Eager to serve his country during World War II but physically deficient, Steve Rogers agreed to take part in a secret project for the military code- named "Operation: Rebirth". Rogers is subsequently transformed into a perfect physical specimen. Due to sabotage by Nazi agents, Rogers is the only one to benefit from this project.

Adopting the codename of "Captain America" and dressing in a costume resembling the American flag, Rogers becomes a rallying symbol for Americans during this time. Close to the war's end, Rogers is caught in an explosion over the Northern Atlantic Ocean and disappears. He is found decades later by the newly-formed Avengers in suspended animation due to the freezing waters and ultimately revived.
