100 Bullets by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso has got to be about the
best thing being published in comics at the moment! Published monthly by
Vertigo (DC's Mature line), 100 Bullets is a seedy, violent, noirish and at
times confusing tale of revenge and retribution. The basic premise is that
a mysterious stranger will show up in your life, offering you a briefcase.
He'll know everything about you, especially an incident in your past where
someone grieviously wronged you. In the briefcase will be a handgun and 100
rounds of ammunition, all completely untraceable. The briefcase contains
all that you'll need to exact your revenge - basically a "get even" kit.
This loose format allows for many unusual and weird characters to take the
spotlight - bartenders, winos, rich elite, prostitutes, ice cream vendors,
gang-bangers etc. Azzarello writes all of these varied characters so
convincingly that you'll swear you've known them for years. But the best
part of the series is the sub-plot that's gradually being revealed. There
is a whole organisation behind the man with the briefcase, and they are
both far-reaching and ruthless. What is the organisation up to? Who is part
of it and why? Who do the various players really work for, and what is
their motivation?
If you're looking for something very different to all the spandex clad
super hero stuff, you could do a lot worse than check out 100 Bullets. Now
is a great time to jump onboard too, with issue #26 currently in stores
being a sort of summary of the various characters and storylines thus far.
You couldn't ask for a better catch up than this!
