Espiderman #5

Background

Enrique V. Vegas is an alt-comics star in Spain. Starting in the early 2000's, he released various runs of parody comics, featuring a drawing style he calls "Cabezona" (Big-Head). The early books predominantly spoofed Marvel characters, but he has recently stretched further afield into DC and other pop-culture icons.

This is the final issue of his five-issue Spider-Man parody run "Espiderman" (technically "Es-Piderman" on the very first issue).

That first issue was issued in 2002, but it took Enrique until 2011 for the ultimate episode to be published, nearly a decade later.

But before we leap into the details of the final issue, I'd like to take a moment to review the narrative of the previous four issues, and to summarize the common themes and the character development.

I'd like to. But I can't. Because bluntly speaking, there's not really any consistent narrative or recurrent themes. There's not really any character development, or overarching ideas. There's just a chain of jokes and set-piece scenes that parody Spider-Man, Peter Parker, and the other secondary characters. A bit of fun, some poking of stereotypes, a few non sequiturs, and a shit-ton of pop-culture references.

So instead, let's just do that leaping thing. Into the details. Right now.

Footnote

It is available in the original Spanish, and also as a 2011 Italian translation – Speederman.

All issues were color on the glossy front cover, but black and white artwork on the inside.
