Comics : Sensational Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #19
Part 1 / Part 2
I have, of late, spoken harsh words about the Sensational Spider-Man title. However, being the magnaminious man that I am, I read each issue with a new eye and a desire to sit in fair judgment. So, with that said - let us advance with alacrity to the anticipated animated action.
Sensational Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #19
Sep 1997 : SM Title
Arc: Part 1 of "The Staff of Horus"
|Articles: Jameson, J. Jonah, Mary Jane Watson-Parker|
Out in the canyon lands of Utah, a hip, smart-mouthed teen-aged girl named Akasha is mountain-biking with her pals, when she drops into the crater made by some falling space debris. Her dreams are filled with remembered lives of the Living Pharoh (Many-lived Egyptian powerhouse with a mission to transform the world back to ancient Egypt and rule it with an iron fist).
Meanwhile, Spidey fools around with some street creeps before heading home to MJ. The next day, Peter is sent to photograph the Egyptian Exhibit at the museum. Now, between you and me, the last three times anyone in Marvel Comics went to an Egyptian exhibit - the Living Pharoh showed up. So, don't expect to be surprised...
Sure enough, Akasha has gone to New York to visit her estranged father, and has pursuaded him to take her to the museum. There, she grabs the Staff of Horus (the staff of power used by the Pharoh) and transforms to a scantily-clad female version of the Living Pharoh. Battle ensues, mostly in favour of the one in the wierd head-dress, rather than the one in Spandex.
This has all the key elements. Action, internal human struggle for good over evil, new villain revamped, new hero created, hip teen girl in tight outfit, Spidey in full flight against a well-matched opponent.
So, if all the parts are there for a succesful (albeit not particularly original) story, then I guess it comes down to the execution - and that isn't too bad this time!
Overall, this is good, reliable work. Good enough to hold readers and keep them coming back for more... as we will come back for more with part two next month! In the meanwhile, four webs will hold ya.
