Captain Marvel is dead, he died of cancer; surrounded by his friends and family Marvel Graphic Novel (No. 1) Death Of Captain Marvel. Only things have changed. While setting up the other-dimensional super-power prison in the Negative Zone during the Civil War, Reed Richards discovered Captain Marvel floating aimlessly in a stasis sphere. Mar-Vel was rescued and recruited by Iron Man's team, and brought back into this timeline, several years after his death.
