These are the Spider-Man Unified Reading Flow codes for the SMURF era beginning with 031.500.
This era begins when Peter Parker first attends Empire State University and meets Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn. This section features his on-again/off-again relationship with Gwen, as well as the death of her father George Stacy. This section ends with the death of Gwen Stacy at the hands of the Green Goblin.

[Pg. 9 panel 4 - End of page 20] Peter struggles to integrate in to the social network at ESU. Later, he battles the Master Planner's goons as Spider-Man.
|
032.500 |
[Pg. 1 - Page 17 panel 4] "Man On a Rampage!" Peter struggles with Betty and with the news that Aunt May has radioactivity detected in her blood (most likely from the transfusion of his blood). As Spider-Man, Peter reaches out to Dr. Connors for help. When the Master Planner's (aka Dr. Octopus) thugs steal the ISO-36 serum, Spider-Man races to get it back from them. Spider-Man attacks their underwater lair, and a battle breaks out between he and Dr. Octopus!
|
032.750 |
[Pg. 32 panels 4 - 5]
As Spider-Man and Doc Ock continue to battle it out, Octavius taunts Spider-Man telling him, "You haven't a chance against me!" Spider-Man then picks up a giant piece of debris and responds, "Wanna bet?" The story then returns immediately to Amazing Spider-Man #32.
|
033.000 |
[Pg. 17 panel 5 - End of page 20] The piece of debris thrown by Spider-Man hits a main support beam, causing the building to collapse and Spidey to be buried under a giant pile of rubble.

"The Final Chapter!"
|
033.600 |
Spider-Man teams up with the Fantastic Four when the Sub-Mariner launches an attack on Dr. Doom! The placement of this retconned story at this point in the chronology is based on four pieces of evidence. First, Johnny Storm references the FF team up with Daredevil against Dr. Doom in Fantastic Four #39, saying that this story takes place one month after that event. Second, Dorrie Evans and Johnny Storm are in the process of breaking up at this point, so it must take place after Fantastic Four #38. Third, Peter Parker is getting a lot grief from Gwen and the other students at ESU for being stuck up, which puts it after Amazing Spider-Man #34. Four, when Spider-Man approaches the Fantastic Four, he makes a flip remark about Sue Richards (basically asking if she's available). Johnny tells him that she's engaged, which places this story before Fantastic Four Annual #3. Of course, this creates a bit of discontinuity as well, since Spider-Man should certainly be aware that Sue and Reed are engaged, he stole a piece of cake from their party!
|
033.650 |
[Pg. 13 panel 3 - Pg. 14 panel 2]
*Note, in order to fit with other in-continuity stories, the wedding of Reed and Sue Richards has been placed during Peter's time in college.* As Reed and Sue Richard's wedding festivities begin, Dr. Doom unleashes his revenge on the Fantastic Four (and the rest of the Marvel Universe!) when he decides to use his High-Frequency Emotion Charger to rile up all the villains around the city. Two such villains, Mr. Hyde and Enchantress, cross paths with the Avenger Hawkeye. While Hawkeye is battling Mr. Hyde and the Enchantress, a safe is knocked down from atop a building and headed down directly to where Hawkeye is standing. Luckily, Spider-Man is nearby and sees the safe falling.
|
033.700 |
[Pg. 11 panels 4 - 5]
Spider-Man's webbing thwips-in with perfect timing to protect Hawkeye from the safe. A young boy named Mark, who was an innocent bystander, witnessed Spidey's arrival.
|
033.750 |
[Pg. 14 panels 3 - 5] As the webbing stops the safe from falling, Spider-Man tells Hawkeye that when they give out the medals, they should save one for "your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!" Hawkeye obliges then continues to fight Hyde and Enchantress as Spidey swings away.
|
033.800 |
[Pgs. 12 - 18] Spider-Man goes to investigate why the wall (and the safe!) came tumbling down toward Hawkeye. He finds the Grey Gargoyle, who had been chasing after young Mark, and he's able to easily subdue him. The photographer for the Daily Globe, Phil Sheldon, also witnesses Spider-Man defeat the Grey Gargoyle and he asks if he can interview the web-slinger. Spider-Man says that if Phil gets the boy home safe and sound, he'll look him up later after this giant battle is over.
|
033.850 |
[Pg. 15 - Page 17 panel 1]
As more villains join the fight, more heroes do as well leading to a giant battle of good versus evil playing out in the streets.
|
033.900 |
[Pg. 39] Spider-Man is seen among all the other super heroes battling against the onslaught of super villains!
|
033.950 |
[Pg. 17 panel 2 - End of page 19]
The Watcher pulls Mr. Fantastic from the melee.
|
034.000 |
[Pg. 42 panel 1] Spider-Man fights off a group of Hydra agents whilst Sue Richards calls out for Reed (who had just been plucked away by The Watcher).
|
034.050 |
[Pg. 20 - Page 21 panel 1]
Reed is awestruck by The Watcher's laboratory, he hopes to understand all the gadgets and technology therein.
|
034.100 |
[Pg. 42 panel 2 - Pg. 43 panel 2] Reed sees Spider-Man and the other heroes from The Watcher's laboratory, he realizes he must select a weapon from The Watcher as quickly as possible.
|
034.150 |
[Pg. 21 panel 2 - End of page 22]
Reed selects the Sub-Atronic Time Displacer from The Watcher's laboratory in order to combat the villains. Soon after, Reed Richards returns to Earth and uses the time displacer to return the villains to where they were before they attacked. With the heroes victorious, Reed and Sue are able to celebrate their wedding. Spider-Man does NOT attend the wedding ceremony.
|
034.500 |
[Pg. 1 - Page 6 panel 3] "The Thrill of the Hunt!". Kraven makes an appearance.
|
034.600 |
[Pg. 6 panel 7 - Pg. 8 panel 3]
During class at Empire State University, Harry Osborn gives Peter a hard time, trying to embarrass him in front of the other students. When their class is over, Peter calls out Harry for picking on him saying, "you've been on my case since practically the first day of class." Gwen tries to encourage Harry to be a better person. As far as placing this flashback, we know that Harry was giving Peter a hard time on the first and second day of classes at ESU (as seen in Amazing Spider-Man #31). From Peter's words and tone in this scene, its clear that Harry continued that verbal abuse for at least a week or so more. So this flashback is placed a short time after Amazing Spider-Man #31, but not too long after their first meeting. Thus, it fits best in the middle of Amazing Spider-Man #34, whilst Peter is once again in science class with Harry and Gwen.
|
034.700 |
[Pg. 6 panel 4 - End of page 18] Kraven impersonates Spider-Man out in public, which draws Spidey into conflict with the hunter. Spider-Man confronts Kraven on a rooftop and the two do battle.
|
034.705 |
[Pg. 3 panels 1 - 2]
The last two panels of this flashback recount the end of the battle between Spider-Man and Kraven in Amazing Spider-Man #34. These panels are essentially duplicates of the panels seen in ASM 34 (18:5 - 18:6). The only difference is the added bit of dialogue by Kraven in the Amazing Spider-Man #47 flashback where he says, "He beat me by a trick...only because I was careless!"
|
034.710 |
[Pgs. 19 - 20] Spider-Man returns home and Kraven informs the authorities that it was he who impersonated Spider-Man and harassed J. Jonah Jameson.
|
035.500 |
"The Molten Man Regrets...!"
|
036.000 |
[Pg. 10 panel 5]
During a flashback scene, Peter recalls a time when the students at ESU donated cell samples during Professor Warren's class. It's possible that event occurred around this time in Spider-Man's continuity.
|
036.250 |
[Pg. 10 panels 4 - 5]
Peter reads Professor Miles Warren's journal, and in this flashback sequence Professor Warren recalls both Peter and Gwen donating blood samples for their upcoming biology experiment. He watches as Gwen and Peter walk out of class together. Professor Warren describes that he almost professed his love for Gwen at that moment, but decided not to because she barely knew him at that point. He also notices her attention that she gives to Peter Parker, Professor Warren states that, "he can't stand to see them together."
|
036.500 |
[Pgs. 1 - 11] "When Falls the Meteor!" Once Norton Fester obtains enhanced powers from a meteor, he goes on a crime spree as the Looter. Meanwhile, Peter continues to struggle to integrate into the social circles at ESU. While at a space exhibit at a local museum, Peter crosses paths with the Looter as the villain tries to steal another meteor to ensure he keeps his newly found powers. Spider-Man and the Looter trade blows as the web-slinger tries to stop the Looter from escaping with the meteor.
|
036.750 |
[Pg. 8 panel 2 - End of page 12]
During Spider-Man's fight with the Looter at the space exhibit (which we learn in this story is actually the New York Science Museum), he's knocked directly into the ladies room at the museum. Unfortunately there's a young lady in there, a blogger named Vanna, who had already had a bad experience from an earlier run-in with Spider-Man (see SMURF code 020.690). Vanna viewed this second invasion of her privacy as non-coincidental, believing that Spider-Man was staging these fights to impress her. Spider-Man leaves the ladies room to continue his slug-fest with the Looter.
|
036.800 |
[Pgs. 12 - 20] The Looter is able to give Spidey the slip, but the villain leaves the museum empty handed. So, Spider-Man checks in on the museum night after night, waiting for the Looter to return. Eventually his patience pays off and he catches the Looter. This time the Looter is not able to escape and Spider-Man leaves the villain for the authorities.
|
036.900 |
Peter Parker pays a visit to J. Jonah Jameson at the Daily Bugle to sell him photos of a recent battle between Spider-Man and the Looter. Phil Sheldon is at the office at the time. Interestingly, Peter pitches the photos to J. Jonah by stating that they 'make Spider-Man look terrible!' That remark causes Phil Sheldon to leave in disgust as he comments on the lack of 'unbiased journalism' exhibited by the Daily Bugle staff.
|
037.500 |
"Once Upon a Time, There Was a Robot...!" First appearance of the Robot Master (Mendel Stromm) and first appearance of Norman Osborn.
|
037.650 |
When the Masked Marauder and his gang attack the World Motors Center, Spider-Man swiftly defeats them, leaving a handful of criminals for the authorities to arrest. Despite the Masked Marauder escaping, TV news broadcasts Spidey's heroic efforts. Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson and Karen Page watch the news and debate as to who is a more worthy hero, Spider-Man or Daredevil. Meanwhile, the Masked Marauder concocts a scheme to finally defeat Spider-Man, he forces his gang members to impersonate Daredevil and sends them out on the streets to cause trouble. That way Spider-Man would be preoccupied battling "Daredevil" and not the Marauder. The evil genius' plan works to some extent when Spider-Man finds himself attacked by a "Daredevil" that manages to escape the web-slinger. Meanwhile, Matt Murdock decides its time to don the Daredevil costume and go looking for the Marauder. When Spidey confronts the real Daredevil, he attacks in retaliation for impersonator's attack on him. The real Daredevil is confused and forced to defend himself. The slug-fest by the two heroes is caught by the police and becomes news. The Marauder realizes its time to make his move. Daredevil eventually bests Spidey and leaves him tied to a post atop a building. The Masked Marauder is able to steal the XB-390 Engine from the World Motors Center. The next day, the web-slinger goes searching for Daredevil throughout the city using his Spider-sense. He's eventually drawn to the offices of Murdock and Nelson, where he finds three people there talking. He deduces that Foggy Nelson is the Daredevil (since it can't be the woman or the blind man in the office), so Spider-Man crashes in through the window and threatens Foggy Nelson!
|
037.700 |
Spider-Man leaves Murdock's office, convinced that if Foggy is Daredevil he'll follow him out. Murdock then realizes how to trap the Marauder and leaves his office as the Daredevil. He pays a visit to J. Jonah Jameson and convinces the newsman to go on TV and say that Marauder (and Spidey as his accomplice) forgot to steal the formula for fueling, thus making the XB-390 steal worthless. Daredevil is convinced this will bring the Marauder out of hiding. It works as the villain watches Jameson on TV and realizes he must go back to finish the job. Spider-Man catches the news broadcast as well and soon he spots Daredevil en route to the World Motors Center. After the two trade blows for a second time, they spot the Marauder in a phoney World Motors blimp. Spider-Man single-handedly takes down the Marauder's whole crew but then is blinded by the villain's Opti-Blast. The Marauder tries the same thing on Daredevil but it has no effect on the blind hero (obviously)! Eventually the Daredevil subdues the Marauder and destroys his blimp just as the authorities arrive. The Marauder manages to escape by pretending to be a police officer and unfortunately for Spider-Man the authorities still believe he was in cahoots with the Masked Marauder. They give all the credit to Daredevil. Spider-Man and Daredevil do not reconvene, and Spider-Man leaves aware that the authorities conflate him with the Masked Marauder.

The day after the events of Amazing Spider-Man #39 and #40, Peter tries to check in on Harry on the campus of ESU. Peter wants to make sure that Harry's doing well, since the day before he seemed pretty sad (in Amazing Spider-Man #39). Harry uses the opportunity to make fun of Peter in front of all his other friends. A confused Peter Parker walks away with his tail between his legs. Later that day, Harry shows up at Peter's house and apologizes for being mean to him. Harry explains that he's been a fraud, acting certain ways in front of certain crowds, simply to curry favor. Peter accepts his apology and the two play basketball together.

New Warriors (Vol. 4) #3
[Pg. 20 panels 1 - 2]
Bev Sykes, a member of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s New Warriors Task Force, shares story about her father to her partner. She explains that her father was cop, Sam Sykes, and one day after his shift was over he walked Bev home from school. Apparently he spooked 'some guy robbing a liquor store', who shot her father in his shoulder. Just as the criminal was about to shoot Sam in his head, Spider-Man swooped in and saved the day. It's very difficult to place the exact timing of this story since there are so few clues, other than the fact that it was many years ago since Bev in now a grown woman. So placing this flashback just before Amazing Spider-Man #42 is as good a spot as any.
|
042.500 |
[Pg. 1 - Page 20 panel 1] "The Birth of a Super-Hero!" Spider-Man battles John Jameson, who had been exposed to space spores that gave him super strength. Peter also prepares to FINALLY meet Anna Watson's niece in person.

[Pg. 39 panels 1 - 3]
As Aunt May and Peter walk to Anna Watson's house, he explains to her that he doesn't need to meet any more women.
|
042.700 |
[Pg. 20 panels 2 - 4] Peter waits at Anna Watson's house for the arrival of her niece. Peter's thoughts are on Gwen while he waits. Suddenly the doorbell rings.
|

[Pg. 20 panels 5 - 6] Peter is in shock at MJ's beauty and she issues the now classic, "Face it, Tiger...You just hit the jackpot!"
|
043.500 |
[Pg. 1 - Page 6 panel 4] "Rhino on the Rampage!" When the news of the Rhino wreaking havoc throughout New York City interrupts the music program Peter and MJ are watching, MJ suggests they go downtown to watch the action unfold. When he arrives, Peter changes into his Spider-Man costume and prepares to battle the Rhino.
|
043.750 |
[Pgs. 6 - 10]
During a flashback sequence, P.I. Billy Fender recalls the first time he saw Spider-Man in person. It occurred when the Rhino was tearing through the city, smashing into cars and being chased by police. Spider-Man swooped in from high above and gave chase to the rampaging villain. It is clear that this is an early-ish Spider-Man appearance and an early Rhino appearance, otherwise it is difficult to know exactly where to put this flashback. It is entirely possible that this havoc-causing scene can be viewed as the instance from Amazing Spider-Man #43, just before Peter changed into Spider-Man whilst 'observing' the adventure on his date with MJ.
|
044.000 |
[Pg. 6 panel 5 - End of page 20] Conclusion to "Rhino on the Rampage!" Spider-Man manages to once again defeat the Rhino, leaving him for the authorities.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance in this story when he intervenes during a bank robbery. Two X-Men, Iceman and the Beast, witness the robbery when they're in public in their civilian identities. But by the time they're able to change into their X-Men costumes, Spider-Man had already nabbed the criminals (and taken photos!). Professor X telepathically connects to Hank and tells him to ask Spider-Man to join the X-Men. Hank complies and asks Spidey, and the web-slinger flat out refuses. He even makes a snarky comment about how he just went through this with the Avengers recently (referring to Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3). Spidey swings off and says he'll fill them in on the reasons why later. Spider-Man then thinks to himself that it would be great to team up with heroes that are close in age to him, but that fate has made him a loner. Interestingly, the Beast and Iceman wonder to themselves why Spider-Man was taking pictures of the criminals (apparently no one else in the crowd saw Spider-Man do that, except the two X-Men).

After the Stilt-Man is killed by the Punisher, a group of B-List villains gather to mourn the loss of one of their own. The Shocker recalls an early battle with Spider-Man, this scene depicts the Shocker attempting to blast Spidey so it's placed in the middle of the battle sequence of Amazing Spider-Man #46.
|
046.800 |
[Pgs. 15 - 20] Spider-Man defeats the Shocker, leaving him for the police.

While on campus at ESU, Peter has a moment of panic when both Gwen and Mary Jane are hot under the collar and headed his way. To avoid both the ladies, he jumps into the air conditioning ducts. MJ and Gwen end up coming face to face and after a brief exchange of snarky comments, the two have a brief discussion. Gwen is upset because someone stole her notes from Chem class and MJ's drama class has her rehearsing at the ESU theatre. While crawling through the vents Peter hears Susan Monaghan and Daisy Lynch, two supposedly terrible students, talking from within the chemistry lab. It becomes clear they were the ones who stole Gwen's notes. Peter knows that the mixture they're concocting will explode, but in his attempt to stop them he falls through the duct and onto a table (with a fishbowl)...when he stands up he's basically disguised as Mysterio! This scares the two girls from the lab, but their concoction comes to life (a slight tribute to the infamous Miller-Urey experiment)! Swapping over to his Spider-Man costume, Peter tosses the living green concoction into the centrifuge and webs the door of the centrifuge to the door of the lab to keep it secured. Unfortunately for Gwen, when she opens the lab door she's covered in goo from the exploded (former) living concoction! The introduction to this story says "Gwen Stacy repeatedly offered to help Peter Parker catch up on some college lab work...with little success until now." This could be a reference to the scene in Amazing Spider-Man #44 when Gwen offers to help Peter get caught up on what he missed in lab that day. Incidentally, that issue also depicts the first meeting of Gwen Stacy and MJ Watson. It's possible that early on in their relationship Gwen and MJ were somewhat aggressive and competitive with each other, so this could help fit this retconned story at some point not too long after Amazing Spider-Man #44.

Peter Parker, alongside MJ Watson, makes a brief appearance whilst attending the Metro and ESU football game. He appears to be at the game on assignment by the Daily Bugle (because he has his camera with him), but he also seems to have made that assignment into a date with MJ (since she is with him at the stadium). They both witness the sudden appearance of the Inhumans, Crystal and Lockjaw, who arrive without explanation on the 50 yard line of the football game!
|
047.250 |
While patrolling the city, Spider-Man begins suffering from unexplainable (and painful!) headaches. This attack on the wall-crawler was perpetrated by the the Sorcerer who decided he must kill Spider-Man (whom the Sorcerer admits he does not even know), simply to prove his new powers are 'eternally supreme.' The Sorcerer uses mind control to force a bed-ridden Peter Parker to fly to New Orleans in order to battle the Synthetic Man, a giant monster that the Sorcerer has waiting for him. Spider-Man is saved when the mailman's ringing of the Sorcerer's doorbell causes his Psycho-Intensifier (a device the Sorcerer wears on his head) to malfunction, seemingly killing the Sorcerer. With the Sorcerer out of commission, the Synthetic Man (who was under the control of the Sorcerer) sleepwalks out in to the sea, eliminating his threat to Spider-Man. This story has been placed between Amazing Spider-Man #46 and Amazing Spider-Man #47. This placement is a bit earlier than its original MCP placement, but the move is due to the fact that in this story Gwen Stacy's hair is depicted in her more 'original' style (ie, Ditko and her first appearance), where she has the 'widow's peak' look. In Amazing Spider-Man #48 Gwen Stacy changes her hair away from the widows peak to her more familiar/modern look (some would say to look more like MJ!). Thus, this story must take place before Amazing Spider-Man #48.

[Pgs. 1 - 15] While Daredevil patrols the city in search of Stilt-Man, he comes across Spider-Man who's just about to tussle with two car thieves. Daredevil swings in to help Spidey, but the wall-crawler is not very receptive to Daredevil's intervention. After a few snarky comments by Spider-Man, Daredevil asks him if he's seen Stilt-Man. Spidey replies, "No! Now get lost!" Apparently Spider-Man didn't want the public to think it took both Daredevil and Spider-Man to fight these thugs. Meanwhile, the Masked Marauder and Stilt-Man work together to defeat Daredevil. The two villains gas and abduct Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson and Karen Paige from their office and whisk them away in the Marauder's helicopter. In order to cover his alter ego, Matt tells Stilt-Man and the Marauder that his brother Mike Murdock is the Daredevil. Later, the Stilt-Man goes out looking for Mike Murdock and after an unsuccessful attempt to find this fictional Mike Murdock, Stilt-Man decides to draw him out by robbing jewelry store. Spider-Man catches the Stilt-Man mid-robbery and the two duke it out. Murdock attacks the Marauder in the helicopter, knocking the villain off-balance long enough for him to change into his Daredevil costume whilst swinging outside the flying helicopter!

[Pg. 10 panel 1]
After the Stilt-Man is killed by the Punisher, a group of B-List villains gather to mourn the loss of one of their own. In this scene the Masked Marauder shares a memory of the time when he battled the Daredevil in a helicopter and Spider-Man battled the Stilt-Man.
|
048.200 |
[Pgs. 16 - 20] After Karen Paige unmasks the Marauder, revealing him to be Frank Farnum, Daredevil knocks him from the helicopter 'killing' him. Meanwhile, the Stilt-Man gets the best of Spider-Man after he blasts him with a stun gas pellet. Stilt-Man escapes while Spidey recovers from the toxic gas. Soon after, a reporter approaches Spidey, but the web-head snarkily brushes him off. After dismissing the journalist, Spider-Man tells him to "give [Daredevil] my worst!" The web-slinger was not portrayed very favorably in this appearance. Ultimately the Daredevil defeats Stilt-Man as well, leaving him for the authorities.

Alongside many other heroes of the Marvel Universe, Spider-Man makes a very brief cameo in this story when The Supreme Hydra uses his universal communicator to reach the entire world simultaneously. The Supreme Hydra threatens to unleash billions of deadly germs upon Earth if the verdict in the trial against Laura Brown is against her. Nick Fury is ultimately captured trying to prevent the trial. Spider-Man is not seen again outside that brief cameo.

[Pg. 1 panel 2 - Pg. 3 panel 3]
During a flashback sequence in the American Son story arc, Harry and Peter are in college and have just returned home from a fight with some frat boys. Harry tells Peter that he picked the fight with Moose Stegner and the others because his father, Norman, had paid him a visit earlier that day. According to Harry, all Norman wanted to talk about was Peter Parker. This caused Harry to take his jealous anger about Peter out on the frat boy he punched. Harry says to Peter that he is the son Norman always wanted, and that he's the brother Harry always wanted. This touching scene ends with Peter and Harry agreeing to be brothers. There's no obvious timeframe for this story to take place, other than to say sometime during their college years, while Norman was still around. So placing it here is as good as any spot for it.
|
053.200 |
[Pgs. 4 - 7]
During a flashback sequence, Spider-Man recalls the first time he met the Sentry (aka Robert 'Bob' Reynolds). After a clash between Spider-Man and Doc Ock ends with the villain escaping, Spidey is confronted by the Sentry on a nearby rooftop. Sentry first criticizes Spidey for letting Ock escape but then tells Spider-Man that he does have potential as a hero. This scene is placed here for a few reasons. First, Doc Ock's escape from Spidey in this sequence fits well with Ock being at-large the next time we see him in Amazing Spider-Man #53. Also, the next time Spider-Man sees the Sentry it is 'months' later, and those panels are placed after Amazing Spider-Man #80 (SMURF Code 080.600). So it makes sense to place this flashback around that time.

When the mutant Banshee was searching the mountains of eastern Europe for the group known as Factor Three, he locates the evil group's sanctuary. After coming across a mechanical spider that guarded the entrance of the sanctuary, Banshee is nearly killed, but he still managed to send a message over to the X-Men about the base and to 'beware the spider'. Meanwhile, Peter Parker decides to escape the city to relax, so he heads to a rural area in Westchester County. When he arrives, Peter sees an apparent UFO, which leaves behind a giant mechanical spider (its the Factor Three making an offensive move against the X-Men). Peter changes in to his Spider-Man costume and defeats the mechanical spider. The X-Men receive warnings that there are mutants on their premises so they go out to investigate. They find Spider-Man and since Banshee had warned them to 'beware the spider', they're convinced Banshee was talking about Spider-Man. When the X-Men try to capture Spider-Man, the wall-crawler easily evades all of their attacks. Eventually things settle a bit and the X-Men ask Spider-Man about his connection to Factor Three, Spidey admits he has no idea what they are talking about. This time the X-Men are able to subdue Spidey, sending him crashing into a river. However, Marvel Girl warns the group that the presence of the evil mutant is no longer detected (which exonerates Spidey obviously because he was still on the premises). The X-Men leave Spidey sogging wet and alone as they head back to the quarters in a Rolls-Royce. There appears to be no love lost between Spider-Man and the X-Men as they part ways. At the beginning of this story Peter Parker references a recent battle with the Kingpin, placing this story shortly after the events of Amazing Spider-Man #51.

[Pg. 8 panel 4 - Pg. 9 panel 4]
During a flashback sequence, Spider-Man recalls the first time he met the Sentry (aka Robert 'Bob' Reynolds). This sequence takes place a day or so after they first met (SMURF code 053.200) and it depicts some of Peter's peers discussing how much they love the Sentry. Flash Thompson is there and gives Peter a little extra ribbing. Flash has returned from his military service around this time, so he would be around to give Peter a hard time on any topic. So it makes sense to place this flashback around that time.

Convinced the Daredevil is actually Dr. Doom, the Fantastic Four set their sights on defeating ol' Hornhead. However, the FF have been fooled because the Daredevil they're after is the real Daredevil. Spider-Man is drawn into the conflict when he sees Daredevil retrieving the Human Torch from a water tank atop a building. Daredevil explains the jam that he's in and Spidey offers his help. Knowing he needs more support, Spider-Man recruits Thor to help with Daredevil as well. The fighting breaks down to a series of one on ones, with Spider-Man battling the Human Torch, Thor battling the Thing and Daredevil fighting Mr. Fantastic. The Fantastic Four pretty much lose across the board in the fisticuffs, but the drama is pretty much settled when the real Doom is spotted on TV in Latveria, clearing Daredevil's name. The six heroes end up on good terms with each other. This story takes place after Thor #150, where the God of Thunder battled the Wrecker. It's also a relatively brief battle so it could certainly happen in one of the day-breaks in the middle of Amazing Spider-Man #59.

After the Stilt-Man is killed by the Punisher, a group of B-List villains gather to mourn the loss of one of their own. In this scene the villains reminisce about 'back in the day' times that were more sweet and light (when compared to current times). In this scene, Spider-Man and Daredevil are teaming up to battle Stilt-Man who just pulled a bank heist. There's no obvious place to put this single panel flashback, but it would make sense that it occurs after Daredevil #27, since Stilt-Man had gotten the best of Spider-Man in that story. Otherwise, other than the fact that it takes place 'back in the day' there's no way to know exactly where this should go, so this spot is as good as any.

Shortly after a new hero named Yellowjacket arrives on the scene, Spider-Man makes a brief appearance tormenting J. Jonah Jameson. The Daily Bugle publisher was commenting on how he thought the Yellowjacket would mop the streets with Spider-Man, and the web-slinger couldn't miss an opportunity to razz Jameson. He makes himself a web-hammock outside the window of Jameson's office using a flagpole to hold himself in place, then he begins teasing Jameson. After a few snarky comments are exchanged, Spider-Man (presumably) takes off on his merry way leaving Jameson alone in his office.

During a flashback sequence, Spider-Man recalls an early encounter with the Sentry. Taking place 'months' after they first met (SMURF code 053.200), the Sentry surprises Peter at his home in Queens. "Stardust". Spider-Man and the X-Men battle the Blob and Kraven the Hunter. This story is placed here it features Flash Thompson and around this time he was once again home from his overseas service. "Catch You on the Flipside". Spider-Man and the Human Torch trade responsibilities, sending Spidey with the FF and the Torch to track down Kraven. Also, Kraven the Hunter was at large still after the last time we saw him X-Men and Spider-Man #1.

"The Guy Who Turns Into the Hulk". Spider-Man and Jean Grey are tasked with monitoring Bruce Banner and making sure he avoids turning into the Hulk. This story must take place after Spider-Man realizes that Bruce Banner is the Hulk, which occurs in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3. It must also take place after Spider-Man has built a relationship with the X-Men, as he does in X-Men and Spider-Man #1. The aspect of the story that is a little off is that Spider-Man and Marvel Girl are given this assignment. Its not clear at this point in Spider-Man's chronology that he has officially met Nick Fury. But since Fury is such a clever spy, its more than likely he's found ways to covertly reach out to Spider-Man. As a brief aside, its worth noting that the outcome of the Doc Ock vs. The Hulk is much different than when it occurs later in Spider-Man #19 (Revenge of the Sinister Six).

Flashback sequence (narrated by Ben Reilly!) that depicts one of Peter's memories when he was dating Gwen Stacy. Story features an attack by Kraven the Hunter on Harry Osborn. But the critical moment in this story is that this flashback depicts the moment Captain Stacy realized Peter Parker is Spider-Man! Story must take place 'weeks' after Captain Stacy and Joe Robertson began discussing Spider-Man (which first occurred in Amazing Spider-Man #66). Also, this time period must include Peter and Gwen happily dating. Also, when Captain Stacy dies, Peter remarks that "he must have always known!" It is difficult to say how true Peter's words are, but if we assume that he was aware for at least a few weeks, you have to place this flashback around Amazing Spider-Man #82. Last, the scenes of Norman Osborn have Green Goblin-like flashes can be attributed to his eventual succumbing to the persona around Amazing Spider-Man #96.

[Pg. 2 panels 2 - 4]
During a flashback sequence, MJ recalls a memory of when Peter and Gwen were still dating. This scene takes place at party where MJ expresses a bit of jealousy toward Gwen for the affection she's receiving from Peter. This sequence is placed between Amazing Spider-Man #82 and Amazing Spider-Man #83 for a few reasons. First, Flash is depicted in this scene, and he once again leaves for his military service during Amazing Spider-Man #83. Also, Gwen and Peter must be happily dating at this time. During MJ's memory, she describes the death of Captain Stacy being the next night. There's no way to fit that into the continuity appropriately. One explanation could be that MJ's memory was not exactly perfect on the timing of things and that the events leading to Captain Stacy's death may have been a few more days after that party.

Peter Parker makes a brief appearance at the Daily Bugle around the time Frank Castle's (the Punisher) family was murdered in Central Park. Peter pops in at the Daily Bugle to speak with Joe Robertson, unfortunately the editor was tied up with one of his reporters, Mike McTeer. McTeer is working the Frank Castle story. After talking with Betty Brant about Ned Leeds, Peter eventually crosses paths with McTeers. The slimy reporter asks to borrow one of Peter's cameras for this story, Peter obliges. In an attempt to spare Earth from a collision with a meteor, the Silver Surfer attempts to destroy the meteor before it crashes to Earth. After he blasts the meteor, a portion of the giant space rock hits the Surfer in his head, sending him plunging down to the Earth below. A wobbling disoriented Silver Surfer cruises on his board above the city streets and soon comes in contact with Spider-Man who accidentally attaches his web-line to the Silver Surfer's board. This causes Spidey to get dragged along by the Surfer. Spidey warns him that he's flying to high but the Silver Surfer doesn't listen, instead he believes Spidey is trying to trick him. In what amounts to be a tremendous amount of confusion and miscommunication, Spider-Man and the Silver Surfer continuously battle one another without understanding clearly why they're even fighting. Whilst Spider-Man doesn't understand the Surfer's actions, the Silver Surfer struggles to understand why Spidey responds to every 'challenge' with physical force. As the military gathers to address this threat, the Silver Surfer subdues Spidey, wrapping a car around him. When a young boy ends up trying to ride the Surfer's board, the Silver Surfer saves the boy while taking bullets from the military forces. Spider-Man witnesses Surfer's actions and realizes that he felt threatened by the Silver Surfer because he was stronger and because he was different. Spidey realizes that he treated the Surfer the way many people treat Spider-Man...a nice lesson learned for the wall-crawler.

Jameson sends Peter packing, the publisher tells that Spider-Man is stale news and that he should come back only when he has photos of the Black Widow. After the Beast and Reed Richards accidentally unleash two giant mutant-hunting Sentinels lose, Spider-Man joins the effort to defeat the giant machines. Peter's Spider-sense warned him of the Sentinels, so he quickly changed into his Spider-Man costume. Spidey soon joins the X-Men, Fantastic Four and other super heroes to battle the Sentinels. Spidey is the one the warns the group that the Sentinels are getting unstable and will explode soon! This allows Dr. Strange to form a force field around the heroes, leaving heroes victorious!

Spider-Man makes a brief cameo (a 'floating head' cameo to be specific) when Reed Richards uses the Cosmic Cube to undo the damage wrought by Dr. Doom. Richards uses the cube to repair the damage and cause the entire world to sleep. And when the world awakes, they'll have no recollection of those events. Thus Spider-Man, like the rest of the world, has no idea what happened with Doom and Richards that day. Note* Original MCP list had this listed as a BTS appearance, but Spider-Man's head is shown as one the people affected by this story. Since he's depicted within the story, we're including this appearance in the list.

During a flashback sequence, Peter hears that Dr. Octopus is on the loose. Spidey will confront Ock two more times in this Death of Captain Stacy arc, but in neither case is he warned of Ock's presence by the radio (he's warned once from Joe Robertson, the other using his Spider-Tracer). So this is the best place to put that flashback sequence. One could imagine that if Ock's tentacles were rampaging through the city, the radio may still proclaim "Dr. Octopus is on the loose!"
|

After re-loading his web cartridges and deciding that the element of surprise will help him in his battle with Ock, Spidey take off through the city to go looking for him. Not long after Captain America and the Falcon returned to the surface after a confrontation with Mole Man, the two heroes part ways. When the Falcon returns home, he decides to prove to himself that he doesn't need Cap in order to be hero. So he decides to go out and patrol the city on his own. Just after leaving his apartment he spots Spider-Man swinging through the city and rationalizes that Spider-Man is way out of his territory, so he decides to track him. The Falcon then sees the police tailing Spidey and he concludes he must be a wanted criminal. Spider-Man is too fast for him though, so the Falcon leaves Redwing (his falcon companion) to continue following the speedy web-slinger. Soon after, Spider-Man returns to his apartment but then quickly leaves, telling his roommate, Harry Osborn, that he's going out for a newspaper. Just after Peter leaves, the Falcon comes crashing through their apartment window and abducts Harry, because he's convinced Harry is Spidey (since Redwing had led him to that apartment). Peter witnesses the abduction quickly confronts the Falcon as Spider-Man. The web-slinger gives him one serious beating, allowing Harry to escape. Spidey then leaves the Falcon, but not without placing a Spider-Tracer on him so he could find him later. The story ends with the villain Stone Face teeing up his revenge on the Falcon and Cap!
|
094.800 |
Stone Face comes through on his pledge and abducts the Falcon after first hitting the hero with his car. Spider-Man returns home to check on Harry, who is still pretty shook up after his run-in with the Falcon. Peter convinces him that the Falcon no longer thinks Harry is the web-slinger because he fought the real Spider-Man in front of Harry. Therefore, Harry is safe. Peter then dons his Spidey costume and goes out looking for the Falcon. Using his Spider-Tracer, Spidey tracks the Falcon down to Stone Face's hideout. After realizing that the Falcon is being held captive, Spider-Man sneaks into Stone Face's hideout and grabs the hero. Since the Falcon was still convinced Spidey is a criminal, he tries to fight the web-slinger. Captain America joins in on the squabble, and despite his history with Spider-Man, he attacks Spidey because he believed Spidey had attacked the Falcon. Ultimately Spider-Man convinces them that Stone Face is the real threat and the three heroes decide to band together to stop him. The trio raid Stone Face's hideout and hand him over to the authorities. Spidey leaves on good terms with Captain America and the Falcon, who now have a newfound appreciation for their own partnership.

As Spider-Man observes Daredevil swinging through the city, he laments how lucky Daredevil is, since the whole world seems to love and trust him as a hero. Spidey knows that same case does not exist for him and he ruminates further over the stress he faces with Gwen Stacy hating Spider-Man for what she thinks he did to her father. After returning to his apartment, Peter is visited by Mary Jane. As a side note, due to a coloring error Mary Jane's hair is depicted as blonde and Peter's hair looks black on this page. Peter is surprised to see MJ, however, with a giant crowd and growing commotion occurring outside his apartment, he's forced to turn her away and suggest they talk another time. It's not clear why MJ was there, but it could be related to the conversation she had with Gwen (see Amazing Spider-Man #365/3) and perhaps she wanted to talk with Peter about that. Regardless, MJ leaves and Spider-Man soon joins a fight between Daredevil and the Sub-Mariner (which is what was causing the commotion outside his apartment). The ruckus between Daredevil and Sub-Mariner appears to have started over another case of hero miscommunication and confusion. So, the web-slinger joins a fight in progress that had no real origin behind it, nevertheless, all three heroes engage in battle. Daredevil tells Spider-Man to leave, Spidey refuses, as the two seem to work in tandem to battle the Sub-Mariner. The heroes battle to a stalemate but suddenly a tear-drop shaped vessel opens near the combatants, and beautiful woman emerges. She tells the Sub-Mariner that she needs him to travel to a 'world within a world.' The story ends on a cliffhanger, unclear whether or not the heroes will follow this mysterious woman on her journey. There's an interesting dynamic developing between Spider-Man and Daredevil as the web-slinger appears to view Daredevil’s life as being much better than his. Meanwhile, the Daredevil has all sorts of personal problems on his own. The irony is that much later, in Daredevil #160, Matt Murdock will look outside his window and see Peter and MJ walking together, and he thinks that Peter has it all. It would appear that they're both suffering from a case of the 'grass is always greener.' This story in Daredevil also appears to be the first instance of a Spider-Man crossover that spans multiple titles. At the conclusion of this story, the reader is pointed to the upcoming issue of Sub-Mariner (i.e., Sub-Mariner #40).

Spider-Man and Sub-Mariner follow the mysterious woman on her journey. As the two heroes make amends, they both seemingly float through some weird realm as they travel alongside their female companion to their destination. The woman's name is revealed to be Lady Tuvia and she has requested that the Sub-Mariner fight as her champion against a man named Turalla, who threatens the survival of the people of the Black Sea. Spider-Man is baffled by these claims, yet the Sub-Mariner is well aware of the stories behind the Black Sea people. After Spider-Man tries to convince Sub-Mariner that they should leave, Namor explains to Spider-Man why he thinks he should stay and fight. Namor tells Spider-Man that a great injustice was once done to the people of the Black Sea and that he must help them, because his honor as an Atlantean is at stake. Inspired by Namor's honor-bound participation and a feeling of regret over the recent loss of Captain Stacy, Spider-Man decides to help in the battle against Turalla. Spider-Man and the Sub-Mariner battle the gargantuan Turalla, and are able to hold their own against him. However, when Turalla has Spidey in a death grip, Namor knocks the villain to the ground. When Turalla returns to his feet, he uses a mind-blast that knocks Spidey and Namor unconscious. Luckily for the two heroes, all the way back on Earth (Boston to be specific), Namor's father uses a mental energy projection and neutralizes Turalla. He had sensed the heroes' pending defeat if were to not intervene. Lady Tuvia pronounces Namor and Spider-Man victors in the combat, freeing the people of the Black Sea in the process! Tuvia then sends Namor and Spidey back home to New York City. Spider-Man and Namor part as close allies with a newfound respect for one another.

Gwen and Peter are happily together, once again, as Gwen appears to have processed her grief and forgiven Peter for his defense of Spider-Man in regards to her father's death. Her change of heart was largely driven by a conversation that she had with MJ. It's is very probable that her conversation with MJ occurred sometime between Amazing Spider-Man #98 and Amazing Spider-Man #99.

Peter Parker observes this and tells Jameson that he has to leave because he feels and thus cannot take photos of the Hulk's rampage. Obviously Jameson was none-too-pleased with the decision. Peter then changes into his Spider-Man costume and joins the Fantastic Four who are trying to corral the green behemoth. When Spidey swings into the fray, the Thing tells him to scram. Spidey's last words to his fellow hero is, "Have it your way big man...but remember I offered!" Spidey then swings off. Neither he nor Peter are seen again in this story. When Dr. Hank Pym begins studying 'American Indian' drugs, Peter Parker works alongside side him for some of the experiments. It is unclear how Pym and Parker were connected in this endeavor, but it is suggested that it is somehow related to Peter's work at Empire State University. Pym's first experiment fails miserably, after it explodes it nearly destroys Pym's entire lab. Pym tells Peter that he needs to be successful here because Dr. Curt Connors is expecting big things from this work. Soon after, an odd looking man arrives at the lab and tells Pym that he's kidnapped Connors' son and won't return him until Pym hands over his drug specimens. Peter and Hank go to Martha Connors to tell her about the danger her son is in (in this scene she refers to her son as 'Timmy'). Peter and Hank then decide they'll get her son back. They devise a plan to have Hank use his Ant-Man powers to defeat the thugs at the meet-up, but things go awry and the kidnappers raise the stakes on the two heroes. They tell Peter and Hank that they've injected the boy (who is now referred to as 'Bobby') with a toxin that will kill him soon, unless he has the antidote. But they will not give him the antidote until Pym gives them the drug specimens. Things get even more complicated when 'Bobby' escapes the kidnappers' custody, and they send Hank out to find him whilst making Peter their new hostage. They inject Peter and Hank with the toxin as well to ensure their cooperation. Pym soon tracks down the boy as Peter breaks away from captivity and switches to his Spider-Man costume. As Spider-Man, Peter quickly defeats the thugs but one of them runs off with the antidotes. Peter then removes his Spidey costume and pretends to be held captive again so that Pym does not realize that he is Spider-Man. Pym is able to stop the kidnapper who ran off with the antidote, allowing Peter, Pym and 'Bobby' to take the antidote. Peter then returns 'Bobby' to his mother. To be clear, Curt Connors' son is not named 'Timmy' or 'Bobby' it is Billy Connors!

Soon after (likely the next day or so), Peter is brought in to the police station for questioning around Gwen's death. Since Peter was Gwen's boyfriend, it was standard procedure to bring him in for questioning. Peter says that he doesn't have much of an alibi, but that he was on-assignment for the Daily Bugle at the time. The police let him go with no questions asked, they tell him to go home and get some sleep. The police officer on duty at the time of her death (the one who prevented his partner for shooting Spider-Man), tells Peter that it wasn't Spider-Man's fault for her death. He tells Peter that Spidey tried to save Gwen and that he took it personal when she died. Peter's spirits are somewhat lifted by the officer's words.
