Spider-Man Bubble Mini-Comic (1995)

Background

This is a most peculiar promo "comic". It's actually a plastic box, with one plastic page. It reprints the cover, and two of the inner pages from Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #44. Still, by the strict interpretation of the rules, it is (a) Spider-Man, (b) Promo, (c) a Reprint and (d) a Comic. So here it belongs, and here it is.

Story Details

As mentioned in physical terms this "comic" is a purple plastic box, about 3.25" wide, 4.5" high, and about 0.8% deep. Attached to the lid of the box is a sticker which shows the cover from Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #44.

Open the box, and on the reverse side of the lid is another sticker with a reproduced page from that comic, featuring the Hobgoblin (Macendale) and "The Dealer". Inside the box there is a hinged plastic flap, attached to which is a sticker which reproduces the next page from the story. There is no sticker on the reverse of the flap.

Lift up that flap and the remainder of the box contains two "sheets" of pink bubble gum. I declined to try the bubble gum. After fifteen years, it probably is still in edible condition. But hey, I'm a collector, not a bubble-blower.

General Comments

As far as I have seen in my Spidey collecting career, this is a unique item. Yes, there are many other bubble-gum and chewing gum products featuring Spider-Man, for example:

But this is the first one I have seen where the comic is actually part of the plastic container. Truly, it's a most unusual collectible.

Overall Rating

Based on pure novelty value, this is a masterpiece. However, as a reprint comic it's a bit of a failure, since it reproduces only two pages from the original comic book.

I'm gonna sit on the fence and give it three webs.
