Feb 1997 : SM Title : Sensational Spider-Man (Vol. 1)
Reprinted In: Spider-Man: The Savage Land Saga (TPB)
Characters: Chtylok, the Che-k'n Kau, J. Jonah Jameson, Ka-Zar, Stegron the Dinosaur Man

Peter Parker travels to the Savage land to cover a disaster in the making. The ice which surrounds the Antarctic paradise is threatening to melt, in spite of the best efforts of Roxxon Corporation to save it (assisted by the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D).

Of course the first thing Peter does is change into Spider-Man, and head off into the wilderness to explore. He meets Ka-Zar and the delectable Shanna the She-Devil, and assists in their attempts to evacuate the locals.

Meanwhile, we learn that the Roxxon scientists are in fact attempting to speed rather than slow the inundation, in an attempt to nullify the Savage Land's international protection order and plunder some newly discovered oil reserves. Savage Land = Dinosaurs = Oil, right?

Oh, yeah, Hulk is fighting some newly woken mythical bird on the other side of the world. More on that later.

In General...

Immediately you note that the characterisations just plain smell. The banter between Peter and Ka-Zar is obviously written by someone who doesn't realise the things they've done together. Check out some issues of the original Ka-Zar series, and some early Amazing Spideys.

Overall Rating...

This would formulaic, except that they didn't even get the formula right! One lousy web.
