Background

”Doctor Strange Master of Black Magic!”

A man came to Strange asking for help with his nightmares. Strange agreed and visited the Ancient One for advice, who told him to depend on his magic amulet. Strange returned to the man and entered his dream as he slept. He was confronted by a man in chains and Nightmare, and ancient dream spirit. The dreaming man turned out to be a crook that was having nightmares because of the people he had ripped off. He was about to shoot Dr Strange while his spirit was out of his body but he was stopped by the Ancient One. The crook was hypnotized and confessed to his crimes. (Strange Tales (vol. 1) #110)

Doctor Stephen Strange was a brilliant but arrogant surgeon. He bragged that his hands could do magic. He lost that "magic" in a car accident, which badly injured his hands. He did everything he could to heal them, but nothing worked. He even traveled to Tibet to find a cure. It was there that he found an old man that taught him the way of magic and told him how to look beyond his own selfish needs. (Strange Tales (vol. 1) #115)

Dr Strange has teamed with Spider-Man on many occasions. Peter, being a scientist, is skeptical of Strange's magic but cant deny that he has been a major help to him in the past.

”The Wondrous World of Doctor Strange!”

Together they held off Xandu in one of their first meetings. The wizard had one half of the Wand of Watoomb, and sent two hypnotized goons to steal the other half from Dr. Strange. The brainwashed thugs easily defeated Strange with help from Xandu, who could see through the sorcerer’s illusion. As they crept out a window after stealing the other half of the wand, Spider-Man just happened to be swinging past. Xandu’s magic made the men super strong and oblivious to pain, so Spider-Man was beaten quickly. He managed to place a spider tracer on one of them, so of course he found them later.

As Spidey observed them, he saw the wand had the ability to open doors to other worlds and to spy on anyone at any place and time. Spidey blinded him with a web but was sucked into a different reality by a spell cast by Xandu. Before he disappeared, Spider-Man hit the wand with a web and yanked it into the portal. At that moment across town, Doctor Strange woke up to see that his half of the wand was missing. The Cloak of Levitation came to him and using the Eye of Agamotto, followed the footsteps of the two crooks. The two had followed Spider-Man into the alien reality and were engaged in battle with him. Xandu watched the battle but was surprised by the arrival of Strange.

The Sorcerer Supreme was gaining the upper hand but Xandu’s goons were returning to their reality, with the wand and Spider-Man. This startled Strange enough to give Xandu time to grab the wand from Spidey. The fight between the webhead and goons went on, leaving Strange to try a new tactic. He went into his astral form and tried to circle around behind Xandu, whom he saw using the wand to find Strange’s body (which was floating in the air over New York, presumably to keep it safe.) He phased through a wall to tell Spider-Man to use the electrical wires behind him to shock the goons. This woke them up and then they passed out. Spidey charged back to find Xandu and Doc Strange soon joined him. The two were too much for him and Spidey managed to take the wand from him.

Strange realized that the wand was too dangerous to be left functional so he drained it of all it’s magic, leaving it an ornament. He then read Xandu’s mind to learn about him, only finding out he was also a student of the mystic arts and had learned of the wand. Strange put him into an enchanted sleep, and his memory of what had had happened would be gone, as would be his ambition. (Amazing Spider-Man (Vol.1) Annual #2)

”Enter Doctor Strange!”

Strange later helped Spidey save Flash Thompson from Vietnamese assassins, who blamed him for destroying their temple and killing their priest while he was in Southeast Asia. The priest had been in some kind of magical suspended animation, which saved his body from the shelling that destroyed the temple. Doc Strange brought him out of his trance; in gratitude, the holy man explained that Flash was innocent. At this time, Flash met Sha Shan. (Amazing Spider-Man #109)

”The Night of the Bend Sinister”

The duo stopped Doctor Doom and the Dread Dormammu when they tried to use an ancient evil called the Bend Sinister to rule the world. (Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #14)

”Things Fall Apart”

Dr Strange unintentionally caused the Black Cat to suffer a terrible beating after he removed her "bad luck" powers, which were effecting Spider-Man. (Spectacular Spider-Man #115)

”Moon Knight’s Inferno”

Strange also used his arcane knowledge to help Moon Knight be separated from Demogoblin’s virus. The demon had intended to use him as a new host and the virus was part of that process. (Marc Spector: Moon Knight #46)

”The Curse of the Darkhold”

He sought a cure for the vampiric Michael Morbius. (Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme #14-#19)

”Triumph and Torment”

While Strange has stopped Doom from ruling the world, he’s also traveled to Hell with the dictator to free his mother, Cynthia von Doom. Cynthia von Doom had been a talented gypsy sorceress who had made a deal with the demon Mephisto to give her people a homeland. Afterward, she confronted Baron Vladimir at his castle, demanding that he repay the peasants that he had wronged. When the baron and his guards mocked her, she used her new magic against them but found that she couldn’t control it. One of the guards injured her and she fled to the woods, only to die in her husbands arms before telling what had happened. She hadn’t properly confessed, which damned her soul to Hell.

Saving his mother’s soul became Victor von Doom’s obsession and battled Mephisto for her every midsummer evening for years without success. He eventually came to Stephen Strange for help but betrayed him after they met with Mephisto in Hell. He gave the demon Dr. Strange in exchange for Cynthia, who was disgusted by what her son had done. Doom found a way to free Strange’s soul and the three of them escaped from Hell after purifying Cynthia’s soul. Cynthia went to a higher place, and the two men returned to earth. (Doctor Doom and Doctor Strange: Triumph and Torment)

”The Road to Dusty Death”

After saving a woman that he assumed was committing suicide as she jumped from a bridge, Spider-Man and the woman were attacked by demons from the Death Dimension. He told her to run as he fought the demons but she threw herself in front of a bus. She was saved by Dr. Strange, who had been observing her via the Orb of Agomotto. She turned out to be Melinda Morrison, the former lover of Xandu.

She was taken to the Sanctum and sedated, letting Strange read her mind to understand her death wish. He learned that after Spider-Man and the Scarlet Witch had returned her to life, Melinda had been having trouble readjusting to life. She wanted to go back to the “sweet repose of oblivion.” Just then, Xandu and his demons arrived at the Sanctum and knocked Spidey out of his body, putting him in the astroplane. Xandu took over his body and took Melinda and the Wand of Watoomb. He escaped and Strange told Spidey that if he didn’t return to his body in 24 hours, he’d cease to exist.

Strange tracked Xandu through the astroplane and found him and Melinda at a portal to the Death Dimension. Strange and Xandu fought, while astro-Spider-Man and Melinda were knocked into the portal. A demon took her to the Skull Castle while Spider-Man was taunted by apparitions of Gwen Stacy and Ben Parker. Peter began to rot away but recovered himself and denied that he had failed his girlfriend and uncle. The demons retreated.

He followed Melinda to Skull Castle and found her surrounded by demons while Xandu’s unconscious body sat on a throne. He took over his body just as Xandu had taken over his and returned to earth. He helped Strange against Xandu and went back to save Melinda. However, Xandu told them that she had been dead for some time, after a spell of his had failed and killed her.

Dr. Strange pondered what to do with her: leave her in the Death Dimension or return her to earth. He left her in the Death Dimension but made her Queen of the Dead. Since balance had to be kept, only one soul could stay there, to make up for Melinda’s escape to earth. Xandu was forced to return to the mortal plane and Strange promised to find a way for him to heal emotionally and accept that death comes for everyone. Peter went to his uncle’s grave, having a new understanding of death. He decided that the best way to honor the dead was to live life. (Spider-Man/Doctor Strange: The Road to Dusty Death)

”Opening Doors”

At the Technomancer Corporation, Gunther Senreich took possession of the Sphere of Sara-Kath, an artifact that could open dimensional doorways. The Technomancers were founded on the desire to gain power through magic and technology but Senreich didn’t realize that the Sphere was opening a door as he talked about it. A creature called Buel arrived with a horde of gremlyns. (Sensational Spider-Man (vol. 1) #21)

Doctor Strange was pulled to Technomancer Tower by mystical forces to find Spider-Man enraptured by what he was seeing. From outside, Dr. Strange used his astral form to guide Spider-Man through the various strange dimensions inside the building to get to get to Buel. The creature was powerful enough to sense Dr. Strange’s astral form and banish it, leaving Spider-Man alone. (Sensational Spider-Man (vol. 1) #22)

A gremlyn had been sent by Buel to kill Strange’s body at the Sanctum Sanctorum but Strange saved himself after realizing that he had been using an ogre spell against a gremlyn. Strange’s astral form returned to Spider-Man and again led him through the various dimensions at Technomancer Tower. They found the Sphere of Sara-Kath and as Spidey was about to grab it, his spider sense pulled him away. The Sphere was taken by Buel but he was beaten by Spider-Man and Dr. Strange. (Sensational Spider-Man (vol. 1) #23)

”Lifeline”

The Lifeline Tablet had once been used by the elderly Silvermane to regain his youth, but it backfired and he de-aged too much. (Amazing Spider-Man #74) Years later, new pieces of the ancient tablet had been found, giving a more accurate understanding of how to use it’s knowledge. Peter was at the gala unveiling to get pictures when the artifact was stolen by Man-Mountain Marko. Just like previously, Dr. Curtis Connors was kidnapped and forced to create a new formula based on the complete tablet. (Spider-Man: Lifeline #1)

Connors drank the formula and became a more-powerful-than-usual Lizard. Doctor Strange went to see Prince Namor to learn more about the tablet. (Spider-Man: Lifeline #2)

The Lizard made an improved batch of the formula but was stopped by Spidey, the police, Doctor Strange, Hammerhead and Boomerang. Hammerhead drank the formula and gained the power of a god. He returned the Lizard to being Curt Connors, and offered to return Gwen Stacy to life for Spider-Man. The price was that another life would have to be taken to keep the cosmic balance. Hammerhead lost the godlike power and Strange sent the tablet to another dimension to keep it safe. (Spider-Man: Lifeline #3)

Years later, it turned out that the tablet had been transported to the dimension of Gog and an alien war broke out over it. (Amazing Spider-Man #843)

”The Totem Saga”

Peter leaned on Strange's talents especially hard after the mysterious Ezekiel Sims came into his life. Zeke (as Peter called him) claimed that Spider- Man's powers are actually based in magic, not just from a radioactive spider. New, magical enemies were coming for Peter, and Morlun was first on the list. (Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #30

Peter was working as a substitute teacher at his old high school and learned that one of his students had gone missing. When Spidey finally found the kidnapper, he saw a man like a shadow and a kid being pulled into a void. The Shade escaped and Spidey went to Strange for help. He was allowed to use the Hand of Vishanti to travel to the astral plane, where Shade was hiding. Strange warned Spider-Man to not stray from the path while in the other dimension but of course he did, and drew the attention of a supernatural predator. (Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #40-#42)

As Peter restlessly dreamt one night, he was visited in his sleep by Dr. Strange. Strange told him that when he left the path he was sensed by his natural predator, the Spider-Wasp. He told Peter to look up a page in one of his books when he woke up. In the book, Peter found a description of the spider-wasps reproductive system: the wasp lays an egg on a captured spider, which is eaten by the larva. (Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #46)

”Happy Birthday”

While Peter would have preferred to spend his birthday with Mary Jane (and really, who wouldn't?) a horde of Mindless Ones crashed into New York. The creatures were beaten back by the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man and Cyclops, much to Strange's remorse. Forcing them back to their realm aided Dormammu in reforming his body. (Amazing Spider-Man #498)

Fully assembled, Dormammu engaged Strange in battle. Spidey interfered, and the spell being cast by Strange backfired, taking the two of them through space and time. (Amazing Spider-Man #499)

Peter relived important moments in his life, and Strange attempted to guide him back to the present time. During his time wandering through the past, he re- lived his first battles with many of his enemies: Mysterio, Sandman, Vulture and Electro. He again experienced the death of Gwen Stacy and many other battles. After he finally "caught up" to the present, Strange gave him his own birthday gift: a few moments to talk with Uncle Ben. (Amazing Spider-Man #500)

”Read Em and Weep”

Strange attended a charity poker game hosted by the Thing. Also present were Spider-Man, Black Cat, the Fantastic Four and Angel. They were amused that Strange didn’t know how to play the game and that he hadn’t learned in medical school. He learned by watching ESPN. Spidey quipped that Strange might have a chance if he used tarot cards. The game was interrupted by Wilson Fisk, who “requested” that he be included. His offer was that if he lost the game, he’d double the winning prize to the charity. If he won, he’d use the money to buy a yacht and name it “Heroes Folly.” Naturally Spider-Man beat Fisk. Strange still wasn’t sure if Spidey won. (Spectacular Spider-Man (vol. 2) #21)

”The Other”

Peter had been killed and devoured by Morlun but was brought back to life by a spider god. (Amazing Spider-Man #527) After consulting with the Avengers he went to see Dr. Strange. He told Peter that he saw something interesting about him but there was nothing to be scared of. He was at the center of a web, a cosmic web that he couldn’t feel but was very real. Peter asked if he was the spider or the meal. Strange said that depending on perspective, he could be one or both. He apologized for being unclear but cosmic forces had been disturbed by his return and created an uproar in the netherworld. There would be a “hard corrective response.” Peter realized he’d met the “response” already: Ero. (Marvel Knights Spider-Man (vol. 1) #22)

”One More Day”

Peter needed Dr Strange more than ever after his Aunt May was shot by a sniper hired by the Kingpin. Peter had revealed his ID on TV during the Superhuman Registration Act, which made him a target for all of his enemies. Kingpin put a hit out on Parker's family and May was mortally wounded. There was nothing that the doctors could do, so Peter turned to the Sorcerer Supreme. Strange couldn't risk playing God, but briefly gave Peter the ability to speak with every expert he knew (Mr Fantastic, Doctor Octopus and Doctor Doom among them) at the same time to find a way to save May. None could help. (Amazing Spider-Man #546)

However, a strange little girl offered help to Spider-Man as he left Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum. The child was Mephisto in disguise, whom told Peter that only he could save May. His price was Peter’s marriage to Mary Jane, because it meant more to both of them than either of their souls. Peter was wracked by indecision, so Mary Jane made the deal. The demon’s trick was that the little girl he appeared to Peter as, was the daughter that they’d now never have. (Amazing Spider-Man #547)

”One Moment in Time”

Mephisto changed the space time continuum so that a thug in Electro's gang escaped from police custody and made Peter late for his wedding. This infuriated MJ who decided she couldn't marry him. The demon had nothing to do with the world forgetting Spider-Man's secret identity, however. That honor went to Dr Strange, Mister Fantastic and Iron Man. Their combined expertise in magic and science erased all memory of Peter revealing his ID. It would also keep others from figuring out his secret in the future. (Amazing Spider-Man #638-#641)

”Spider Island”

This spell was weakened during Spider-Island, when New Yorkers were transformed into man-spiders by the Jackal and the Queen. Peter went on air (unmasked) to goad people to help end the rioting by using their new-found spider powers for good. He admitted that he had "recently been bitten and gained powers as well." Later, his girlfriend, Carlie Cooper, confided in him that she had found out that he was Spider-Man because he seemed too experienced at his powers to have just gotten them. She left him, because he had been lying to her. Peter confronted Dr Strange, furious that the spell seemed to have failed. Strange told Peter that by announcing on TV that he also had spider powers, the spell had been weakened. People would now have the ability to figure out he was Spider-Man. (Amazing Spider-Man #673)

”The Goblin Cometh!”

Strange later helped to take part in escorting Norman Osborn from his prison cell at the Raft. Dr Strange was disguised as Osborn and was "rescued" by H.A.M.M.E.R. agents while being moved by The Thing, Spider-Man and Luke Cage. Strange captured the H.A.M.M.E.R. agents after they thought they had gotten away. The real Osborn was simultaneously being moved by Wolverine, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones. (New Avengers (vol. 2) #16.1)

"Ends of the Earth"

After Doctor Octopus tried to destroy humanity with global warming satellites and killed Silver Sable and the Rhino in the process, Spider-Man explained to Captain America what Silver meant to him. He told Rogers about an incident involving Dr Doom, Silver Sable and Dr. Strange. Strange had hired Sable to protect Princess Lenka, a Symkarian princess forcibly engaged to Dr. Doom by her father. Lenka had the potential to be the next Sorcerer Supreme and Strange brought her to New York to keep her safe from Victor. Only by marriage and consummation of that marriage would she be of no use to Dr. Doom. She had a crush on Spider-Man but didn't know she had to sleep with him, which she refused to do. Strange kept her safe while Spidey found her true love, a Symkarian boy that Lenka had sent away to keep safe from Doom. Dr. Strange helped fight Doom when he arrived at the Embassy to stop the marriage. (Avenging Spider-Man #8)

"A Day in Someone Else's Life"

Strange briefly met the Superior Spider-Man after the good doctor was unknowingly infected by the Carrion virus. Stephen was defeated by being punched in the face and knocked out. The sentient virus then fled and Spider-Man followed it. (Superior Spider-Man Team Up #1)

”Magic Bullets”

On Coney Island, Dr. Strange was battling an invisible demon with an ax. As the public couldn’t see the creature, they assumed that Strange was a performance artist. After the demon was defeated, Strange hated that he needed to use weapons instead of pure magic after the Mystical Garden had been destroyed. At the Sanctum Sanctorum, he was told by his librarian that someone was there to see him. The Punisher waited for him outside, saying he needed help. He had just killed many members of the Fusilli crime family and found something disturbing. Strange wanted nothing to do with him until Punisher told him that what he found would burn New York down. (Dr. Strange/Punisher: Magic Bullets #1)

Strange says he can’t use magic anymore but can still use mystical artifacts, which amuses Punisher. They returned to the restaurant that Punisher had attacked previously and their attempt at stealth failed when Punisher killed a guard. Inside the restaurant, Livio and Lucretia Fusilli spoke with Prentice Mangrove, who had promised to give them the powers of the demons that Punisher had seen. When a guard warned them about Punisher and Strange, the building exploded and the demons were released. (Dr. Strange/Punisher: Magic Bullets #2)

The demons turned out to be possessed humans. Strange and Punisher tried to make their way inside the restaurant to find the portal but Punisher’s guns had no effect on the demons. Strange threw him a wand, telling him to point it at the creatures and imagine them in a prison. It didn’t work, leaving Punisher to snap the wand in half and stab the creatures with them. Strange made his way inside the restaurant’s kitchen and found Mangrove summoning more demons from the portal. He didn’t know Mangrove but Mangrove knew Strange. When Punisher finally got inside, he realized that the creatures weren’t inherently dangerous, they were families from another reality forced to work for Mangrove. The Fusilli siblings arrived and attacked the heroes with fire, which Strange blocked with a shield. He got Punisher to look at an amulet that teleported them away. They only got as far as outside the building but managed to overhear Mangrove’s plan. (Dr. Strange/Punisher: Magic Bullets #3)

"Hunted"

While being hunted by robots in Central Park, Billy Connors explained to the Black Cat that he knew he was a clone. (Billy had been killed by the Lizard and cloned by the Jackal (Ben Reilly).) Curt Connors had taken Billy to see Doctor Strange to see if the clone had Billy's soul. Strange confirmed that Billy's essence inhabited the cloned body. Sadly, the memory of being killed by his father's animal alter-ego started coming back to him. (Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 5) #21)

”Last Remains”

For months, Peter had been tormented by nightmares of an undead creature with a vendetta that called itself Kindred. The creature let Peter witness it kill Mysterio and the Robot Master in his dreams.

”King in Black”

When Knull, god of the symbiotes, attacked earth with his symbiotic dragon horde he quickly overpowered Doctor Strange and the X-Men. Captain America’s last orders were given to Black Cat, telling her to run and find reinforcements. She went to Alchemax Industries to recruit Dr. Steve, an expert in alien biology. With her crew of thieves, Cat was going to steal Strange back from Knull. (Black Cat (Vol. 4) #1)

Strange was being kept in a symbiote hive on top of the Chrysler building and was rescued when Cat entered the mass of symbiote while wearing a temporary Anti-Venom costume. She also gave the unconscious doctor his own Anti-Venom and they escaped. Unfortunately he stayed unconscious as the group evaded the symbiote dragons in the spider buggy. They made it back to Alchemax and Cat used an artifact that Strange’s ghost dog had brought from the Sanctum. It gave her Asgardian armor, against the dog’s advice. (Black Cat (Vol. 4) #2)

"Venom War"

Strange led Dylan Brock through The Flickering Realms to meet Chthon, a being that he described as "more than a demon. He is to demons what the universe is to humanity." Brock was there to ask for help and the entity would ask for something small and seemingly unimportant in return. Dylan passed Chthon's test by saving the lives of the creature's "children" instead of saving his own. He was transported to the demon's throne, where Strange was waiting. They had been discussing Chthon's indifference to the fall of humanity. Chthon always knew that he would outlive humanity, so it's end was unimportant to him. Strange appealed to it's ego, asking if it bothered the creature that humanity would die without Chthon's permission or influence. It warned Strange against trying to twist his thoughts, and he replied it had been an honest question. Strange knew he would fail in his part of the story and it haunted him. The demon children convinced their father to make an offer to Dylan and after he agreed to give them his first love, all memories of his mother, all the music he knew, all his friendships, his taste and his dreams at night. Chthon asked for Dylan's name. Strange reminded him of what he said and Dylan agreed to the bargain. Chthon infused his magic into Dylan's weapon and transported them safely back to the Sanctum Sanctorum. Strange woke Dylan up, who had forgotten his name and how to get to where he needed to go. Strange teleported him to (Venom LGY #238)
