, and he says he's with the Daily Bugle...on assignment. MJ quickly chimes in and says, "no he isn't--we were on a date." Peter Parker makes a brief appearance in the offices of the Daily Bugle when Amber Grant confronts J. Jonah Jameson regarding his failure to compensate her for the photos he used for the newspaper. According to Ms. Grant, she and Jonah had an agreement on a pay rate for the photos she sold of Omega and Hulk, and Jonah claimed that rate was too high. After a handful of fairly misogynistic comments, Amber's young friend, J.M., jumps in a gives Jonah an earful about how he's violated the legality of their agreement. A stumped JJJ is forced to pay up for Amber. Peter overhears the whole conversation and approaches the young fellow and asks if he could consult on Peter's behalf (since he's been selling photos to Jameson for years and has been getting ripped off). 162.725
[Pgs. 1 - 4] "...Am I Now or Have I Ever Been?" Spider-Man hops down to street-level and trails Deathlok. Spidey stops Deathlok as the cyborg takes aim at what appears to be a group of civilians. Spider-Man and Deathlok battle one another.
162.730
[Pg. 5 panel 4] Flashback panel that shows Spider-Man dodging a blast from Deathlok's gun.
162.735
[Pgs. 5 - 17] Deathlok explains to Spider-Man what is really going on with these 'civilians.' Basically they're mutants and that they're holding Power-Cubes. Deathlok and Spidey make their first official introduction to one another then Deathlok tells Spider-Man that they're in the year 1990 (not 1975 which Spidey was expecting). The two then team up to defeat the radioactive mutants and their leader. Spidey and Deathlok then part ways on good terms, as the web-slinger uses Doom's Time-Platform to return to 1975. Spidey's adventure then continues in Marvel Two-In-One #17.
162.740
Spider-Man returns to NYC in 1975, but the traveling via Doom's Time-Platform leaves him woozy and with a bit of amnesia (he's not sure what just happened to him, ie, what happened in Marvel Team Up #46). Spidey then returns home to study for his upcoming final exam. After a few hours of studying, Peter is startled by a what appears to be a giant earthquake. After a phone call from MJ (in which Peter comes off as a total jerk), Peter decides he has to go investigate the disturbance as Spider-Man. He then makes his way to the Hudson River and discovers a giant volcano has emerged from the water, and it is surrounded by molten lava and fire. Spidey cleverly constructs a web-disc that he uses to shield himself from the fire than as a boat to make his way to the volcano. When he reaches the erupting volcano he finds Basilisk holding The Thing above his shoulders, prepared to toss him into the fires below. Instead, Basilisk tosses The Thing at Spider-Man, and fortunately, Grimm is still alive. The two prepare to battle Basilisk atop the volcano. This story continues directly into Marvel Team Up #47.

Peter Parker and MJ make a brief appearance when Howard the Duck and Beverly Switzler arrive in New York City searching for her friends house in the Village. Howard and Beverly get lost en route to her friend's house and decide to ask the first people they see that don't look like 'deranged killers' to ask for directions. The lucky two they spot that fit that bill (pun intended!) are Peter and MJ. Peter recognizes Beverly immediately (which makes MJ a bit jealous), and almost blows his secret identity (he recognizes her from Howard the Duck #1). MJ ends up providing directions to the duo, and as Howard leaves Peter and MJ behind he remarks, "as long as we're trudgin' away from that baby-faced masher!" Howard's hilarious dig on Peter is the last we see of Spidey and MJ in this story.
163.500
[Pgs. 1 - 9] "All the Kingpin's Men!" Spider-Man stops a group criminals robbing a truck (whilst using a helicopter to do so), unbeknownst to the web-slinger the Kingpin was behind the attempted heist. Peter then returns to his apartment and walks into a surprise party thrown by his friends who have furnished his apartment! The reader is then directed to read Spectacular Spider-Man #1.

[Pgs. 10 - 17] A 24 hour gap in this story is acknowledged by the editor to allow for the events of Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #1 (and, in this chronology list, Marvel Team Up #52). Spider-Man battles the Kingpin and is defeated. The web-slinger finds himself the Kingpin's captive, as the crimelord proceeds to 'stealing [the web-head's] life!'

Jonah Jameson as the new editor of the Daily Bugle's new women's magazine called 'Woman.' MJ recognized Danvers after she emerged from Jonah's office having just haggled over her salary and the content of the newly proposed magazine. MJ was able to spot Danvers because she had been featured in a recent Rolling Stone magazine. MJ then introduces Peter to Carol, who recognizes Peter because he had just been nominated for last year's Newsguild Award. Peter says hello, then heads into Jameson's office, while MJ and Carol spend some time together. Peter is not seen again in the story. As Ms. Marvel, Carol Danvers ends up saving Jameson after he's kidnapped by the Scorpion. She's able to defeat Gargan, who had plotted his revenge against Jameson over the years of hate he's built toward the publisher for turning him into the Scorpion. Interestingly, Carol Danvers doesn't know she's Ms. Marvel at this point, which adds an interesting bit of intrigue since Jameson wants her to editorialize on the new super heroine in their new Woman magazine.

After news of a battle between the band Kiss and Dr. Doom gets out, J. Jonah Jameson demands his ace photographer get out there and snap some photos of the event (since every other paper is already out there covering the story as well). Peter then dons his Spidey costume and goes looking for the band. The band is teleported to a few different realms, so there was no chance for Peter to find them anyway. He's not seen again in the story. As a side note, Doom eventually sends Kiss back to Earth, he had grown tired of their fight and told them to 'begone!'.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance tossing snow from tree limb on to Ben Grimm. Spider-Man was attending The First Annual United Charities Snowball Fight on the rugby and softball fields of Central Park. The event was also attended by the Avengers, Fantastic Four and other Marvel super heroes. *Note, the original placement of this entry in MCP was within Amazing Spider-Man #166, which concludes with a Christmas day epilogue. But there is no reason that the scenes from Marvel Treasury Edition #13 couldn't have happened the day after Christmas. All that's needed is snow on the ground as there is no mention in the story of the exact date, other than around the Christmas holiday. In fact, a great time for a charity snowball fight could be in between the Christmas and New Year holidays! This makes for a simpler list and removes the need to split up Amazing Spider-Man #166 in to two entries.

Peter Parker becomes a prime suspect in the murder of Dr. Ralph Rider (who also happens to be the uncle of Richard Rider, aka Nova!). Upon a recommendation from Dr. Curt Connors, Peter decided to study using the resources in Dr. Rider's library (apparently he has a first class physics library). Suddenly, the evil villain Photon melted the walls, knocked Peter unconscious and killed Dr. Rider. Peter had to pull his punches against the villain as to not give away his identity, ultimately that decision cost Dr. Rider his life. Richard Rider doesn't trust Peter, but ultimately they both decide to investigate the matter as their alter egos. As Spider-Man, Peter comes across Michael Lincoln, Dr. Rider's lab assistant who held a grudge against his former boss. Lincoln becomes a suspect. Soon after, Spidey confronts Nova for the first time, the two trade blows but then become uneasy allies as they rally around the idea that Lincoln could be the murderer. They bring Lincoln to the authorities investigating the crime, but Lincoln pleads he's innocent. Suddenly, Photon returns and Nova and Spidey team up to fight the villain. Unfortunately, he manages to escape the two heroes. The story wraps no closer to answer over the killer's id than when the story began. The reader is then directed to reading the continuation of this story in Amazing Spider-Man #171. *Note, this story uses the hilarious plot device of having Spider-Man leave the room so he can go get Peter Parker who was in a different room of the same house. How did no one put that together that they're one in the same!

When Peter Parker joins a press junket and hops on a flight from NYC to Houston, his plane is hijacked by a villain named Mercenary. The Human Fly, who was close by on the ground below, makes his way up to the plane and attempts to thwart the hjacking. This distraction caused by the Human Fly attacking the Mercenary and his men provides Peter Parker with the perfect opportunity to change into his Spider-Man costume. While changing, Peter acknowledges that the whole reason he attended this press junket was to find out if this Human Fly was connected to the Human Fly he fought in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #10. He soon realizes they are not connected to one another. Spider-Man and the Human Fly then team up to defeat the Mercenary and his men. The villains try to escape by jumping out of the plane, but the Human Fly and the web-slinger follow them out of the plane and fight them in the air! Spidey then helps the Human Fly land safely on the ground below, using a web-parachute. The Mercenary, who's jetpack failed him during his escape, was unconscious and on the ground as well. Spidey then quickly leaves the Human Fly so that he can return to the flight without people noticing Peter Parker is missing. It's unclear how Spider-Man makes his way back up to a plane high up in the sky. Perhaps the plane had landed after the hijackers tried to jump out of the plane. With Spidey gone, the Human Fly receives all the accolades from the press and bystanders as the hero who saved the plane!

[Pgs. 5 - 21] During a flashback sequence, Brian Braddock describes a story that occurred around the time he was Peter Parker's roommate (as part of an exchange program, Brian became Peter's roommate in Marvel Team Up #65). Brian describes how Spider-Man serves as a mentor to Captain Britain, who had just begun his super-hero career. As a roomate, however, Brian left a lot to be desired, he was a terribly slob and Peter was very annoyed to have to clean up after him. Brian was also a heavy drinker, which he attributed to the stress of being a student and a newly minted super hero. One night when Spider-Man tried to give Captain Britain some advice, the British hero basically told Spidey to piss off. The two then go their separate ways and the agitated Captain Britain soon stumbles upon a crime in progress. The criminals morph into a pack of dogs and call themselves The Litter. Britain is soon overwhelmed by the pack, but Spider-Man swings in and bails him out. During the ruckus, Captain Britain hit one of the villains so hard he nearly killed her. Out of shame, Cap bails on the scene, leaving Spidey to deal with the authorities. Braddock wanders the streets for hours and eventually returns to Peter's apartment. Unfortunately, Peter has Braddock's bags all packed and says he needs to move out. Peter tells him that Braddock needs to admit his problems (drinking, lack of accountability, etc) before he can work on them. Until then, there's nothing more Peter can do for him. Braddock cites that day as the time he started to get his life back on track.

Sound asleep in his bed at 3am, Peter Parker begins having visions of Thanos and his defeat of the Avengers deep in space. Moondragon had beamed the visions to Peter telepathically in order to solicit the web-slinger's help to save them from Thanos (who had just taken possession of the Soul Gem). Realizing that he is hopelessly outgunned for a space battle with Thanos, Spider-Man heads over to the Baxter Building to seek help from the Fantastic Four. Ben Grimm is the only member there when Spidey arrives, and after a brief spat between the two, the web-slinger explains his visions to Grimm. The Thing trusts Spidey enough to take him at his word and the two heroes hop on one of Reed's spaceships and head toward Thanos' ship. Once they track down the Mad Titan's space cruiser (which is huge!), the two board the ship and immediately find themselves battling the alien guards onboard. Thanos sees the success Spidey and the Thing are having against his guardsmen so he removes the gravity from the room, causing everyone to float. This enables Thanos to easily snare both of them. Before they know it, Grimm and Spidey find themselves in front of the Mad Titan staring at a motionless set of the Avengers! Thanos had defeated them and made trophies of the heroes, he then promises Grimm and Spidey they would suffer the same fate. The Thing attempts to fight Thanos head-on but is immediately destroyed when Thanos uses his immense powers (via the Soul Gem) against Grimm. Spider-Man witnesses this and thinks to himself he has no chance against Thanos. So, in an unusual bit of cowardice, Spidey makes a run for it. He soon changes his mind though and decides to come back (his reversal of thought is witnessed by the powerful space-gods Lord Chaos and Master Order who comment on the strength of the heart of the Earthman, ie Spidey). When the web-slinger returns to Thanos' trophy room (ie, where the Avengers are held captive), he realizes he must break the device that is holding the Avengers motionless. With limited options, Spider-Man decides to throw himself into the machine, freeing the Avengers but incapacitating himself in the process. A giant battle ensues as the Avengers and Grimm take on Thanos whilst Spidey is passed out. But the Mad Titan holds his own, fending off the attack from the heroes. Soon after, Spidey regains his consciousness and sees that his fellow heroes are losing. He realizes he must do something and that the burden of defeating Thanos falls on to him. Interestingly, his Spider-sense acts up in strange way, instead of warning him of a nearby danger, it leads him to the solution...the Soul Gem (which was encased in a glass globe)! Whilst fighting off alien guards, Spider-Man makes his way to the glass globe and knocks it off its pedestal, the globe then falls to ground and shatters...sending out a giant explosion of light and energy. Suddenly, Adam Warlock takes form from the energy, he then attacks Thanos and turns the titan into stone! Spider-Man and the Avengers are victorious, but it cost Adam Warlock his life in the process. The heroes mourn his loss but are happy to have saved Earth!

Peter tries to calm MJ by telling her its just some kind of 'freak storm', but his Spider-sense warns him that something really bad is happening. Before this alternate universe story about different people in Peter's life gaining spider powers begins, there's a brief moment where the 'real' (ie, 616 Universe) Spider-Man is being observed by the Watcher. As Spider-Man is patroling the city, he's alerted to danger by his Spider-sense. He then sees that a young boy had fallen from a window of a highrise building nearby. Without hesitating the web-slinger swoops in a saves the falling boy. The boy then invites Spidey over for dinner, but the wall-crawler says he has another engagement (event though he really doesn't). Spidey then takes off on his way and the Watcher then begins bending the fabric of time (thus ushering in the alternate universes). *Note, interestingly in all three of the alternate universe stories (Betty Brant, John Jameson and Flash Thompson gaining spider powers), Peter Parker ultimately becomes Spider-Man after they do...the Watcher says that Peter Parker will always inevitably become Spider-Man.

When the murderous villain Lunatik goes on killing spree on the ESU campus, the Defenders concoct a wonky scheme to bring him (and Spider-Man) out of the woodwork. Lunatik's murders were shrouded with 'irrational ethics', killing scofflaws for minor offenses like littering. In order to get his attention, the Defenders decide to erect a statue in Spidey's honor, because Spidey is a super-scofflaw (and he also has a tendency to hang out on the ESU campus)! Peter Parker gets involved once J. Jonah Jameson finds out (via the New York Post!) that Spider-Man will have a statue dedication at ESU. An angry and frustrated Jameson sends Peter out to get the scoop. Admittedly, Peter is also confused about what is going on because he had no idea of this happening either. Eventually the statue arrives on the ESU campus, covered by a tarp before its unveiling, and Spider-Man stakes out the nearby area for any activity. Soon after, his Spider-sense leads him to tracking Hellcat, a member of the Defenders, who explains their plan to the web-slinger. When Spider-Man heads toward the statue to protect some innocent bystanders, he's attacked by Lunatik! The entire Defenders team joins the fight, but Lunatik gets the upper hand when he fires his staff at Valkyrie and knocks her from her pegasus. Spider-Man is distracted and saves Valkyrie from her fall with a web-net, but this allows Lunatik to use the tarp from the statue to toss it over web-slinger and Hellcat. Lunatik then escapes, but Spider-Man and the Defenders are also distracted by the statue itself....it's hideous!

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance as Godzilla ends his reign of destruction in New York City and retreats into the New York Bay. Spidey was late (the Avengers and Fantastic Four had been dealing with the monster), and was only able to snap some quick photos before Godzilla disappeared into the water. Of course earlier in the story, J. Jonah Jameson was trying to find Peter so he could photograph the incident, unfortunately, according to Joe Robertson, Peter just wasn't home to answer his phone. As Spider-Man is swinging through the city, anticipating his upcoming date with Cissy Ironwood, he bumps into Scott Summers and Colleen Wing who are out on a date. After saying 'hi' and then leaving, Spidey witnesses the two heroes get abducted by a tricked-out sanitation truck. Spider-Man immediately recognizes the truck as one similarly used by Arcade when the villain had kidnapped he and Captain Britain in Marvel Team Up #65. Realizing he must act, Spider-Man quickly phones Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, however it is too late...because Arcade picks up the phone! He then tells Spider-Man that after he's done with the X-Men, he's coming after him (then the phone booth Spidey is in seems to implode)! The web-slinger is not seen again in this story and soon after, Arcade has the entire X-Men team trapped in his Murderworld. Placing this story here in the chronology works because Peter dated Cissy Ironwood briefly around this time Marvel Team Up #80 and 81. Potential discontinuity over these few issues where Peter is dating Cissy Ironwood, Peter and MJ don't officially break up until Amazing Spider-Man #193, so his dates with Cissy appear to not fit continuity at this point. It should be mentioned that all issues featuring Cissy and Peter are written by Chris Claremont.

Peter Parker and Mary Jane make a brief cameo when the Daredevil was looking out of his window and sees the two of them. Murdock comments on how perfect their life must be and how they've got it all figured out. Lots of irony there, but the biggest irony is that Peter has always envied Daredevil because he'd always envied the respect and treatment he perceived ol' hornhead received. Its unclear if he recognized the man as Peter Parker or whether Murdock thought it was just a random happy couple. Peter Parker makes a brief cameo at a press conference where Captain America apologizes for his actions (essentially fighting as a pro-Nazi) whilst under the mind control of Dr. Faustus. Amongst the crowd of reporters, Peter is there taking photos and he thinks to himself, "Cap looks exhausted...I know exactly how he feels." Peter is not seen again in this story.

When Peter Parker is sent on-assignment by the Daily Globe to L.A. to "snap a few rolls of some pop psyche clinics" he crosses paths with Jessica Drew (aka Spider-Woman). Inside the Hatros Institute, Peter's Spider-sense goes wild when he senses Spider-Woman returning money (that she had 'stolen' prior because it was owed to her as back-pay after she was fired). Startled by Peter's arrival, Spider-Woman blasts him with her bioelectric venom, sending Peter unconscious to the floor. When he wakes up, Peter dons his Spider-Man costume and heads out to find this mysterious woman. Eventually he tracks her, the two fight for a bit, and when Spider-Woman nearly escapes, Spidey shoots a web-line to her foot. This only serves to pull her boot off her foot and Spidey begins free-falling from the sky. Realizing Spider-Man is in trouble, Spider-Woman turns back and saves him. The two then have a meaningful discussion about being a super hero. Spidey trusts her story (ie, that she was returning money, not stealing it) and then he goes on his way. The two part as friends, although, interestingly, Spider-Man never got her (costumed-hero) name. All this begs the question, if she was doing good and only returning money...why did it trip Peter's Spider-sense in the first place?

When news buzz that Captain America may run for president hits the streets, Spider-Man makes a brief cameo mulling over that notion. Spidey, whilst perched upside down on a lamp post, thinks to himself, "Funny, I never thought of Cap as the political type!" Spider-Man is not seen again in the story. Interestingly, Joe Robertson and J. Jonah Jameson discuss this same topic in the offices of the Daily Bugle and Jonah is conflicted. He thinks Cap is a good man but is afraid of the slippery slope...and he nearly chokes on his cigar when Joe suggests that this could lead to Spidey running for mayor of New York City!

Spider-Man, who had just met Dazzler in Amazing Spider-Man #203, makes a brief appearance when he spots Alison Blaire (aka Dazzler) running from some thugs and being chased into a back alley. Spidey swoops in and defeats the street-toughs easily, he even prevents a few from escaping. Dazzler tells Spidey that her manager, an owner of a local disco, is also an underworld heavy weight...and apparently he wants her to work for free. The thugs were there to make sure she knows that. Spidey and Dazzler then part ways, the web-slinger is not seen again in this story.

One of Dazzler's disco performances one Friday night was filled with guests AND filled with celebrity superheroes! Peter Parker attended the disco as well, however things went awry when the Enchantress crashes the party. All the heroes change from the civilian id to their super hero version, including Peter. The web-slinger runs to the bathroom to change but is disappointed because he was "groovin' on a perfect 10!" Shortly after there's a battle royale as all the heroes battle the demons summoned by the Echantress. Realizing she's defeated, Enchantress bails but swears revenge on Dazzler. The Avengers use their quinjet to take Dazzler (and Spider-Man!) back to the city. Soon after, Spider-Man is amongst various super heroes who hang outside the office of a music executive and pressure him to sign Dazzler to a contract. Dazzler then performs and the exec signs her!

Story continued from Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #42. Spidey has been captured by the Frightful Four and now the Trapster is disguised as Spidey in order to break in to the Baxter Building. The rest of the Frightful Four wait outside the Baxter Building in their hover ship with the captive Spidey. The plan works and the Frightful Four infiltrate the FF's headquarters. Spider-Man realizes he needs to act, so he uses the pressure from the bottom of the hover ship to break his bonds (made from the Trapster's paste). Spidey then comes crashing inside the headquarters and helps the Fantastic Four defeat the villains. After they have the Frightful Four ready for prison, Spidey realizes he left his date with Debra Whitman and he must quickly return to her. Spidey leaves the Baxter Building as quickly as he arrived.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance thousands of miles from the action of the main story (which takes place in LA) when he's in New York City reading a newspaper article on Spider-Woman. When he first reads the article, he recognizes her from when he met her in LA in Spider-Woman #20. He expresses concern about how much tougher things can be on her now that she's a public figure, but then realizes Spider-Woman seemed strong enough to handle that pressure. Peter Parker, covering the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid for the Daily Globe, finds himself unable to fall asleep in his press dorm room. Soon after, he hears a noise and he quickly changes in to his Spider-Man costume. As Spidey, he witnesses the abduction of the Olympic skater, Maria Karsov. She's encased in diamond-like structure and pulled underground, Spider-Man is unable to save her. As it turns out, she's the third Olympian to be kidnapped. Peter becomes convinced he should protect Brad Rossi, a top-rate Olympic skier, since he might be next. Peter, alongside other super heroes in their civilian identities, watch Brad's ski events. Interestingly, after Brad suffers the same fate as Maria (encased in a diamond-like and sucked underground), only Peter dons his Spider-costume to try and save him. Meanwhile, the Hulk is approached by a woman named Kala, who claims to be the queen of the subterranean. She tells the Hulk that she wants him to fight as her champion and to be her King, she then puts the Hulk under her spell. In the process of looking for the lost Olympians, Spider-Man crosses paths with the underground villain Mole-Man, who explains Kala's past. Bottom line, Kala is trying to get to the Fountain of Youth, which is in Mole-Man's realm and she plans to attack his kingdom in order to get it. As it turns out, its Kala who has kidnapped the Olympians as well, in the hopes that they too will fight as her champions. Eventually there is a giant battle between Mole-Man and Kala's forces. Realizing they're both decimating their own armies in this battle, Kala and Mole-Man team up to try and take over the surface world. Spider-Man battles the Hulk during this process and tries to snap the green goliath out from under Kala's spell. Spider-Man sends the Hulk off a cliff and finds himself snowballing (literally!) towards Mole-Man and Kala. The collision neutralizes the two villains as well as returning the Hulk to his (somewhat) normal psychology. The Olympians are returned to safely, and the Hulk disappears. Spider-Man bids the athletes farewell and goes off on is merry way as well. As an interesting side note, Spider-Man fashions web-skis from his webbing and uses them to attack the Hulk...it doesn't end well for the web-slinger.

Peter Parker makes a brief appearance at the conclusion of this story when he reads a Daily Bugle headline that states, "Spider-Woman a Criminal!" Peter Parker puts himself "in hock" to Barney Bushkin in order to get the publisher to send Peter to LA so he can investigate the reports of Spider-Woman's crime spree. Despite being rather cynical at the conclusion of Spider-Woman #28, Peter claims to having an open mind as to what is going on with his fellow Spider-hero. Whilst on board the plane en route to Los Angeles, Peter's plane is hijacked by none other than the Enforcer and Spider-Woman. Peter sneaks away and changes into his Spider-Man costume and confronts the two hijackers. Spider-Woman, currently being coerced by the Enforcer to aid him, is forced to fight Spider-Man. The web-slinger is shocked that Spider-Woman is attacking him, but he is unaware that the Enforcer has leverage on Spider-Woman in the form of an antidote he has for her sick friend Scotty McDowell. When Spider-Man tries to prevent their escape from the plane, Spider-Woman blasts him with her venom blast, sending the web-slinger crashing into the ocean below. Spider-Woman is frustrated that she couldn't tell Spider-Man the truth (in front of all the passengers) and she feels immense guilt after she's convinced she killed the web-slinger. But Spider-Man survives, he swims 11 miles to the shore. He then recalls that there was photographers onboard who were almost anticipating this event. He then uncovers that all of this was engineered by the Courier's owner, Rupert M. Dockery, in order drive up sales of his newspapers. Spidey uses that info to track down Spider-Woman and the Enforcer and he confronts the two of them. Spider-Woman explains how she's being extorted and the Enforcer ends up in police custody. However, Spider-Woman expresses anger to Spidey for getting the police involved and tells him, " Get out of here you...you wall-crawling fink! And leave me alone!" Spider-Man is upset that he tried to help her and yet she doesn't appreciate his effort. He heads back to New York nearly regretful that he did anything at all. An interesting side note, this is the second time that Peter was on a flight that was hijacked by a villain, causing him to change into his Spider-costume onboard the plane (the first time was in The Human Fly #1). However, this time he wisely trashes the passenger manifesto, so someone couldn't piece together him being Spider-Man by process of elimination. He didn't do that in the Human Fly #1.

"The Obligation!" This story is essentially a reprint of the Spider-Man Hulk Chicago Tribune Giveaway from 1980. The panels are redrawn (and slightly different) but the dialogue is basically identical. The title is also different, the Chicago Tribune Giveaway is called "What Price a Life?" The story revolves around an encounter between Spider-Man and the Hulk. After the green goliath reverts back to Banner, Peter Parker shows up to help the despondent scientist. Banner has no money, nothing to help him get out of town. Peter gives him his last $5 and says that a person once did that favor for him, so he wants to pay it forward. Banner graciously accepts the help. Later, when the Hulk is on a rampage, he finds a homeless person in need and gives him the $5. Interestingly, one difference between the two stories is that in the Chicago Tribune story, the homeless person is the same person that had given Peter Parker the $5 years back. The 'pay it forward' comes full circle in the Chicago Tribune story, but its not mentioned in the Marvel Team Up #126 story. As far as placement in the chronology, the MTU #126 story states that this instance takes place 'long before the events of Hulk #272', otherwise there is no other clear place to put this story, so this spot fits. This once again backs up the notion that this chronology list should include the appropriate promotional and giveaway comics.

When the villainous Leader contaminates the city's water supply with a 'Gamma Gene' that causes people who drink the water to turn green, a city-wide pandemic called the 'Green Flu' emerges. Peter Parker studies the 'Gamma Gene' and finds that it binds to healthy blood cells, but even he begins to feel sick whilst working. Soon after, he hears screams outside of his research lab at ESU, its the Hulk and he's terrorizing the campus. Peter changes into his Spider-Man costume and realizes that he could use a blood sample from the Hulk to help elucidate the Green Flu. His rationale is that the Hulk is a product of gamma radiation, so there may be a connection. Spider-Man confronts the Hulk, but his increasing symptoms due to the Green Flu cause the web-slinger to be no match for the Hulk. Eventually Spider-Man collapses while pursuing the Hulk, his skin has turned green. It insinuated that a bystander takes him to the hospital. Spider-Man is not seen again in the story but at the end of the story, the Leader reveals there's an antidote. The Avengers are able to get the antidote and its presumed they probably helped Spider-Man (and the rest of the city) recover from the Green Flu.

Spidey is not seen again in this story (or the flashback). The flashback takes place "ten years ago" and it was published around the time of Amazing Spider-Man #530. After J. Jameson decides to send Peter because he's been to the Savage Land before (in Amazing Spider-Man #103-104), nevertheless Peter is reluctant to go. Peter convinces Jameson to increase the monetary incentive for the trip, Jameson, of course, reluctantly complies. Soon after, Peter, Warren and Tanya are en route to the Savage Land. Whilst flying over the Savage Land in a helicopter, they're attacked by a pterosaur, causing the helicopter to crash. They all survive the crash, and Peter is even able to preserve his secret super hero identity (they think he had a real parachute, not one made from his web-shooters). The group is then attacked by a horde of savages, causing them to be separated. Interestingly, Peter even pushes Tanya into a river (safely) in order to prevent her from seeing him change into his Spider-Man costume. After sparing Tanya, Spidey is not so-lucky and he's captured by the savages and taken prisoner. Worthington suffers the same fate and is captured as well. Spider-Man and Angel are taken to the Citadel, the former base of Magneto when he was last in the Savage Land. One of Magneto's creations, the Brain-Child and his cohorts Blind Gaza, Barbarus, Amphibus and Vertigo flank Brain-Child and look upon the bound heroes. Brain-Child tells Spider-Man and Angel that he's going to use Magneto's Genetic Transformer to devolve them into their primordial form. When Tanya, Spider-Man and Angel had gotten separated back in Marvel Fanfare #1, Tanya ended up being saved by the Savage Land's hero Ka-Zar. However, after Ka-Zar takes her to his camp, they are attacked by the Brain-Child's horde...which now includes a mutated Spider-Man who now resembles a monstrous spider! The horde does not defeat Ka-Zar, but they are able to abduct Tanya and take her back to their Citadel base. Ka-Zar, Lykos and others storm the Citadel and battle Brain-Child and his monster army. When the Man-Spider (aka Monster Spider-Man) has the opportunity to kill Ka-Zar, Peter's psychology is able to penetrate and prevent him from doing so. The Man-Spider even tells Ka-Zar to kill him, if there's no hope of curing him. Soon after, Lykos realizes he can use his ability to drain energy from people could allow him to drain the monster-essences away from Spider-Man and Angel. Indeed he is able to cure the two heroes, unfortunately for Lykos is triggers his conversion to Sauron! The heroes are able to defeat Brain-Child and his minions, and 'days later' they begin their return to the United States. Tanya stays behind in the Savage Land to help Sauron find his way back to being Lykos. Interestingly, many (including Angel, who underwent his own transformation) witnessed the Man-Spider/Spider-Man revert to Peter Parker. Later, Spider-Man, alongside his fellow heroes, stands by Mar-Vell's bedside as he passes away.

When Peter Parker witnesses the mugging of an "artist [he'd] met at JJJ's party", he's astonished to witness this artist single-handedly defeat the three muggers. Peter snaps photos of the incident considering that Jameson loves these "ordinary citizen" stories. However, the artist asks for the Peter's film, saying he doesn't want the publicity. Soon after, as Spider-Man, he witnesses the same artist being unwillingly teleported somewhere, which sets off his Spider-sense. Spidey was able to slap a Spider-tracer on this artist, but when he goes to investigate the scene of the crime he's attacked by two yellow uniform-clad goons. Spidey quickly disposes of the two goons and uncovers a holographic wall they traveled through. When the web-slinger goes through the hologram he finds Nick Fury on the other side. In turns out those yellow-clad goons were SHIELD agents and that Spidey had stumbled into one of Fury's secret headquarters. The SHIELD director informs Spidey that that "struggling artist" was Captain America, and that they need to find him quickly (interestingly, despite seeing Cap in his civies, Nick Fury does not give Spidey Cap's civilian name, so his anonymity is preserved). Fury goes on to say that Cap was abducted by the Sultan, a former weapons/computer expert from SHIELD who had gone crazy is now hell-bent on world destruction. Whilst trying to save Captain America, Spider-Man and Nick Fury end up captives of the Sultan as well. Spidey and Cap attempt to escape and almost successful in doing so, however they soon realize that the villain's HQ (Thunderhead Island) is launching like a rocket into space. The web-slinger and the star-spangled Avenger soon find themselves falling to ground from thousands of feet above the Earth's surface!!

Spidey is able to save himself and Cap by shooting a web-line back up to accelerating Thunderhead Island rocket and also a web-line back down to Cap. But the Sultan sends his robotic army (with jet-packs) outside to kill the two heroes. Cap defeats the henchmen (he swipes one of their jet-packs) and then saves Spidey. The two heroes then confront the Sultan inside Thunderhead Island. After a rather simple fall seemingly kills the Sultan, the heroes discover that he can send his consciousness a mobile microchip into anyone of his robotic goons. With some help from Nick Fury, Spidey and Cap defeat the new Sultan and prevent his microchip from escaping into another robot. The heroes walk off having save the world from a potential nuclear holocaust. Interestingly, there's a rather comical scene where Spidey tries to use one of the robot's guns against them, but he can't figure out how to get the gun to fire. He then tosses the gun aside and says, "who needs a gimmicky gun that doesn't work...when I've got my trusty web-shooters!" I couldn't agree more Spidey, I couldn't agree more...

Terrax's gambit was to force the Fantastic Four to defeat Galactus (as they had in the past), his former master, otherwise he will destroy Manhattan by crashing it into Galactus' ship. Spider-Man, along with many other heroes, is along for the ride as Manhattan goes cruising through space.

[Pg. 2 panel 3] This single panel flashback is narrated by an avid collector of Spider-Man newsclips, photos and video footage, named Ray Hastings. In this single panel, Spider-Man is shown (through old video footage) struggling to grab on to Galactus' foot. Hastings describes this as the first encounter between Spider-Man and Galactus. It would make sense to place this panel in between the events of Fantastic Four #242 and #243 when Spidey, along with rest of the inhabitants of Manhattan, are traveling through space and about to be confronted by Galactus. There is one bit of discontinuity here though, in Fantastic Four #243, when Spidey arrives on the scene and asks Daredevil if it is time for them to intervene. Daredevil tells Spidey that they are too outmatched for this battle and should stay on the sidelines (and let the Fantastic Four and the Avengers handle it). The presumption in FF#243 is that Spidey listened and did not get involved. The web-slinger even says, "...the most we can do now is watch and wait." However, one way to sneak this into continuity would be to suggest that on his way to meeting/talking with Daredevil, Spidey tried to stop Galactus by grabbing on to his foot, but failing to do so. And that that is where is this video footage was taken. He then heads up to DD and decides that he should not try to fight Galactus any further he is hopelessly outgunned.

Spider-Man, along with rest of the inhabitants of Manhattan, are traveling through space and about to be confronted by Galactus. Whilst the Avengers and the Fantastic Four are taking the fight to Galactus, Spider-Man joins Daredevil and asks his fellow super hero if it is time for them to join the fight. Daredevil tells Spidey that they are "small-time super folk compared to what's being unleashed down there. We'd just be in the way." DD basically suggests that they should stay on the sidelines (and let the Fantastic Four and the Avengers handle it). Spidey appears to heed that warning and not get involved. The web-slinger even says, "...the most we can do now is watch and wait." Spider-Man is not seen again in this story.

After the death of Defenders Nighthawk and Valkyrie, Spider-Man joins a group of fellow super heroes who come to support the Defenders for their recent loss. Soon after, Hellcat claims to see a ghost of Valkyrie and sure enough, whilst all the heroes are gather at the Defenders HQ, a ghost of Valkyrie appears before all of them. So Dr. Strange holds a seance, and Spider-Man, alongside other heroes like Beast, Hulk and Namor, participates in the seance. Valkyrie then appears and says that she is not dead, but rather her spirit was cast into a state of limbo. As Valkyrie's sword, Dragonfang, hovers above the seance table, the Enchantress suddenly takes form and appears before the group of heroes! Note* Spider-Man references the events of Marvel Team Up #116, so this story must take place after that one.

The Enchantress explains that she wants the Defenders to obtain the Rose of Purity from the world known as Niffleheim, and give it to her. The Enchantress with then free Valkyrie. The group of heroes splits up, as Spider-Man goes with Dr. Strange, Gargoyle and the Beast to find Valkyrie's corporal form. Meanwhile, Hellcat, the Hulk, Namor and Damion Son of Satan go to get the rose. Suddenly, Valkyrie's body comes alive as the heroine claims, "after more years that can be counted--Brunnhilde hath returned to her rightful body!" She's now ready to exact her vengeance up the Enchantress. *Note, Spider-Man references the events of Marvel Team Up #117, so this story must take place after those events.

As the newly awakened Valkyrie battles the Enchantress, Spider-Man and his fellow heroes Beast, Gargoyle and Dr. Strange battle the evil harpies (basically crazy looking monsters) that Enchantress unleashed upon them. Eventually Valkyrie traps the Enchantress' soul in the crystal called the Globe of Souls (similarly to how the Enchantress had done to her a millennium ago). With the Enchantress defeated, Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, Beast and Gargoyle take the Rainbow Bridge back to Earth from Asgard. The heroes then gather for a quick cup of coffee back at the Defenders HQ, soon after Spider-Man and Gargoyle leave together, both vowing to try and digest all the weird stuff they'd been through. Spider-Man's exit with Gargoyle leads right into Marvel Team Up #119 from an editor's note. Also note, Spider-Man references the events of Marvel Team Up #112 as having occurred a "a few weeks ago."

When the Avengers decide that their team of super heroes needs new blood, Thor, inspired by Spider-Man's face on the cover of Time Magazine (with the question "Friend or Menace?") decides he'll inquire about the web-head's interest in joining. Later, when Spidey is about to stop a mugging in Central Park, the God of Thunder arrives (to help) but inadvertently takes out Spider-Man as well as the thugs. Spidey, now soaked from the deluge of rain that Thor brought down, leaves with Thor to see what the big guy wants. Thor asks him to join the Avengers, but Spider-Man refers to the time they asked him that same question in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3 and says he's not much of a "joiner" but he'll think about it. Spider-Man then swings off, he's not seen again in the story.

[Pg. 5] This flashback sequence is from one of the workers in that office building named William Nguyen. Due to the destruction caused by Juggernaut, the firm had to downsize, costing William his job and sending his life spiraling downward and out of control (to the point he considers suicide). His grudge against Juggernaut is the featured story in ASM 629. *Note MCP had this flashback much later in Spider-Man's chronology but this flashback is a clear homage to that scene in ASM 229. However, the two do not stop and they appear preoccupied because they never even seen Spidey (or hear him yelling)! When Peter Parker takes Debra Whitman on a date to the Annual Central Park Renaissance Fair, they see Ben Grimm arrive as well on a date with Alicia Masters. Grimm draws a crowd and as the commotion of his arrival takes center stage, a mystical sorcerer from another world (named Sardeth) possess one of the folks dressed up a magician at the Renaissance Fair. Soon after, all hell breaks loose as Sardeth makes a maypole come alive as a monster with tentacles. Grimm helps to diffuse the situation (by ripping down the maypole), as Peter realizes he must change into his Spider-Man costume. Deb and Alicia take cover together and Spidey joins Grimm in the battle. Sardeth converts one of the costumed-knights into a true monstrous knight. Spidey confronts this new knight head-on. Ultimately it takes help from Grimm to defeat the knight, and soon after Sardeth escapes to the streets of New York City. There Sardeth summons a giant green monster, which Grimm fights as Spidey continues to chase Sardeth. Eventually Spider-Man knocks Sardeth into the arms of Grimm, who threatens to squeeze the magician to death if he doesn't release control of the innocent Renaissance-party goer. Sardeth complies and returns to his home world, everything returns to normal...except for the now defeated-giant green monster in the New York streets. As the story ends, Grimm and Spidey joke that maybe the Central Park Zoo would like the monster as a donation.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance after the U-Foes broadcast their capture of Bruce Banner and thus the defeat of the Hulk! Spidey makes a single panel appearance, depicted from outside J. While web-slinging through the city on patrol, Spider-Man comes across a giant blue tube that appears to run over various building tops. It does not set off his Spider-sense but he decides to follow it anyway. Soon enough, Spidey realizes its the stretched body of Mr. Fantastic. Reed is barely conscious when Spidey arrives, but he tells the web-slinger that they were attacked by the Gladiator who believed the FF to be skrulls. Spidey then takes Reed back to the Baxter Building (interestingly, this panel was a homage to Amazing Fantasy #15, with Spidey now holding Reed in his arms). Once he leaves Reed with Sue and Franklin at the Baxter Building, Spidey takes off looking for the Gladiator (interestingly, Franklin calls him Spidey-Man and then Spider-Man references the Electric Company using his name). Spider-Man locates the Gladiator and even rescues the Nightcrawler from potentially being killed by the villain. But the X-Man seems like he's mind-controlled because he does not thank Spider-Man, he attacks him! As Nightcrawler is about sink his fangs into Spidey, Captain America's shield swings through, knocking Nightcrawler to the ground. Colossus then attacks Cap, just as Spidey is returning to consciousness. The web-slinger is totally confused as to what is going on. Spidey then tails Angel (who just appeared on the scene) in hopes to get some answers. It turns out that all the X-Men were skrulls, and the FF (with a little help from Spidey) are able to defeat all the Skrull-X-Men. Gladiator leaves on peaceful terms.

After his beat-down by the Champion (in Marvel Two-in-One Annual #7), Ben Grimm finds himself in a hospital bed recovering. Spider-Man makes an appearance when he attempts to cheer up the Thing by bringing flowers to him in the hospital. En route to the hospital, Spider-Man confronts the Mecho-Marauder (aka Fabian Stankowicz). Spidey quickly disposes his mechanical foe and makes his way to Grimm's hospital room. However, he doesn't stay long because he gets screamed at by the nurse who says nobody without a visiting pass can stay. Spidey soon leaves, but not before giving Grimm his flowers (how nice!). Numerous other villains emerge and each a stopped by a different super hero. As the story concludes, multiple villains (including MODOK, Mirage, Constrictor and others) and a giant battle breaks out with all the super heroes. PPSSM #74 leads directly into PPSSM #75 (the Black Cat makes her return in the final panels of PPSSM #74, which continues in PPSSM #75). So its understood why they wanted those two issues consecutive. PPSSM #74 also depicts the departure of Debra Whitman from the Spider-titles for the time being (she leaves on a bus). It's at that point, queued by the panel label "Later..." in PPSSM #74, that ASM #238 is squeezed in. However, there is no reference to Debra Whitman in ASM #238 and thus no obvious reason to squeeze that in before she leaves. Also, the sub-plot of ASM #238 is that Aunt May's halfway house for the elderly is about to be started (she signing the forms), and there is no mention of the status of the halfway house in PPSSM #74, so there is no violation there as well. The simplest way to handle this is to simply move ASM #238 before the events of PPSSM #74.

After seeking revenge for the events of Marvel Team Up #21, Xandu sets his sights once again on the wall-crawler. But first, the nefarious sorcerer swaps the Scarlet Witch's body and soul with his lost lover Melinda. Soon after, Spider-Man is swinging through the city when he sees the 'Scarlet Witch', after offering a friendly greeting Spidey soon realizes something is wrong with the former Avenger. The Scarlet Witch then blasts Spidey into another dimension. There he comes across the real Scarlet Witch, the only problem is that she is now in the body of Melinda! After convincing Wanda that she is indeed inhabiting the wrong body, Xandu appears and explains his plot. Basically he needed a soul to occupy Melinda's body (preferably one that can withstand magic, thus Wanda), so that he could finally be rejoined with his lost love. Xandu also maintained control of Wanda's original body, and thus her mutant powers. Xandu then unleashes a horde of monsters to kill Spidey (thus exacting his revenge on the wall-crawler, again, part of the plan). Spider-Man is able to defeat the monsters but then is confronted by the soul-less body of the Scarlet Witch. She is able to defeat the web-slinger and bring his unconscious body to Xandu for him to destroy. However, Wanda (in Melinda's body) is able to trigger the proper return of both souls to their original bodies. In her true form, Melinda pleads with Xandu to stop this madness and join her in the afterworld. The distraction is all Spidey needs to wake and clock Xandu, allowing for everything to escape the Death Dimension. All three (Wanda, Melinda, and Spidey) are safe and sound back in New York City, whilst Xandu's soul replaces Melinda's in the Death Dimension. This story is later followed up in the Spider-Man one-shot "Way to Dusty Death."

After a tussle between Kraven, Ka-Zar and Shanna goes haywire, Spider-Man arrives in the nick of time to cast a web-net and catch all three of them as they're plummeting from atop a building to the ground below. The web-slinger soon realizes that Ka-Zar is in bad shape, and he even calls a truce with his long-time foe Kraven, so that they both can help Ka-Zar to survive. Spidey and Kraven leave Shanna with Ka-Zar after an ambulance (and the police!) arrive on the scene. However, in his civilian identity (ie, Peter Parker) he visits Shanna in the hospital to inquire about Ka-Zar (Peter tells Shanna he's an acquaintance of Spider-Man). Whilst Ka-Zar is treated by the doctors, Peter takes Shanna to lunch in the park (and even issues some pretty heavy-handed compliments to her that could be construed as coming on to her). Shanna then explains her history with Ka-Zar and how she fell in love with him. When Peter and Shanna return to the hospital they're shocked to hear the doctor say that Ka-Zar has died!

As arrangements for Ka-Zar's tombstone are made, Peter plays the role of support for Shanna. Back at her apartment, Shanna kisses Peter, and whilst Peter says he's been wanting to kiss her, he says that its clear that she's both distracted by and in love with Ka-Zar. Shanna has a fit of rage, mad that Ka-Zar has left her alone in this world, she then collapses to the ground as Peter comforts her. After Shanna calms down, the phone rings, and Peter answers it. When the person tells Peter that something has happened to Zabu, Shanna leaps from the bed and out of the door to save Zabu. It turns out that Zabu was simply in a cage (not dead) and Shanna then frees the beast from his cage. This lands her in Bellevue Hospital, but luckily for her, the web-slinger breaks in and removes her from the hospital. He then takes her back to her apartment, but she quickly changes into her Savage-land gear and leaves the apartment. Spidey had changed back into his civilian clothes (to return as Peter Parker), but he is not fast enough to prevent her from escaping. Shanna then makes her way to the apartment of Ramona and Dr. Courtland (the folks responsible for Ka-Zar's death). However, Shanna is shot by Dr. Courtland and seemingly killed!
239.850
Shanna was not killed by the gunshot, and Spider-Man joins her in Romana Courtland's apartment just as she slowly returning to consciousness. Spidey then picks her up and tells her he's going to bring her to Peter Parker's apartment to "fix [her] up." Soon after, at Peter's apartment, Shanna begins to return to 100% physically, but emotionally she is still very much scarred by the loss of Ka-Zar. Unbeknownst to her and Peter however, Ka-Zar is very much alive!
239.900
Shanna and Peter continue to spend time together, they even catch a movie. However, Shanna continues to behave distantly as her mind remains on the (supposed) loss of her lover Ka-Zar. With her thoughts still heavily on Ka-Zar, Shanna tells Peter she wants to go to the morgue so she can see him. They never open the drawer to see him in the morgue, and leave soon after once Shanna starts becoming overwhelmed by emotion. Shanna had spent the past week sleeping at Peter's apartment (he's on the couch, she takes the bed) and in the middle of the night Peter wakes up because he hears some commotion. Shanna had gone out the window and was standing on the ledge of the building. She appeared to be in some sort of trance, Peter catches her before she falls to her death. Peter realizes that something is really wrong with her (although he creepishly remarks on how beautiful she is, if only "she weren't out of her mind with grief!").
239.950
To help free Shanna's mind, Peter takes her to upstate New York where the fresh is plentiful. Whilst walking through the green scenery, Shanna and Peter realize that two different doctors worked on Ka-Zar when he died. Shanna is convinced foul play is afoot, the two rush back to the city. They race back to Memorial Hospital and go to the morgue, they both see Ka-Zar's dead body. But Shanna screams at the corpse, "Get up! Get Up!" Sensing Shanna has lost her mind, Peter slaps her across her face, then apologizes saying that he didn't mean to hurt her. Shanna then passes out. They're both unaware that AIM had altered a random person's body to look like Ka-Zar in the morgue. Two days later, in New York's Riverside Hospital, Peter stands vigilant next to Shanna, who's sleeping in hospital bed. The doctor tells Peter that Shanna is catatonic and that the only chance to save her is to completely erase all her memories of Ka-Zar. Peter, feeling a tremendous amount of guilt, agrees with the doctor. Later that evening, as Spider-Man, he returns to his apartment and he's soon joined by none other than Ka-Zar himself! Ka-Zar explains everything that happened with AIM but the two almost come to blows. The commotion causes one of Peter's neighbors to knock on his door and tell him to quiet down. Meanwhile, Ka-Zar finds the location of Shanna's hospital room (from a note in Peter's apartment) and he heads out after her. Peter is too late to stop him. The note, however, was outdated and when Spider-Man confronts Ka-Zar at the hospital the savage demands to know where she is. Spidey won't tell him because if Shanna sees him, it could destroy her extremely fragile mental state. Ka-Zar doesn't want to hear it, as the story ends Spidey and Ka-Zar are about to come to blows over it! *Note Ka-Zar confirms that he knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man from the events of Marvel Fanfare #2.

Ka-Zar continues to attack Spidey in the hospital room as the web-slinger dodges the savages blows. Spider-Man tries to get him to calm down, but it is to no avail. Spidey warns him that he may be a strong human, but he's no match for a super human. Interestingly, however, Ka-Zar lands a punch on Spidey that sends him flying. That actually allows Ka-Zar to cool off and the two discuss whats happened over the past few weeks. Spidey and Ka-Zar decide that they are going to take on AIM and save Shanna together, as friends. Eventually they make their way to the psychiatric ward where they confront the doctors who are about to clear out Shanna's memory. The doctors, clearly not ordinary doctors, put up a fight against Ka-Zar. They are unable to stop him though, as he is able to rescue Shanna. Spider-Man then helps Ka-Zar escape the hospital with Shanna. Spidey recommends that they get real medical attention in the city, to help them heal. After all, NYC has some of the best hospitals in the world. Ka-Zar will have none of it, he claims (and rightfully so) that civilization has brought him death, AIM, and tragedy. He'd rather die in the Savage Land than remain here in civilization. Spidey won't stand in the way, he wishes him luck and kisses Shanna goodbye on her forehead. Ka-Zar and Shanna then begin their return to the Savage Land.

Suddenly a priority alert for another threat (not in the mansion this time!) and the Avengers must assemble to go handle it, they tell Spidey he must leave. Spider-Man does leave, reluctantly, but then muses to himself outside the mansion that he could really use the money and respect that an Avengers membership would provide him. He's quit grad school and the Black Cat is in the hospital with medical bills because she helped him. As the Avengers depart in their Quinjet, Spidey hitches a ride by sticking to the bottom of aircraft. The Avengers head upstate to Project Pegasus Mt Athena installation, and they're surprised to find the web-slinger has tagged along (and they're not happy either!). As the Avengers inspect the facility, earthquakes abound and soon they find an explosion occurred in the Thermal Research Dome. Cap suggests that the Lava Men may be responsible for these tragedies, and before they know it, Spider-Man and the Avengers are under attack by a horde of Lava Men! Spidey fails to follow Cap's orders which allows the Lava Men to get the upper hand, meanwhile, Moonstone and Blackout are raiding the rest of the Project Pegasus facility. Eventually when the new Captain Marvel arrives (aka Monica Rambeau), she is able to stop the Lava Men's attack because they worship her as a god. But it's too late, Moonstone and Blackout's plan is revealed...they're there to free Electro and the Rhino who were held prisoner at the facility!

As Monica Rambeau calmly escorts the Lava Men back to safety, Spidey thinks to himself how fast (and crazy) things seem to move with the Avengers. Meanwhile, the villains Electro, Rhino, Moonstone and Blackout become aware that the Avengers are on site, and this causes some in-fighting amongst them as Rhino attacks Blackout (because he doesn't trust him). Meanwhile, after the Wasp gives Spidey a hard time for tagging along for their mission (and nearly jeopardizing it!), she tells him he could be an Avenger-in-training. At first Spidey disagrees with that status (like he had in Avengers #236) but then they explain that he needs to learn how to work as a teammate and they need to know the full extent of his powers. Spider-Man then accepts their offer. Once their return trip to the airpad goes south (they nearly crash in the vortex beam tube), the heroes are confronted by Moonstone (from a television monitor) who says they are now running the facility. Soon after, an all-out battle ensues between the Avengers and the four villains. Despite being to physically subdue the villains, the heroes discover that Moonstone had triggered a nuclear meltdown. Spidey, with his scientific background, is able to walk Captain Marvel through how to prevent the rods from going thermo-nuclear (she can handle them since radiation doesn't affect her, but she needed Spidey's help). Later, back at the Avengers Mansion, Cap reaches out to the National Security Council to get the 'okay' for Spidey to join the team. NSC member Sikorski says absolutely no way, they have a file on Spidey a yard long and they still don't know a thing about. The answer is no because Spider-Man is essentially a security risk. Spidey laments, they let Starfox in (who's from outer space) but not me! Spidey then leaves the Avengers Mansion, on good terms with the team, but says his Congressman is definitely going to hear about this!

This is a typical Deadpool story that involves timetravel, and, as usual, one in which he goes back and mucks with the timeline. It is because of that that one should exercise caution when considering this story as part of Peter Parker/Spider-Man 616 canon. The setting for this story is given as "a long time ago (at the end of the bronze age of comics)", so its placement at this point in the chronology can work. The main issue is that this off-beat story creates moments that are extraordinarily odd (even for a Spider-Man comic!). Peter has a relatively brief appearance, he's at the Daily Bugle and JJJ and Joe Robertson are kicking around ideas for stories. Peter brings up a potential story at Oscorp (which in and of itself is a discontinuity event, since the term Oscorp would not be used for many years and the official Marvel stance on that company name is that it occurred as a consolidation when Norman returns from Europe). Regardless, JJJ and the others ignore Peter so blatantly that he even tells them he is Spider-Man, but nobody listens. Peter leaves the Daily Bugle only to witness Flash illegally park. Then, Deadpool arrives out of thin air, pushes Peter aside and steals Flash's car. Peter doesn't do anything about it and as Flash complains, Peter has a sudden recollection of his fateful inaction back in Amazing Fantasy #15 to which he responds, "Oh, no...it's happening again!" Peter is not seen again in the story.

Peter Parker is late to a meeting with J. Jonah Jameson and politician Councilman Wade in south Bronx. Peter is late because he's feeling sick with flu-like symptoms. Councilman Wade explains to Peter and Jameson that he wants to tear down these ratty old neighborhoods, kick the people out, and build new. Jameson resists because he grew up there. Meanwhile, Bruce Banner, who is working with Nick Fury and SHIELD, is on a space ship in orbit around Earth. Since Banner can control his conversion to the Hulk, he's useful in space. Unfortunately an unknown alien organism attaches itself to the Hulk. At first, he's comatose but then he soon emerges into a fit of uncontrollable rage. The SHIELD agents, to protect themselves in space, send the enraged Hulk down to Earth. He, of course, lands in the south Bronx. Peter, still feeling very unwell, converts over to his Spider-Man costume and begins saving innocent civilians (even the guys who had just tried to mug Peter Parker). Between saving innocent bystanders and confronting the Hulk, Spidey has hands full. But Peter catches a bit of luck, his flu is contagious enough to get the Hulk to start feeling sick. And in a very War of the Worlds-esque moment, the flu-causing bacteria kills is the alien organism that is affecting the Hulk. The south Bronx however, is nearly destroyed by the Hulk's rampage, the same area that Councilman Wade wanted to tear down. Fortunately though, the polls show Councilman Wade has no chance of being elected. *Note, there is no specific editorial note in this story that states when it takes place. However, Spider-Man does reference the Hulk's recent presidential pardon (from Incredible Hulk #278), which could explain why this issue of Marvel Fanfare was moved so far back in the chronology. There is no obvious discontinuity with moving it back to this spot, so placing it here can work.

Spider-Man makes a brief single panel cameo swinging passed the Baxter Building when Anya Corazon and her father Gil visit the Fantastic Four at their headquarters. According to the story, this takes place "several years ago." The original MCP list placed this entry during the Hobgoblin fight with Spider-Man in Amazing Spider-Man #250, directly after the Sensational She-Hulk #29 entry. However, Spider-Man, in Spider-Girl Vol. 2 #1 story 2, is peacefully swinging passed the Baxter Building, he's not engaged in battle with the Hobgoblin, which would have to be the case for the original MCP listing. Simply moving this entry back, between stories, where its entirely possible that Spidey "several years ago" was peacefully passing the Baxter Building while young Anya was visiting.

When the nefarious Professor Sanderson from Columbia University decides to meddle with the life of She-Hulk, he plucks various super powered individuals from the timeline (ie, the past) and sends them to Jennifer. Spider-Man, in the midst of a battle with Hobgoblin, was one of those people. He blasts She-Hulk with webbing, then realizes she's not the Hobgoblin, then disappears as quickly as he arrives. This placement in chronology can work because 1) Spidey should recognize She-Hulk (he'd met her already) 2) He'd been battling the Hobgoblin at this point. *Note the original MCP list had the Sensational She-Hulk #30 listed prior to this entry with Spidey as "BTS". We are not including the "BTS" entries in this list, so it was removed. There's no reason to suggest Spider-Man has any more impact in Sensational She-Hulk #30 than he does in any other Marvel book.
