J. Jonah Jameson, aka Mayor of New York City, pays a visit to Jamie Madrox (aka Multiple Man), who leads X-Factor Investigations, a detective agency. In exchange for the favor Jameson had paid Madrox (by not busting up his investigative firm), Jameson asks Madrox to investigate the murder of General Samuel Ryan. General Ryan was an old friend of Jameson, he knew him from when JJJ covered him as a journalist way back in the day. The arrival of the mayoral motorcade drew Spidey's attention, as the web-slinger assumed Jameson was causing trouble for someone. When he pops in on a nearby rooftop he spots two other X-Factor members (M aka Monet St. Croix and Shatterstar aka Willie Garvin) who are also keeping a distant, yet watchful eye on the situation. After Spider-Man rips on JJJ, Monet takes the mayor's side in his war on the web-slinger that had persisted for years. She claims his anonymity is all the rationale JJJ needs. Spidey pushes back against her argument but then quickly leaves the rooftop. Spider-Man is not seen again in the story. *Note An editor's note at the beginning of the story states that this story takes place before Amazing Spider-Man #654.

[Pg. 19 panel 4] Spider-Man makes a single panel non-speaking (flashback) cameo when Anya references a conversation she had with Spider-Man regarding the recent death of her father. Despite her admitting that Spider-Man does understand her struggle, her take was that Spidey sees her as Spider-Girl, not Anya. Suggesting Spider-Man was not as personally connected to her as she would have liked. Spider-Man is not seen again in the story.
656.700

This story depicts the conversation that followed Spider-Man approaching Franklin Richards on the rooftop (as seen in story #1). Franklin, who idolizes Spider-Man, has a heart-to-heart with him as he shares his feelings about his lost uncle. Spider-Man connects with him because he had lost his uncle when he was young as well. Spidey gives him good advice, a hot dog and ride on his back web-swinging through the city with the hopes of cheering Franklin up. It appeared to have worked a bit.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance at the conclusion of this story when Noh Varr (aka Marvel Boy aka the Protector) introduces his girlfriend to his fellow Avengers at the Avengers Tower. Suddenly, the Red Hulk comes crashing through the window uttering the word "infinity."
657.540
The Red Hulk explains to the group that he was attacked by a man wielding colored gems (Stark realizes he's talking about the Infinity Stones). The mysterious man in question is Parker Robbins (aka The Hood). Stark convenes the Illuminati to discuss this development. At the conclusion of the story Spider-Man, Cap and all the other heroes confront Illuminati and ask them what they are doing. To this point, no one outside the Illuminati even knew that they existed and that they've been manipulating events for years.
657.560
The heroes continue to confront Stark and the other members of the Illuminati. Obviously all the heroes outside of the Illuminati are not very happy with them, especially the close team members.
657.580
Due to the team's mistrust of Stark and the other members of the Illuminati, Rogers kicks Stark out of the Avengers. Nevertheless, Cap and Iron Man (and many of the other Avengers including Spider-Man) go to Area 51 in New Mexico (Stark had purchased the facility from the US Government). The Illuminati had hidden some of the Infinity Gems at this facility. However, when the arrive, the Hood is already inside the facility with the gems. He uses the gems to blast the heroes then disappears immediately...
657.600

The gems then reunite, completing the Infinity Gem gauntlet for Stark. He uses the Gauntlet to place the Hood in jail and also to wish the Infinity Gems out of existence. Spider-Man does not do much in this story aside from spectating.

The sonic-based villain had usurped the Savage Land Vibranium and was no working with AIM to take over the world. However, only Spider-Man was present at the time, so she had to settle for only his help. Soon after, Spider-Man and Shuri infiltrate an AIM facility and are able to get one of the scientists to spill info on Klaw's plan (Shuri's helper Flea also stole information from the AIM database during that interrogation). Shuri and Spider-Man then storm an AIM design lab. After a brief confrontation with Klaw, Spider-Man prevents Shuri from taking her revenge out on him (Klaw killed her father), and rather, helps her focus on their mission (which was the shield generator). Spider-Man stays behind to battle Klaw. Shuri eventually locates the generator and learns about Klaws plans to unleash MUSIC (Multiframe Universal Integration Codec). More specifically, MUSIC is what remains of a young girl named Joya, the daughter of an AIM scientist, who was put into orbit alongside Klaw's vibranium and is integral to his plan for world domination...
657.660
Spider-Man, now in the clutches of Klaw, is spared by the villain who leaves the AIM design lab in order to enact his plan (plus in his new world he'll need strong slaves like Spidey). Spider-Man regroups with Shuri, now aware of Klaw's plan. The villain hijacked an AIM space station and in order to attack that station they'll need break through so serious anti-intrusion tech to break through its failsafe. Bottom line, they need a top notch spy. Spidey calls Steve Rogers who sends them Black Widow. Spider-Man stays behind at the AIM design lab to clean up and see if he can get more information. Shuri takes off to meet with the Black Widow to stop Klaw. Spider-Man is seen only one more time in the story, alongside various other heroes who are being tortured when Klaw activates "The Scream." Eventually Shuri and the Black Widow stop Klaw.

Urich manages to escape, so Spidey's efforts were not very effective. Nevertheless, he lectures Anya that she should never try to battle the Hobgoblin alone again! *Note This entry was moved up slightly from its MCP placement because the Future Foundation has been started, but it appears Spider-Man has not been integrated into the team yet. In fact, one could argue that he was on his way to the matriculation process before witnessing Spider-Girl battling the Hobgoblin on TV.

Paladin even tells Misty Knight, who serves as mission control, that he doesn't get along with Spider-Man because he (Paladin) works for money and Spidey is purely altruistic. Nevertheless, Spider-Man is persistent and manages to get Paladin to share details of his mission (he's tracking a shipment of lethal Atlantean narcotic called Hook). Spider-Man also talks to Misty Knight and she provides the details on how this new Heroes for Hire business works (not everyone works for money, some work for information or simply altruism). The only thing that keeps Spider-Man alive is that Colossus holds back and does not want to kill Spider-Man. Nevertheless Spider-Man continues to try to get inside both of their heads.

Spider-Man makes a brief appearance when he shares a conversation (and a training session!) with the newly minted Captain Marvel (aka Carol Danvers). After throwing Spider-Man around the gym for a few minutes, she goes on her way. *Note Avenging Spider-Man #9 is the 'first appearance' of Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel. However, an editor's note at the beginning of that story states that the events of Captain Marvel (Vol. 6) #1 takes place before Avenging Spider-Man #9.

After a brief tussle (and Spider-Man being launched a mile by the Maestro), Johnny Storm stops the fighting and allows the Maestro in to see it. Soon after, the machine is fully powered and ready to return to Nu World...Maestro goes along with Ted and Alyssa Moy back to Nu World.

The Father, leader and creator of group of artificial life forms known as the Descendants, attacks New York City using a combination of his own robot army and taking control of various other robots within the city. Spider-Man, and many other heroes stand up to confront the robots. Spider-Man is first attacked by the Reavers but there are plenty of any robot combatants to take on.
694.620
Spider-Man continues to battle the Father and giant Robot army, but is struggling to make any progress in slowing them down. He's saved by Captain Britain when he was nearly killed by the Father, and soon after he, Captain Britain, Hawkeye and the Beast work together to combat the invasion. The Father's plan involves a nano-mist that converts normal people into robots under his control. The Orb of Necromancy, which the heroes possess, is the only way to stop him. Destroying the Orb will destroy the nano-virus and the Descendants. However, Spider-Man and the others are attacked by roboticized versions of Wasp and Giant Man, who steal the Orb from the heroes. Eventually, Pym is able to overcome the control of the Father, convert to Giant Man and take on the Father inside his giant robot.

Daredevil hires Spider-Man to be his bodyguard when he goes out on a date with the Assistant DA Kirsten McDuffie. However, at the end of the story (and the date), with Spider-Man diverted, Murdock and McDuffie are attacked by a masked criminal claiming to be working for Black Spectre. The criminal then disappears quickly as he arrived. *Note When Daredevil asks Spider-Man to be his bodyguard for his date, Spider-Man first asks if it is a date with Black Cat. When DD says no, Spider-Man immediately agrees to help. This is a nod to the Daredevil (Vol. 3) #8 story when DD and Black Cat kiss, and Spider-Man gets jealous.
694.680
It is revealed that the masked criminal that attacked Murdock on his date was Spider-Man! In fact, Daredevil hired Wolverine, Luke Cage and Mockingbird to attack him at Times Square. The point of these staged attacks was to make a public display of villainy of Megacrime, Black Spectre and the other criminal enterprises Murdock has been trying to stop.

Spider-Man makes a single panel non-speaking cameo as he and a few of the Avengers are cheered on by a crowd of New Yorkers. They are being celebrated for their recent work to prevent a massive explosion from harming innocent civilians (this occurred in Dark Avengers #182). The unstable energy chamber (located just off the former supermax facility known as the Raft) was safely detonated outside Earth's atmosphere. Spider-Man is not seen again in the story.

When Tony Stark and Bruce Banner place a bet with one another as to who can form a team that will find a missing Russian scientist named Sergei Sorokin, Spider-Man is one of the heroes they ask to join. Spider-Man declines, claiming he's on like six team at the moment. Spider-Man is later depicted alongside Wolverine and Captain Marvel at Avengers Tower keeping tabs on the success of the two different teams. *Note Carol Danvers is depicted as Captain Marvel, so this must take place after Captain Marvel (Vol. 6) #1.
694.960
Tony Stark and Bruce Banner's teams both failed to find Sorokin...however, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man and the other heroes did manage to track down the scientist. This makes both Stark and Banner the losers of their bet, which means both had to do the naked walk of shame from the Baxter Building to Avengers Tower. Spider-Man even snapped photos of the event for the Daily Bugle!

Spider-Man makes a single panel non-speaking cameo alongside fellow Avengers Thor and Iron Man as they battle a giant monster in New York City. Daredevil was tracking an evidence-stealing gnome when he came across this battle, which prevented him from being able to continue to track the gnome.

As the giant monster continues to rampage through New York City, Spider-Man helps to save civilians who's apartment buildings have been torn apart by the monster. Spidey saves a woman, who then screams for him to go back and save her baby. Before Spidey can do that, Daredevil swoops in and saves the child. Spidey asks Daredevil to stick around and help coordinate the response, but Murdock just runs off without talking...he's too fixated on catching the gnome named Buggit. This gnome has run off and plans to suicide-bomb a man named Milo, who had killed his friend Michael.

Spider-Man makes a single panel non-speaking cameo as he, alongside his Avenger teammates, cleans up the debris and wreckage caused by a recent attack by the mutant terrorist Avalanche. Spider-Man is not seen again in the story.

After the Avengers take down a monster called Infernock, Wolverine tries to kill it because it had burned off half of his face. The other Avengers, including Spider-Man, stop him from doing so. Later, at Avengers Tower, Spider-Man tries to talk to Wolverine about what caused him to flip out like that, but Wolverine wants nothing to do with the conversation. Soon after, Elektra comes crawling through the window and tells Wolverine she needs him for a mission (this ultimately involves working for the Kingpin). At first Spider-Man thinks they want him to come as well, but then he realizes Elektra had no intent for him to come along. Wolverine then makes Spider-Man swear he won't tell anyone where he went. *Note An editor's note at the beginning of the story states that these events take place "awhile back. Like, at least, before last October." That is most likely a reference to the fact this story involves Peter Parker Spider-Man, and not Otto Octavius as the Superior Spider-Man.
695.060
After Wolverine and Elektra's work with the Kingpin is complete, Logan returns to Avengers Tower. Upon entering his room, and feeling a combination of despondent and surly, Logan is greeted by Spider-Man. The web-slinger had sewed Wolverine's sheets (which Spidey had torn with a one of Wolverine's swords in issue #6). Logan then tells Spider-Man he can keep him company, if he can remain quiet...

[Pg. 10 panel 2] This single panel flashback depicts Iron Man and Captain America recruiting Spider-Man to join their new Avengers effort. They're able to convince him...with money. *Note It is not explicitly stated how long before the contemporary portion of this story that this panel takes place, however, one can assume it was within a few weeks.

Spider-Man and the Beast (unintentionally) travel in time to the future where Beasts rule the land and humans are undead zombies. These 'Beasts' are direct descendants of Hank McCoy, who worship him as the 'Origin Maker.' Spider-Man, on the other hand, is not so lucky, he's thrown into a gladiatorial combat with a giant blue Beast monster. Eventually McCoy finds out what they did with Spider-Man, so he joins the web-slinger in the ring to defeat the giant beast. McCoy then rebukes the Queen Beast, Talia, and he and Spider-Man return home (somehow). *Note Editorial notes at the beginning of this story state that this takes place for Doc Ock replaces Peter Parker as the Superior Spider-Man.

Spider-Man helps Iron Man and Captain America build their Avengers Machine (a retrofitted quinjet). Stark and Roger's basic plan for this new team is to go bigger than before, to take on the bigger threats that are constantly coming at them. After Spider-Man reads in the newspaper that Frank Castle has been "utilizing an unknown device to swing between buildings" (ie, Castle stole one of his web-shooters), Spidey decides to confront Castle. The web-slinger is extremely pissed that the Punisher used something he had made in order to kill. So Spider-Man begins to attack the Punisher, with the intent of turning him over to the authorities. The Punisher did not go down easily though, and after he detonates a grenade that causes Spider-Man to lose his bearings, Frank then knocks him unconscious. The Punisher is then able to escape. That is, of course, after he steals another one of Spider-Man's web-shooters!
695.300
Spider-Man makes a single page appearance at Avengers Tower when he confronts Natasha Romanov (aka the Black Widow) regarding her recent battle with Frank Castle. Spider-Man is disappointed she let him go, but she counters with the fact that she saved 117 children in the process. As Natasha walks off, Spidey laments that no one is taking Frank's war seriously.
695.320
Spider-Man and the Avengers set up a sting to capture Frank Castle. The recently convicted (of murder) former Marine Sergeant Rachel Cole-Alves had acted as a proxy for the Punisher during his war on crime. She was being transported upstate and the Avengers tried to use that as bait to draw out Castle. However, Frank out-maneuvers them, steals Iron Man's armor and attacks Spider-Man. After neutralizing the web-slinger, he absconds with Cole-Alves and heads into the wind. The Avengers are left with nothing.
695.340
The Avengers regroup and go back out after Frank Castle. They're able to track him thanks to Spider-Man having placed a Spider-tracer on him. It takes all the efforts from Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow and Spider-Man to eventually bring Frank down. The Punisher was even able to unload a shotgun blast on to Spider-Man, he used rubber bullets of course. It turns out, after they have Castle in custody, that all this running and non-lethal force was just a distraction by Castle to allow Cole-Alves to escape authorities. Soon after, we see that she has now taken on the role of the Punisher and begins her war on crime. *Editor's note at the beginning of this story states that these events take place before Amazing Spider-Man #698.
