Ultimate Spider-Man #92

Background

Having recently broken up with his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson, Peter started dating Kitty Pryde, member of the super-powered mutant team, the X-Men. After a crime-fighting date, Peter prepares himself for a quiet night at home - when the X-Men's jet arrives, hovering over his doorstep... with no one inside.

Peter dons his Spider-Man costume and investigates, but the craft flies (on autopilot) to the X-Mansion. Kitty is waiting for him - with an electric stun- gun that knocks him out! "Kitty"seems to change shape, revealing himself as a red-and-black-suited man who leads a team of cyborgs... and they all seem to have nefarious plans for our young hero...

Story Details

Spider-Man wakes up, only to be stun-gunned after seeing the X-Men are captured too. There's talk about taking off his mask. Deadpool says to respect the mask. Then he throws Spidey out of the plane on an island. The X-Men are thrown out too. Using his webbing he is able to break his fall. Still wearing cuffs, Spider-Man decides to look for the X-Men.

Suddenly, a cyborg attacks. Spidey runs, and meets up with Colossus. Colossus breaks the cuffs. Close by, Cyclops is fighting cyborgs. Spider-Man and Colossus set him free. More cyborgs are coming, Storm takes him out. Helicopters are coming, one crashes. It seems Kitty and Nightcrawler have arrived. And a little while later when Angel, Rogue and Jean arrive, the group is complete.

Of course, they have little time to exchange information, for Deadpool has arrived, with a bunch of cyborgs. He's yelling " Smile. You're about to make television history. "

General Comments

Well, what can I say? It feel's like chapter 2 of an issue of Marvel Team-Up, meaning the first series, from 1972. To bad it's issue 2 of this series, in the old days, they were able to tell the story in 2-3 pages. Yeah, yeah, I know, I start to sound like an old geezer, and perhaps I am, but this way, I am NOT enjoying Ultimate Spider-Man anymore. Please, go on with the story.

Oh, the " television history" remark at the end. Well, if you've read Ultimate X-Men 54-57 you can take a hint. And in stead of making this a cliffhanger, to me, it only adds to the feeling I'm reading a stretched team-up.

Overall Rating

The artwork of Bagley is great, he draws some great cyborgs. And some lean and mean X-Men. Enough to reward some bonus points, other than that, I do not rate this issue high.
