Spider-Man & Friends: Washable Coloring Book (Remarkables)

Background

Here's another oddball Spider-Man & Friends book. This one is a cloth coloring book, designed to be drawn on, then washed clean.

Story Details

There are six inner drawings. The inner pages are clean white cloth, with black line art. They feature:

  1. Spider-Man saying "I'm your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man"
  2. Hulk saying "Hulk Smash"
  3. Wolverine saying "Hey Bub, I'm Wolverine"
  4. Thing saying "It's Clobbering Time"
  5. Iron Man saying "3, 2, 1. Blast-Off!"
  6. Spider-Man saying "See you later, Alligator"

Ah yes, that traditional line from "Swinging 60's Spidey". I remember it so well.

General Comments

Personally, I think I'd rather just had my kid a 400 page coloring book and be done with it. At six pages per wash, that would be 67 spins through the laundry just to break even. Sure, all parents love doing laundry, but... is this really a time-saving, planet-saving alternative? Perhaps not.

Other comments: The artwork is pretty blah. And with only three washable felt-pens (Red, Yellow, Blue) included, I'm not sure how your average three year old is supposed to draw Hulk or Thing. Maybe the felt-pens can be mixed together somehow? I haven't tried it, but I'm not counting on it.

The packaging does say "works with most washable markers". But to be honest, I have no idea which markers might be washable, and which are not.

Finally, like everything these days, the book is made in China. The stitching on the spine is only single-stitched. I'm not sure exactly how many washes it would take before it started coming loose. Only time could tell.

Overall Rating

This is a pretty neat concept, but I have more than a couple of doubts about the execution.

I'm going to temper my enthusiasm, and play it safe with three cautious webs.
