Staff : New Staff

So, you want to join the staff, huh? You think you'd do a great job as the new reviewer for Amazing Spider-Man? Well, first thing you ought to know is that if you do join the team, you're not likely to find your first assignment being the flagship Spidey title. Before that happens, you'll need to prove to us that you can review well, that you're reliable, friendly, and that you can use the online reviewing forms.

The way to do that is by writing "Looking Back" reviews of older titles to help fill the gaps in the database. So before you write to us, have a think about where you'd like to start. The simplest thing is to find an old title that you particularly enjoyed, and just start reviewing from the beginning. Alternatively, you could write some character profiles. You decide, and let us know.

But before you even get that far, let's check that you really do have what it takes to be a SpiderFan reviewer. There's a few basic requirements you need to satisfy:

  1. You have to be a clear and accurate communicator. That means a good grasp of the English (and/or American) language. This usually means that you've finished college.

  2. You have to have a solid background in Spidey comics, that means at least five solid years of collecting, and owning probably around 1,000 Spidey comics out of the 3,000 or so that have been printed. Reprints are OK, but you'll need to own most of the core titles, not just Amazing Spider-Man.

  3. You have to be able to meet deadlines. This is very important, and this is where most potential freelancers fall down.

  4. You have to be pro-active. We don't need staff members that need reminding twenty times before they send in their reviews.

  5. You have access to a scanner. If really need be, you can get somebody else to do cover scans for your reviews, but it's much more convenient if you have your own scanner.

  6. You have to be friendly, and happy to swap emails with a bunch of die-hard Spidey fans.

Being on the staff involves a serious commitment of at least two hour per month. It doesn't sound like a lot, but given how busy most people's lives are these days, it can be quite hard to do on a consistent basis.
