New Avengers (Vol. 2) #11

Background

Last issue two stories both past and present involved two teams of Avengers. One team in 1959 was Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dugan, Victor Creed, Kraven The Hunter, Namorta, Dominic Fortune and the original Silver Sable were about to track down The Red Skull who was working on something powerful. The other team are The New Avengers who have just taken down a H.A.M.M.E.R. base. During that battle Mockingbird was shot. While mockingbird was receiving medical attention the H.A.M.M.E.R. leader Superia attacked the team with a giant energy attack.

Story Details

Mockingbird arrives at hospital with Spidey, The Thing and Dr. Strange. Mockingbird flat lines while the medics try to revive her. The Thing says they should call her ex-husband Hawkeye and let him know whats happened. In Switzerland 1959, Fury tells his team they are close to The Red Skull and they're there to fight not to infiltrate. Creed asks what the plan is. In the present The New Avengers that were attacked by Superia regain consciousness and realize she has escaped. Jessica Jones tells them Mockingbird got shot. Spidey and co. are teleported back to the team by Dr. Strange who tells them things look bad for Mockingbird. Spidey tells everyone they were set up by Victoria Hand, their S.H.I.E.L.D. liaison who used to work for H.A.M.M.E.R. In 1959 the team are watching some suspected Nazis when Creed spots a way in. He allows himself to be run over by a truck, kills the driver and steals the truck. The team use the truck to sneak into the Nazi base for a surprise attack. During the fight Namorta uses a whale to flood the base.

In the present Victoria Hand tells Steve Rogers, the original Captain America about H.AM.M.E.R when Hawkeye walks in. She tells them she sent The New Avengers to take down a H.AM.M.ER base and there was a casualty, Mockingbird. Hawkeye rushes off and Hand tells Rogers that she knows the team will think she’s set them up. In 1959 Fury’s team are still looking for The Red Skull when they are confronted by Captain America.

General Comments

Interesting cliffhanger with Captain America appearing in 1959. Cap was frozen at this time so I doubt this Cap is the real one. It's possible this Cap could be the 1950's Cap recently featured in Captain America so well have to see who this masked man really is.

Mockingbird finally made it to hospital and the team are looking for revenge so something should happen with H.A.M.M.E.R soon.

Overall Rating

Same again for this arc so far. Decent art, well for the present story. I'm not sure what's going on on Namorta's face while riding the whale in 1959 but as I said last issue Chaykin's art isn't my cup of tea.

Still no clues as to what links these two stories/eras together.
