These are the Spider-Man Unified Reading Flow codes for the SMURF era beginning with 252.110.
This era begins with Marvel's Secret War, which leads to Spider-Man's black costume. The section features the beginning of the "Web of Spider-Man" series and also features events like the death of Ned Leeds. This section ends just before Peter's marriage to Mary Jane.

"Where, Oh Where has my Spider-Man Gone...?" Black Cat searches for Spider-Man, she does not find him until the end of the story, outside his Aunt May's house in Forest Hills. Spider-Man is wearing his new black costume. Adjusting the placement of this issue with the original MCP list for multiple reasons. First, the conclusion of this story leads directly into the beginning of the next issue (Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #91), in which Spidey and Black Cat continue their discussion about why he's wearing a new costume. They ride the Long Island Express back to the city together in between those two stories (as reference by Spidey in PPSSM #91). Also, the events of PPSSM #91 take place over more than a day, which does not along it to fit in between Peter's return from Battleworld and the events of Marvel Team Up #141. A general set of events for Peter's return from Battleworld can be viewed as his re-appearance in the park with the other heroes (Doc Connor in tow), then returning Doc Connors to his family, then returning to his apartment and just missing the Black Cat who was there, then breaking up the argument btn the two New Yorkers (ASM #252), then some time after that returning to his Aunt's house in Forest Hills where he finds the Black Cat (PPSSM #90).

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance when the Hulk goes on a rampage through New York City. His rampage was partially antagonized when SHIELD fighter jets launched chemical fire (ie, napalm) attacks upon him, attempts to restrain the Hulk peacefully had failed. As the fires burned around the Hulk, he launches a water tower at the SHIELD jets, which knocks them from the sky. As the pilots fall unconscious toward Earth, Spider-Man shoots a giant web net to catch them. Unfortunately that net is not enough to keep them safe because the scalding hot water from the napalm-heated water tower also fell toward them. Spidey spins a web-cocoon to protect them from falling water. The Hulk ends up banished to the crossroad dimension, and Spider-Man is not seen again in this story.

In 1985, a young boy named Toby figures out how to travel from the real world (which he is from) to the Marvel Universe of 1985. He does so because Marvel super villains have made their way into the real world. In the Marvel World, Toby makes his way to the Daily Bugle because he knows he can find Peter Parker there. He tells Joe Robertson that he's Harry Osborn's little brother, when Robbie passes that info on to Peter, the web-slinger knows something is awry. Peter then meets the boy on the roof the Daily Bugle, and Toby immediately calls Peter's bluff, stating that he knows Peter is Spider-Man. Eventually Peter concedes the truth and the Toby jumps from the roof (its not clear whether he does so intentionally or if pigeons knock him from the roof). Either way, Spidey casts a gian web-net and saves him. Spider-Man then agrees to help the boy. The original MCP placement for this story was in between PPSSM #90 and PPSSM #91, which cannot work because those two stories are consecutive and #90 leads directly into #91. This placement in the chronology fits a bit better and still has all the key elements like: Spider-Man's in the black costume and he's dating Black Cat (which are both mentioned by Toby in the story). J. Jonah Jameson is still seen at Daily Bugle which can work because despite stepping down as Editor-in-Chief, he's still the Publisher (a point he makes when he's seen there in PPSSM #90).

As Spider-Man is swinging through the city, complaining about the life of a super hero, his Spider-sense alerts him to a danger that appears out of thin air. Indeed, a giant, armored, Spider-like monster appears before him and Spidey immediately takes an evasive action from its attack. It doesn't work though, the monster spews some sort of venom on to the web-slinger. But Spidey overcomes this attack and goes after the monster, spinning him into a web-cocoon. The monster counters, breaking from the webbing and knocking Spidey with a blow to the head. Spidey then swings down and kicks him in the head. Suddenly, with Spider-monster seemingly incapacitated, it disappears as quickly as it appeared. Spidey is not seen again in the story, so he's unaware of this, but the monster was actually a good guy...a warrior from a planet that was under attack. The Spider-monster is actually a fellow Pendragon! The opening of the story states these events took place in New York City, 1985.

The second story in the Venom Super Special contain an editor's note that states this story takes place during Amazing Spider-Man #256. While Peter is asleep, his black costume takes him (unwittingly) on an adventure in the city. Spider-Man (technically the symbiote) busts up a criminal ring that was being barricaded by police. This gets Spider-Man the appreciation of Captain Jean DeWolff. After which an awkward moment ensues when the symbiote/Spider-Man tries to kiss DeWolff. Jean plays it cool, and turns him away. She had said "I love you, Spider-Man", which triggered the symbiote (based off of Peter's memories) to kiss anyone who says, "I love you." The part ways and Jean says she'll beat the s^$% out of him if he tells anyone about this. Symbiote/Peter then return to Peter's apartment to sleep. This then continues right in to the second half of Amazing Spider-Man #256.

When Mysterio breaks out of jail and takes over the Daily Bugle, he challenges Spider-Man to battle him or he'll attack the staff at the Daily Bugle. Peter, who was already there handing photos to Joe Robertson, switches into his Spider-Man costume and takes on Mysterio. But a second Mysterio-like character arrives, although, unbeknownst to Peter, this second character has no connection to Mysterio. This second character, called the Chief Examiner, is there to study both Spidey and Mysterio and, ideally, duplicate/study their powers. Spider-Man battles Mysterio, whilst also coming into contact with the Chief Examiner who he thinks is also Mysterio (or at least one of his illusions). Eventually, to escape Mysterio's black holes, Spider-Man goes through a doorway brought about by the Chief Examiner that strips his "very essence, all that he knows--every experience, every thought, every sensation he has ever had..." This, ultimately gets fed into the computer game and the narration states that if you want to find out what happens, get the "Scott Adam's Questprobe Adventure Computer Game." This process drains Spidey, but luckily for him, the Chief Executive distracts Mysterio. Spidey is eventually able to defeat Mysterio, and the Chief Executive disappears. The goal of the Chief Executive was to get these powers to help him save his planet who is under attack by the Black Fleet. This book is essentially a promotional comic to promote the Questprobe computer game. But the story itself makes a serious effort to connect itself to Spider-Man comic canon (ie, the 616 Universe). Peter references the exact events that are occurring currently in his books and there's an editor's note referencing Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #94-96.

In Amazing Spider-Man #263, Peter and MJ visit Harry and Liz in the hospital soon after their son, Normie, is born. Peter is seen in that story walking in to the hospital (like a normal person would) to the visitor's center. In this flashback sequence in Peter Parker Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #25, Norman Osborn tells Peter that when he received the news of the birth of his grandson, he left Europe (where he was exiled at the time) and went to New York City (fully garbed as the Green Goblin no less!) with the intention of looking in on his grandson (and potentially spiriting him away if the mood struck!). To Norman's surprise, outside of Liz/Normie's window was Spider-Man looking in on them as well. Interestingly, that is when Norman realized that the true Goblin heir was Peter Parker! The way to make this fit into continuity is that in Amazing Spider-Man #263, the day after Peter and MJ visit, Spidey swings through the city after he checks in on Ollie Osnick. Peter was in such a good mood at that point that its entirely possible he popped in again on Osborns in the hospital. It would be at that point that Norman spots Peter.

"Jump For My Love Or Spring Is In The Air" Editor's note states that the events of the first four pages of the story takes place before Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #100 (because Spider-Man and Black Cat are together in that sequence and they break up in PPSSM #100). Spider-Man crosses paths with the Power Pack, a group of four super powered siblings who have a mission to save the world (given to them by the same alien who gave them their powers). After Spidey investigates damage left behind at a warehouse, Cloak and Dagger meet with him to share info. Soon after, Spidey is attacked by Dragon Man, who had abducted Gregson Gilbert (the professor who made the Dragon Man). When Dragon Man severs the web-line keeping Spidey in the air, the web-slinger plummets toward the ground. The Power Pack member named Gee saves him from falling by catching him mid-air. Realizing that they're children, Spidey is a little caught off-guard. When the dust settles, Spider-Man has a brief chat with Gee and his brother the Mass-Master. He refers to the events that led to the death of his Uncle Ben and warns them not to get into super heroics at their age. Spider-Man says he'll handle the Dragon Man situation. They then part ways. Spider-Man is not seen again in this story and the sisters of Gee and Mass-Master already got to Dragon Man! No obvious placement for this story in the chronology other than a newspaper reference to a Spider-Man/Hobgoblin battle and the fact that Spidey is wearing his blue and red costume. So this placement works.

When the Living Pharaoh absorbs the Fantastic Four's cosmic energy in order to become the Living Monolith, the remaining (non-cosmically altered) member She-Hulk goes looking for help. She turns to Cap, who recommends that they get a hero with a scientific background that has worked with the Fantastic Four and the Avengers. The computer at the Avengers HQ recommends Spider-Man, so Cap goes looking for Spidey at the Daily Bugle (by inquiring for Peter Parker first). Spidey then aids Cap and She-Hulk isolate the energy signature that has led to the FF being trapped by the Living Monolith, but before they could test it, the Avenger's security alarm goes off. The Living Monolith is now destroying New York City, Cap, She-Hulk and Spidey put their plans on hold to stop the enormous monster. But when their attempts are no match for the Monolith's great strength, Spidey goes back to his device and triggers the same teleportation that the Pharaoh had pulled on the FF. From there, Spidey helps to undermine the Monolith's power and free the Fantastic Four. Spidey then teams up with the FF and the Avengers to defeat the rest of the Pharaoh's army that teleported to New York with the Monolith was defeated. Spider-Man should be on the Avenger's radar in regards to his scientific acumen based off what he did for them back in Avengers #237.

While investigating the Corbett brothers, who were framing Spider-Man, the web-slinger comes across a scrap-book they made which tells their story. Spider-Man, during an attempt to thwart a robbery, had inadvertently led to the death of their father, Edward Corbett. This story is listed as a "FB-FB (flashback within a flashback)" because the contemporary narrative of the story involves Peter, who wasn't feeling well, reminiscing over a different time he didn't feel well (which revolves around the Corbett brothers story). Its not clear exactly when to place the death of Edward Corbett, but the news clippings from the Daily Bugle that Spidey finds are from "a few weeks back." So this placement could work.

The two are working on a story for the Daily Bugle, during their tour of the facility Peter witnesses Phil Carlisle tell the story of his runaway step-daughter Tandy Bowen (aka Dagger). Peter then goes out looking for Tandy to pass on the information that her step-dad is looking for her. After tracking Cloak and Dagger down, their reluctant to meet with her step-dad (apparently a reunion with Tandy's mom had recently gone awry). They claim that their mutant powers have made them no longer able to reintegrate back into society, their goal now is simply to protect the innocent. There's an interesting scene where Peter dance's with Tandy (he claims she probably wants to be back in high school) and then the two kiss right in front of Cloak! It doesn't help that earlier in the story Peter remarked to himself that Dagger is a knockout. Soon after, Cloak absorbs Spider-Man into his...cloak, to show him the darkness on the street and the world as they see it. Peter is taken back by the experience. They part ways, and, in order to shelter Cloak and Dagger from harm, Spider-Man follows up on a lead for a drug racket running in the city. Unfortunately, Cloak and Dagger did not want his help and Spidey's action actually mess up the longer-term goal of busting the more significant drug lord. When news reports state that Longshot is behind a recent diamond heist, Peter realizes that he may not get a day off as Spider-Man and that the web-slinger may have to go into Manhattan to find this guy. Longshot is convinced Spider-Man is a demon, although he recognizes Spider-Man's face from a kids Halloween mask he had seen earlier. Spidey is impressed with Longshot's speed and agility, he soon realizes that Longshot is not a villain, just a confused kid. In the end, Longshot agility and quickness are too much for Spidey, and he escapes, although the web-slinger chalks it up to Black Cat-like luck. Spider-Man is not seen again in the story.

While on a boat with Joy Mercado traveling from Liverpool to Dublin, Peter recalls a time when he was sick from the flu, and that sickness almost cost him his career as Spider-Man! Note* The MCP placement of this story in the chronology was shoe-horned (along with 4 other stories) in between Web of Spider-Man #19. However, there is not enough time for the events of this flashback story (which spans at least a few days) and the other stories to fit into a >24 hour window. So this flashback was moved up a bit in the chronology.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance, presumably searching for the Beyonder, when he decides to use the "think system" (ie, the TV) to help his search. Spidey is not seen again in the story, although its worth noting that at that point the Beyonder was being interviewed on TV, so he probably found him!

[Pg. 1 - Page 21 panel 6] "To Challenge The Beyonder!" Spider-Man and the Puma team up to track the Beyonder. The events after pg 21:6 take place one week later, this allows the events of Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #111 (1 - 12:3) to take place.

[Pg. 1 - Page 12 panel 3] "...And Then The Gods Cried" The Puma makes his way back to New York from Japan, as Spider-Man laments the recent events of his life (Death of Captain DeWolff, flipping out on JJJ, Nathan Lubensky in the hospital, etc). Spider-Man then tries to intervene in a car collision, but appeared to do more harm than good.

[Pg. 21 panel 7 - End of page 23] The events depicted on these pages are virtually identical to those portrayed in Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #111 (12:4 -12:8). The dialogue is virtually identical, panel artwork is slightly different. The scene portrays Peter and MJ painting his apartment, when Thomas Fireheart (aka the Puma) arrives at Pete's apartment. After his encounter with the Beyonder, which landed him in Japan, Fireheart realizes how formidable of a foe he is...so he raises Peter's retainer to $100K! Peter thinks he's gone nuts, just then the Beyonder appears before he, Fireheart and MJ!
[Pg. 12 panels 4 - 8] The events depicted in these panels are virtually identical to those portrayed in Amazing Spider-Man #273 (21:7 -23). The panels in PPSSM #111 (12:4-12:8) however, are mid-story, and thus serve as a continuation of the story in ASM #273.

The Beyonder pays another visit to Peter at his apartment and once again expresses his appreciation for the web-slinger. The two chat briefly about the meaning of life and Peter remarks that life is special because it goes by quickly and one needs to appreciate life's moments. The Beyonder is angered by Peter's comments and leaves his apartment irritated (he appears perturbed by the notion that "all human existence is lent meaning by the fitness of life"). Nevertheless, the Beyonder leaves saying that he may not obliterate all of existence due to Peter's remarks (phew!). Peter is not seen again in this story. Editor's note states this story takes place after Web of Spider-Man #11 (in which Peter's Chelsea apartment was damaged due to fire).

Spider-Man makes a single panel cameo in this story, in his black costume, whilst perched to the exterior wall of a building. The majority of this story takes place during Marvel's "Inferno" storyline, and that is the contemporary setting of the story. That would suggest that this panel is in the wrong place. However, the context with which the Spider-Man panel is shown is when the story's protagonist, Officer Jeffrey Piper, is lamenting about how everything in this world is changing. Thus this single shot of Spider-Man in his black costume is an example of that change, and should be placed around the time Spider-Man had changed his costume from red/blue to black. One could make the argument to move this panel even earlier in the timeline, but this placement works as well and allows more overlap with MCP list.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance as he's web-swinging through the city (and through the snow!) and runs out of web-fluid in his cartridges. The Power Pack, specifically Gee, catch him before he falls to ground and bring him to safety. Spidey asks how their mom's doing (who is still in the hospital) then the kids ask if its true that super heroes only eat brussel sprouts. To which Spider-Man responds, "You bet", then he takes off on his way. He's not seen again in this story.

Spider-Man fights alongside all the Marvel heroes in their final (victorious) battle with the Beyonder. During a critical sequence, Spider-Man uses his Spider-sense when the Beyonder's gestation tube is about to let off a massive explosion. These events take place over a short period of time, so its possible for them to occur in between the events of Amazing Spider-Man #276.
|
276.700 |
"Mayhem!" This story is placed in between Amazing Spider-Man #276 because Spidey is on the hunt for the Hobgoblin. So its possible that before seeing the police in Flash's apartment, but after he's seen Flash unmasked, Spider-Man is still not convinced Flash is the true Hobgoblin. Thus, he goes out interrogating guys like Joey Face (using his black Spider-Man costume) in order to get answers to the Hobgoblin's whereabouts.
|
276.800 |
[Pg. 22] Conclusion to the "Unmasked!" story. This portion of the story according to the narration occurs, "Later, after attaining the necessary warrants..." The police make their way through Flash's belongings and find a stash of Hobgobiln gear, making a pretty strong case against Flash. Spider-Man witnesses these events from outside Flash's apartment, and seeing becomes believing. It is at this point that Spider-Man becomes convinced Flash was the Hobgoblin.

Peter Parker gets restless and bored at his apartment one evening where there happens to no crime (or drama of any kind) to occupy himself. After passing time organizing his apartment, then making sculptures with his webbing, he decides to don his Spider-Man costume and go out in to the night. He, hilariously, mistakes an old woman for Doc Ock and eventually goes back to his apartment. Since everyone he knows is either busy, or just not answering his calls, he makes the most desperate decision of all...to call J. Jonah Jameson! Peter sits back and enjoys the earful he gets from the Daily Bugle Publisher. Note* This story takes place after the birth of Normie Osborn, because Harry and Liz's voice mail mention his name.

"Torch Bearing" The majority of this story is a flashback and it involves Peter telling MJ about a time when left his ID/street clothes/broken web-shooter stashed on the torch of the Statue of Liberty. When he goes to retrieve his stuff, the torch had been removed for renovation. Long story short, Peter goes on a wild goose chase to find his stuff and prevent himself from being outted as Spider-Man. It even involves a trip to California! Note* The MCP placement of this story in the chronology was shoe-horned (along with 4 other stories) in between Web of Spider-Man #19. However, there is not enough time for the events of this flashback story (which covers almost a week) and the other stories to fit into a >24 hour window. So this flashback was moved up a bit in the chronology.

[Pg. 6 panels 2 - 7] Eddie Brock recalls the events that led to his first attacks on Peter Parker in Web of Spider-Man #18. There was a former military vet, now a drug addict, named Chuck Stone that helped train Brock in stealth maneuvering. In these panels, the events that led to Peter being shoved onto the rails, by Eddie, are shown from Brock's perspective. Apparently some of the bystanders pointed out that Brock was the one who pushed Peter, but Brock escaped before anyone could grab him.

[Pgs. 1 - 6] "Humbug!" The beginning of this story takes place just "minutes" after Peter was pushed on to the railroad track by Eddie Brock. Thus, Peter is angry and goes out as Spider-Man looking for a fight. He busts up a few criminals and leaves them for the police (Humbug witnesses this but is not seen by Spidey). Based off the time of day in Web of Spider-Man #18, it is early afternoon. The story then breaks here, giving a brief cameo to Solo who is Germany. The remaining portion of the story for Peter Parker (pgs 7 - 22) takes place the next day. It's a tight squeeze, but some other Spidey stories can fit in between this portion of Web of Spider-Man #19.

It's now early afternoon, and Spider-Man makes his way out to Leonia, New Jersey because Spider-Man is doing a piece on the Vision and Scarlet Witch for Now! magazine. When he arrives at their home he's welcomed by the Vision (who was expecting him), as Peter Parker, Peter must pretend to not know the two, even though he's worked with them on numerous occasions. Peter completes the photo shoot of their house, meets a few of their neighbors, and then Vision walks Peter out of his home to the bus stop. When the Vision returns toward his home, his attacked by Mortimer Toynbee aka the Toad-King (who is in a giant Mecha-suit of armor). Suddenly, Spider-Man swings in to help the Vision battle the Toad-King. Spider-Man then recalls the events of Amazing Spider-Man #266. The Toad-King actually defeats Spider-Man and the Vision, but when the villain makes his way into Vision and Wanda's house, the pregnant Maximoff defeats him easily. Spider-Man then webs him down whilst giving Mortimer a life lesson. All of this occurs within an hour or so, and thus Spider-Man makes his way back to New York City.

As Spider-Man, Peter then finds where she lives only to see that Doris is a single mom who's landlord is actively trying to evict her! Spider-Man than uses all the cash he has to give to her (although Doris doesn't know that it is Spider-Man who left the cash) so that she can make her rent. As it turns out, Doris' boss fired her not because of the clerical error but rather she would not accept his sexual advances. When Peter Parker was covering the grand opening of the new Fantastic Four building (4 Freedoms Plaza, replacing the Baxter Building), he witness the Thing leave the building in a huff. Then, later at the press conference for the opening, Peter witnesses Johnny Storm sneak off the stage. He then changes into his Spider-Man costume and tails the Human Torch. At first the Torch is reluctant to talk with Spidey, but then he caves and opens up to his long time pal. He tells Spider-Man that he had asked Ben to be his best man in his upcoming wedding with Alicia Masters (Grimm's former girlfriend). Johnny realizes it was a stupid mistake (which Spidey seconds!) and the two continue to talk and figure out a way to build a bridge with Grimm. Meanwhile, the She-Hulk tracked down Grimm and giant tussle occurs. Turns out, that was orchestrated by Jennifer (basically they got the Thing to demolish a building that was supposed to be torn down). When the Hobgoblin witnesses Spider-Man snapping photos of a drug deal (Spidey was working his way up the chain to get the drug kingpin), he decides he must create a distraction for the web-slinger because the Hobgoblin did not want that exchange perturbed. Thus, the Hobgoblin grabs two kids that were nearby (one of them being Alexander Power of the Power Pack) and he planned to use them as sacrificial lambs to distract Spidey. The plan works, as Spidey takes off toward the Hobgoblin and the captive boys. Hobby tosses one of the boys toward the ground, causing Spidey to give up chase and save him. The other boy, Alexander Power, decides to use his powers and fight the Hobgoblin. Spidey makes his way back to the two of them (there was a good chance that the Hobgoblin would have simply killed the young boy), and he knocks the Hobgoblin to the ground. In order to make his escape, he tosses Alex over the edge of the building top, causing Spidey to rescue the boy whilst the Hobgoblin disappears. Spider-Man then shares a heart-to-heart with Alex about why you shouldn't use you powers to kill people (even those who deserve it). Spidey cites his anger at the Green Goblin when he killed Gwen Stacy. Spidey then swings off, leaving Alex as he makes friends with the boy who was trying to bully him.

[Pgs. 1 - 13] "Wrecking Havoc!" The first half of this story (pgs 1 - 13) take place one week before the events in the second half of the story (pgs 14 - 23). The original MCP list had this entry before the "Gang War" storyline. But the "Gang War" storyline, according to Amazing Spider-Man #288 narration, states that the "Gang War" (ie, ASM 284 - 287) has lasted over several weeks. Thus, this entry was moved closer to the second half of the story, and toward the conclusion of "Gang War".

"...And There Shall Come A Reckoning" Gang War! Part 4. Amazing Spider-Man #286 does not lead directly into Amazing Spider-Man #287, however there is also no clear indication of how much time does pass between the two stories. But, from the narration in Amazing Spider-Man #288 the "Gang War" lasts several weeks. So to create that decompression in the timeline for "Gang War", PPSSM 123, WOSM 25, 27 as well as a few guest appearances can occur during the "Gang War". This gap can also accommodate the week or so that passes during PPSSM 125.

"The War Ends!" Gang War! Part 5 (conclusion). Amazing Spider-Man #288 must take place after Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #123 because in PPSSM 123, Peter formally introduces to the Black Cat to Mary Jane. In ASM 288, the two ladies bump into each other once again in Peter's apartment and recognize each other (although, interestingly Black Cat calls MJ 'Molly Jo'). Although it is worth noting that the Black Cat (when she was dating Peter) came in through the window of his apartment when MJ was there confronting him about being aware that he was Spider-Man. That was the first time the two ladies crossed paths, but that instance was so tumultuous that Peter was not able to formally introduce them.
