Comics : Marvel Team-Up #126 (Story 2)This story is part of a Lookback Series: Totalistic Team-Ups
Background...The backup tail in this Marvel Team-Up double feature has Spider-Man and the Hulk together again, and is thus highly worthy of our attention.
In Detail...
Having taken care of Serpentino with a Crazy Snake puzzle game in the advertisement on the previous page, Hulk now turns his attention to those puny humans that New Yorkers call "cops." Smashing ensues, and in comes Spider-Man to help the poor cops (who try to kill him anyway). Besides, Peter is down to his last five bucks, and needs cash. Five dollars, huh? Seems like a lot of unnecessary information... Spidey leads the Hulk away from public, all the while dodging police bullets. Bug-man make fun of Hulk, which Hulk no like - Hulk smash. Hulk jump where funny blue bug-man swing. Hulk go inside warehouse for a nap, where he turn back into Bruce Banner. Thinking quickly, bug-man... er... Peter puts his civvies back on, and tries to reason with Banner. He tells Bruce to get back on the road and find some work, and says that he'll need money, so Peter pulls out his last five dollars and gives it to him. Bruce is hesitant, but Peter insists that one time, at band camp, a stranger gave him HIS last five dollars, when Pete was down and out. He says that this five dollars has been passed from stranger to stranger since money was invented, with each man being obligated to pass it on when he gets back on his feet. Interesting how that five dollars from page two of the story came back into play here -- that information seemed superfluous at the time. Months later, Banner is working on the docks in Chicago - when he sees an old man get mugged and robbed by a group of thugs. Banner screams for police, but they don't listen. Bruce heads into the alley to fight the oblivious gang, who smack Banner around heartlessly. This make Hulk mad again. Hulk smash. Hulk finds the old man who was just robbed on the street, exhausted, injured, and now poor. Hulk threatens him, but the man isn't frightened, he is tired of being picked on and wants it to end. Hulk looks sympathetic for a moment, then reaches inside his purple pants for a wad of bills, with the line "Take this. Hulk give it to you." Hulk walks away into the sunset, presumably looking for more things to smash.
In General...Ah, tales of the human heart. It's very hard to do these kinds of stories anymore without coming off as extremely derivative or boring, but back in the 1970s and 80s, they were a dime a dozen - and this is one of my favourites. Even Hulk gets it!Overall Rating...
Touching, not sappy at all. |
