We can now reveal our dastardly hand in this comic. Mark and artist Terry Dodson asked Spiderfan to come up with a list of characters that might populate the audience in this unique auction scene for the Venom symbiote!
But before we get to the cameos, first, did you notice the Dodson name on the cover? It's "Dodsons" plural to include Terry's wife, Rachel, who inks his pencils. Be on the lookout for more hidden signatures on future covers!
While five of the current Astonishing X-Men team were on the cover, only Marvel Girl, Rachel Summers, had a major role. But before you think the others didn't show up, check out this page for the other four X-Men and 75% of the Fantastic Four plus their little guy.
Also note that Reed Richards appears to have a wandering eye, as he spies a certain brunette from MK:SM guest artist Frank Cho. Meanwhile, his wife Sue has, "Will work 4 food" on her t-shirt, reflecting the current plotline of the FF these days. Also look for a cameo by the Joker, and one of the guys from the band Modest Mouse! (I thought MM stood for Mark Millar!)
Then there is the auction scene. Terry jammed as many of our suggested villains into these pages - plus a bunch of extras that surprised us! Some of these were "dog-dares" - and some "double-dog-dares"! (What?! Has the actor playing Lobster-Man gone rogue!)
Yes, that's Stilt-Man. Didn't he give up his life of crime? Never say never in this business. Humilated through the years over and over as a B-List villain, he heard about an auction for something that would put him into the major leagues! Unfortunately, his old friend the Owl was at there, so Stilty may have been a bit shy about bidding.
Isn't Nathaniel Garrett, the evil Black Knight, dead? Maybe someone has followed in his footsteps. Maybe it's really him? We all saw Monty Python and the Holy Grail - the guy is pretty tough to pronouce "dead".
I was particularly happy to see the first non-CGI appearance of Yith, the snake-woman mercenary from Spider-Man: Quality of Life. If you're wondering who "Elf with Gun" is, check out Spider-Man Team-Up #5. If you're curious as to the whole history of the random Elves with Guns that have appears over the years, check out the Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe!
