The Red Star is a title that has been around for a couple of years now and
is a labour of love for all those involved. It tells an epic tale of a
failing empire that purposefully reflects the demise of the USSR. The Red
Star is very different from just about every comic book out there. In the
scope of story and subject matter, to its innovative art and production
techniques the title stands out among the crowd.
More importantly though, the Red Star is damn good! The characters are
interesting, the story enthralling and best of all, the art is stunning and
gorgeous. I was blown away by the first couple of issues and had to buy
them again when they were reprinted in an oversived trade. The art is just
that beautiful! The art is a combination of raw pencils and computer
graphics that sets a new standard and proves that computer graphics can be
used in comics.
The story so far has followed Maya and Marcus Antares, a couple in love who
lose each other amid war. Maya thinks Marcus dead and searches for him, as
Marcus goes on to fight a darker, more sinister war against a powerful
force. The world of the Red Star treats magic as a scientific phenomenon,
which is a very interesting portrayal. There is also stunning futuristic
technology such as the sky furnaces, all set against a communist and
militaristic society. It makes for an interesting mix that captures the
imagination and emotions.
Because the title has changed publishers, it has recently restarted at a
new number 1. So it's a good time to pick it up and if you're interested
you can grab all the back issues in those beautiful oversized trades I
mentioned. If you haven't figured it out yet, I really love this book, so
if you get a chance check it out!
