Cards : 1994 Bagley
All of the art in this series is pencilled by Mark Bagley, who was
an immensely popular Spider-Man artist at the time. Of course, in
modern times, nothing has changed, he's still incredibly popular,
thanks to his work on Ultimate Spider-Man!
These card are beautifully colored, and far more interesting than
the sets that preceded them. The backs of the cards feature additional
info, in different formats for each sub-set. Many of the cards combine
in tiny sub-sets of nine to form a larger mosaic on the front, which
looks fabulous in a 3x3 card folder.
For the first time, we see a full range of chase sets, including
12 fully transparent plastic cards, four terrific holograms, and
the six gold cards. Even the regular card set is larger than ever
before, with 150 cards instead of 90. This is a huge set, and it's
several steps on from the various Spider-Man card sets which came
before.

Basic Cards
|
The basic cards are full glossy stock. The front has the art, naturally,
full color with bleeding to the edges. Overlaid on the art is the logo
for the set (left or right top corner). Down the bottom is the card title
and the sub-set name.
Considerable effort has gone into the backs of the cards, with more
graphics, laid out with additional text providing context and facts for
the card, e.g. clarifications of powers, descriptions of key events,
villain profiles, etc.

Here is the complete set of basic cards, 1-150. The start of each
sub-set is indicated.
Chase Cards
|
The first chase set is the 12-card "Suspended Animation" subset. This
features transparant plastic cards.
- Spider-Man
- Mary Jane
- Chameleon
- Venom
- Carnage
- Hob-Goblin
- Spider-Man
- Vulture
- Doctor Octopus
- Spider-Man
- Black Cat
- Lizard

Here are the four holograms. These look even better in real life.
- Carnage
- Spider-Man
- Venom
- Spider-Man
|
- Venom
- Mary Jane
- Spider-Man
- Chameleon
- Hobgoblin
- Carnage
|
The first Gold Web set wasn't included in the standard hobby packs. It was
available only in "Jumbo" packs. I don't have an image of the Jumbo pack,
but we'll try and track one down.
|
- Spider-Man
- Lizard
- Black Cat
- Vulture
- Doctor Octopus
- Spider-Man
|
To make life confusing, there was another set of six Gold Webs distributed
exclusively by Wal-Mart. These are also numbered 1-6, leading to some
confusion with Spider-Man being #3 in the first set and #1 and #6 in the
second set. We'll try and find more info about how the Wal-Mart promo was
packaged.

Extra Stuff
You want extra stuff? Well, you're in luck! I have a couple of these
bits and pieces, but not enough to justify scanning them in.
Firstly there's a 6" x 10" MasterPrint Set (Case Insert), which
apparantly consisted of:
- Allies
- Enemies I
- Enemies II
- Enemies III
- Enemies IV
- Enemies V
- Powers
- Strangest Transformations
- Venom
- (mini-poster)
Then there's two more masterprints from publications. I have the Wizard
MasterPrint, but not the other yet.
|
- Spider-Man vs. Wolverine (Masterprint, 6" x 10"; Collector's Sportlook)
- Spider-Man vs. Venom (Masterprint, 6" x 10"; Wizard)
|
Then there were some inserts into comic books. I have a few of these, but
I haven't gone searching for them to scan them yet:
- Super-Strength / Immune To Spider Sense / Vulnerable to Fire
(3-card panel, 7-1/2" x 3-1/2" perforated; comic insert)
- Kraven / Spider-Man / Chameleon,
(3-card panel, 7-1/2" x 3-1/2" perforated; comic insert)
- Spider-Strength / Spider-Leap / SpiderSense,
(3-card panel, 7-1/2" x 3-1/2" perforated; comic insert)
- Venom / Spider-Man / Lizard / Hobgoblin
(4-card panel, 5" x 7-3/4"; collector magazines)
- Doc Octopus / Vulture / Venom / Spider-Man
(4-card panel, part of 8-card panel also featuring '94 X-Men
Ultra, full panel 2-5/8" x 7" perforated)
Then there were some nine-card promo pages, some perforated, some not. I'm not
exactly sure which one is shown in the scan, I think it's the non-perforated
and unbranded variant.
|
- Doc Octopus / Vulture / Carnage / Venom / Spider-Man / Electro / Lizard /
Hobgoblin / Mysterio (9-card panel, 7-1/8" x 10-3/4", perforated edge)
- (9-card panel, same as above, no perforation on edge)
- (9-card panel, same as above, marked "Triton" on back; Triton insert)
- (9-card panel, same as above, marked "Comic Book Collector")
- (9-card panel, same as above, marked "HWDC")
|
Then a couple of dealer promo items:
- Face Front In '94 (Oversized 6-1/2" x 9-1/8", gold foil lettering; dealer promo)
- Cello 3-packs of cards from regular set (dealer handout)
Note that Bagley pencilled a Promo Set
in 1992, under the Impel label. I believe that some collectors refer to that
set as a promo for this 1994 set, but personally I think that's a bit of a
stretch - they're very different.
I'm not going to go collecting all these promo sheets. I have my limits. But
if you own some of these and would like to scan them in for the page, then just
drop me (The Editor) an email using the link on the side of the page.
Packaging
|
