The newest of Marvel's Ultimate titles is THE Ultimates. Basically it's the Ultimate Universe version of the Avengers, but for some reason or another they decided to change the name. The title has had a lot of hype and has the hot creative team of Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch. So, is it worth it? Does it live up to the hype? Is it the ultmiate Ultimate title?
Well lets just say, that so far (only two issues are on the shelves), it has lived up to the hype and is one of the best books I've read in a while. It is downright awesome. The art is spectacular. The story and plot are modern, intelligent and intriguing. The characters are interesting, three dimensional AND some of the coolest characters ever created by Marvel. And it even looks like it is shaping up to be ground-breaking, giving readers a different and new take on superheroics.
Basically, it's NOT the Avengers, sure they are the same characters, but they seem new and fresh. They are cool in a totally different way. The first two issues have just been set-up, but it's already been a great ride. In the first issue we were introduced to Captain America in a dramatic and touching way. In issue two, we see the gathering of the team as a government sponsored agency. We watch as Nick Fury recruits the members and are introduced to the chracters in a way that gives true insight to who they are. And guess what? Just about every page is riveting. From talking heads to splash pages, the art is beautiful. The scripting seems natural, drawing you into story and the character's heads. This is truly shaping up to be the Ultimate Marvel book.
So, what are you waiting for? Go out and buy it!
