SMURF : Peter's Birth to the Death of Uncle Ben

 Chronology: Comics Index by Date

These are the Spider-Man Unified Reading Flow codes for the SMURF era beginning with 000.000.

This first era covers Peter Parker's birth and early childhood as well as some of his time in high school. His origin as Spider-Man is the featured event of this section and it ends on the night he confronts the burglar who killed his Uncle Ben. That traumatic event causes Spider-Man to acknowledge (through the narrator) that with great power comes great responsibility, thus marking his path toward becoming a super hero!

000.010
Mary finds out she is pregnant with Peter.
000.020
[Pg. 1 panel 2] This single panel flashback depicts a time shortly after Peter's birth, when his parents give him the name "Peter." Uncle Ben and Aunt May are present and after Uncle Ben chimes in, Peter gets the middle name "Benjamin."
000.050
[Pg. 3 panel 6] Baby Peter, in diapers, crawls to his parents, Richard and Mary Parker.
000.100
[Pg. 15 panels 1 - 4] Mary hands Peter to May so that she can play with him. This event is watched by Peter on an old family film.
000.110
[Pg. 2 panels 1 - 2] Ben and May babysit for Peter, Ben comments on how well Richard and Mary are raising him.
000.130
[Pg. 11 panel 2] Peter's parents ask May and Ben to look after Peter while they're away on his work trip.
000.150
[Pg. 1] Richard and Mary leave Peter with Ben and May as they leave for their trip.
000.155
[Pg. 4 panel 1] Richard and Mary leave Peter with Ben and May as they leave for their trip, they're closer to car in this scene.
000.157
[Pg. 21 panel 1] This single panel flashback depicts Spider-Man recalling how Aunt May and Uncle Ben raised him since he was an infant. This panel depicts Peter, as an infant, wrapped in a blanket being held by Aunt May and Uncle Ben.
000.160
[Pg. 11 panel 3] May and Baby Peter wave goodbye to Richard and Mary as they are boarding the plane.
000.165

000.171
[Pg. 14 panels 2 - 3] Ben and May find out that Richard and Mary have died (via a phone call).
000.172
[Pg. 2 panel 1] May is informed over the phone about the death of Richard and Mary Parker, and that she must pick Peter up because they are now his legal guardians.
000.174
[Pg. 2 panel 2 - Pg. 3 panel 3] May and Ben pick up an infant Peter from what appears to be some sort of hospital or government facility. This entry gets a discontinuity tag because Peter was already in his aunt and uncle's custody when his parents were killed (they had left him with May and Ben before they left). So the notion that Peter was picked up at a hospital/government facility after they heard the news does not align with established canon.
000.175
[Pg. 11 panels 5 - 6] Ben and May realize that they will be raising Peter since his parents have died.
000.195
[Pg. 2 panel 3] Ben, May, Peter and others attend Richard and Mary's funeral.
000.200
[Pg. 5 panel 4] Ben, May, Peter and others attend Richard and Mary's funeral, Peter depicted slightly older than expected. This scene suggests that although Peter's parents disappeared, they did have the funeral until years later because they could not "accept that they were dead." The implication is that Richard and Mary Parker were treated as missing persons for some time. This, however, does not agree with other depictions of their death.
000.250
[Pgs. 1 - 3] Young Peter asks May about fear and Aunt May gives him a heartfelt answer. Aunt May then clutches her chest in pain, and Uncle Ben reminds her to take her heart medicine.
000.260

000.300

[Pgs. 6 - 7] Young Peter attends first day of school.
000.327
[Pg. 1 - Page 6 panel 1] During a blackout, Uncle Ben helps Peter make friends in the neighborhood. Peter describes this as taking place a 'few years' after he'd been living with his Aunt and Uncle and one year after his parents had died.
000.330
[Pg. 1 panel 1] Peter celebrates his birthday with friends.
000.335
[Pg. 12 panel 3 - Pg. 15 panel 1] While visiting his Uncle Ben's grave, Peter shares a conversation (in his head) with his deceased uncle. They share a memory of Peter's first grade play, in which he had the role of the 'third ant' in the play entitled "Soldier Ants and Ladybugs." Peter recalls that despite being super excited for the performance, when the curtain was raised, he froze, completely forgetting his line. Their 'discussion' ends with Ben reminding Peter that he would have become someone like Spider-Man with or without his powers and he cites Peter's motivation coming not just from the loss of Uncle Ben but also his parents. *Note As touching as this scene is, it has massive discontinuity flags. First and foremost the idea of Peter's parents still alive while he was in first grade conflicts with virtually every other entry around his early years. The consensus is that Richard and Mary died when he was still an infant. Also, Uncle Ben suggests that May and Mary are sisters, which is not the case. Ben and Richard are brothers, which is how Peter is connected to Uncle Ben and Aunt May.
000.340
[Pg. 14 panels 3 - 5] Carl King bullies Peter, dunkingĀ  his head in a school toilet.

In his science lab, he makes a formula that he gives to Flash, telling him it's a performance-improving energy drink. Flash downs it. Soon after, on the football field, Flash turns blue! All the students laugh at him but what's worse is that he's kicked off the team for a game (the 'big game' in fact) because the coaches thought he was using performance-enhancing drugs. Peter's plan worked too well and he regretted going from being bullied to being the bully. Peter shares this story of regret to young boy who is being bullied, warning him that exacting revenge is not the right path. Learning to deal with your bully, and being proud of who you are is the right path.

000.755
[Pg. 2 panels 7 - 8] After Flash pushes Peter out of the way (and on to the ground), Peter asks Liz specifically if she would like to go with him to the science exhibit. *Note there is potential for discontinuity here, in this case, Peter's attention is toward Liz Allan. In AFSY 15, it's Sally Avril. It's entirely possible that Peter asked both girls, both of whom were more interested in Flash Thompson and both cases Flash bullied Peter out of the picture. It's worth including both scenes to be as comprehensive as possible with this chronology, also, in AFSY 15 2:6, Liz is amongst the crowd that Peter is attempting to invite to the science exhibit.

000.807
[Pg. 1 panels 7 - 9] Peter's challenge of Crusher Hogan is recorded (using a cell phone) by one of the spectators. That spectator is Clayton Cole, the young man who would eventually become the villain Clash. *Note this entry gets a discontinuity tag because in this sequence the reward for battling Crusher Hogan is listed as $1000, not $100 as depicted in Amazing Fantasy #15.
000.808
The events leading to Crusher Hogan meeting Peter in the ring are shown here. The story ends with Peter hopping into the ring with Crusher Hogan. *Note Peter's only appearance in the story is on the final page.
